Fostering public AI literacy has been a growing area of interest at CHI for several years, and a substantial community is forming around issues such as teaching children how to build and program AI systems, designing learning experiences to broaden public understanding of AI, developing explainable AI systems, understanding how novices make sense of AI, and exploring the relationship between public policy, ethics, and AI literacy. Previous workshops related to AI literacy have been held at other conferences (e.g., SIGCSE, AAAI) that have been mostly focused on bringing together researchers and educators interested in AI education in K-12 classroom environments, an important subfield of this area. Our workshop seeks to cast a wider net that encompasses both HCI research related to introducing AI in K-12 education and also HCI research that is concerned with issues of AI literacy more broadly, including adult education, interactions with AI in the workplace, understanding how users make sense of and learn about AI systems, research on developing explainable AI (XAI) for non-expert users, and public policy issues related to AI literacy. © 2023 Owner/Author.

One of the main barriers preventing widespread use of formal methods is the elicitation of formal specifications. Formal specifications facilitate the testing and verification process for safety critical robotic systems. However, handling the intricacies of formal languages is difficult and requires a high level of expertise in formal logics that many system developers do not have. In this work, we present a graphical tool designed for the development and visualization of formal specifications by people that do not have training in formal logic. The tool enables users to develop specifications using a graphical formalism which is then automatically translated to Metric Temporal Logic (MTL). In order to evaluate the effectiveness of our tool, we have also designed and conducted a usability study with cohorts from the academic student community and industry. Our results indicate that both groups were able to define formal requirements with high levels of accuracy. Finally, we present applications of our tool for defining specifications for operation of robotic surgery and autonomous quadcopter safe operation.

For robots to be able to naturally co-habitate human spaces, as well as to interact with single humans or groups of humans, they should be able to navigate in ways that are human-friendly, and appropriate to human spatial interaction social norms, such as keeping personal spaces. For that purpose, we are developing a special theory which extends path planning, which we call social path plan, which allows humans or groups as obstacles or goals. In order to provide tuning for our simulation results, we are acquiring a natural human interaction dataset, through measurements from multiple laser ranging sensors positioned at a cross-roads indoor space. We thus describe our system consisting of spatial and temporal alignment algorithms for multiple laser sensors, as well as foreground detection, sensor data fusion, segmentation, tracking, two-legged position and pose estimation, and event detection. The method presented can be easily extended to larger spaces and applied for many other application domains beyond our main goal of learning optimal spatial interaction behaviours for human-robot interaction.

There exist a multitude of multimedia sources nowadays where audiovisual material is accompanied by labels. In many cases, the semantic content of these labels is not referring to the totality of the material they accompany; but only to a certain subset of it. Consider, for example, labels that refer to objects that are part of an image; or, alternatively, labels that refer to an event that is part of a video. Knowledge of the subset of the material to which the labels refer to can be very useful; for example, it can inform us regarding the detectability of the entity under the presence of selective occlusions or noise; or, it can be used to help segment out the referent from the material itself - and, among many other uses, to optimize the recognition of the entities that the words refer to. Towards these goals, in this paper we will present a method which allows such semantic spatiotemporal localization: given multiple instances of the material, and accompanying labels, we will produce subsets of the material which are most informative regarding the label; and which can be thought of as the spatiotemporally localized grounding of the concept represented by the words. The method is illustrated for the specific case of spatially localizing labels describing human faces or parts and artifacts of them; such as “beard”, “glasses”, “male”, “old”. No prior information about the spatial locus of the referents of these words is given; the algorithm blindly identifies the regions that are most informative for each label, and can be readily applied to robot vision.

IbnSina is the world's first Arabic-language conversational android robot, and is also part of an interactive theatre with multiple possibilities for human teleparticipation. In this paper, we describe extensions carried out to IbnSina's software architecture in order to enrich its capabilities in multiple ways, so that it can become an exciting educational / persuasive robot in the future. The main axis for extension were: access to online (Wikipedia) and stored (Koran database) content for dialogue generation, basic multilingual capability exploration (English and Arabic, also utilizing Google Translate), basic read-aloud-text capability (through OCR), and systematization of motor control (with higher-level API for real-time lip syncing, eye blinking, natural looking random face movements, and interpolation between facial expressions including an affective state subsystem). With such capabilities, IbnSina becomes closer to an attractive robot that can find real-world application in malls, schools, as a receptionist etc. © 2011 IEEE.

FaceBots: Steps Towards Enhanced Long-Term Human-Robot Interaction by Utilizing and Publishing Online Social Information

The overarching goal of the FaceBots project is to support the achievement of sustainable long-Term human-robot relationships through the creation of robots with face recognition and natural language capabilities, which exploit and publish online information, and especially social information available on Facebook, and which achieve two significant novelties. The underlying experimental hypothesis is that such relationships can be significantly enhanced if the human and the robot are gradually creating a pool of episodic memories that they can co-refer to ("shared memories"), and if they are both embedded in a social web of other humans and robots they mutually know ("shared friends"). We present a description of system architecture, as well as important concrete results regarding face recognition and transferability of training, with training and testing sets coming from either one or a combination of two sources: An onboard camera which can provide sequences of images, as well as facebook-derived photos. Furthermore, early interaction-related results are presented, and evaluation methodologies as well as interesting extensions are discussed. © Nikolaos Mavridis et al. 2010.

Although rudimentary memory systems for autonomous agents have existed for quite a while, human-like memory systems which contain extensive episodic, social and affective components, and which can be utilized in order to maintain relationships with humans, have only recently started to appear. interactive robots are a special case of an autonomous agent, which is physically situated, interacts with humans, and which has sensing and motor abilities. Furthermore, social robots might have regular encounters and interactions with other human or non-human entities, and might maintain relationships with them. In this paper, a set of desiderate for memory systems of companions will be presented, together with case studies of the memory subsystems of two existing robotic systems: first, Ripley the Robot, an interactive manipulator robot arm with vision, dialogue, and a sensorymotor-grounded situation model;and second, Sarah the FaceBot, a social mobile robot with face recognition, dialogue, as well as a social and interaction database which is bi-directionally connected to the FaceBook website. The case studies provide the basis for an interesting discussion involving physical situations, self-models, expectations, and most importantly episodic and social memories, human- or machine- authored, internal or external, private or shared.

Social networks, which until recently were populated exclusively by human actors, are starting to become increasingly populated by artificial agents, which play various roles within them. Thus, they can be viewed as an interesting digital ecosystem, with two qualitatively different kinds of agents: biological as well as artificial. An example of such an artificial agent will be presented, which is in this case physically embodied: Sarah the FaceBot, a conversational mobile robot equipped with a social database and interaction memories. Sarah not only participates within the actual human social network by forming relationships with its physical interaction partners, but is also a member of the FaceBook social networking website, which she automatically queries for information which she uses in her dialogues, and on which she also actively deposits social information. Starting from this example, an extensive discussion of open questions, purposes, and potentialities regarding the introduction of artificial agents within human social networks will take place, exposing multiple avenues towards beneficial application of such agents within the newly arising digital ecosystem of hybrid human-machine social networks. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper explores the intersection of three areas: interactive robots, face recognition, and online social networks, by presenting and discussing an implemented realworld system that combines all three, a "FaceBots" robot. Our robot is a mobile robot with face recognition, natural language dialogue, as well as mapping capabilities. The robot is also equipped with a social database containing information about the people it interacts with and is also connected in real-time to the "Facebook" online social networking website, which contains information as well as partially tagged pictures. Our system demonstrates the benefits of this triangle of interconnection: it is not only the case that Facebook information can lead to more interesting interactions, but also that: Facebook photos enable better face recognition, interactive robots enable robot-mediated publishing of photos and information on Facebook. Most importantly, as we shall see in detail, social information enables significantly better and faster face recognition, as an interesting bidirectional relationship exists between the "friends" relation in social networks and the "faces appear in the same picture" relation in face recognition. We will present algorithms for exploiting this relationship, as well as quantitative results. The two main novelties of our system are: this is the first interactive conversational mobile robot that utilizes and publishes social information in Facebook, and is also the first system utilizing the social context of conjectured identities in a photo for better face recognition. © 2009 IEEE.
