The inherent fragility of ceramic materials is an obstacle to producing ceramics that are resistant and hard. Furthermore, the use of monolithic ceramic plate armour for ballistic applications is challenging because the protections need to resist multiple impacts. One of the solutions are mosaic ceramic armour systems, which consist of ceramic tiles arranged side by side. However, there is a wide variety of ceramic tile formats, as well as different dimensions. Unlike monolithic ceramics, mosaic systems present different behaviour when subjected to a ballistic event. As a result, their energy dissipation mechanisms and the properties necessary for this purpose are distinct. The main properties of ceramic tiles are hardness, modulus of elasticity, and fracture toughness, of which the latter, according to the analysis of figures of merit, must be as low as possible, as opposed to hardness and modulus of elasticity, which are desired to be as high as possible. We can efficiently take advantage of brittle fracture mechanisms to absorb the kinetic energy of the projectile during the tile fracture. Furthermore, the gap-filling material is extremely important, as it allows the confinement of the ceramic tiles and reduces the spread of damage. Numerical analysis is a great ally for the study of ballistic ceramics, and countless variables can be considered, enabling results very close to experimental ones at a low cost. Thus, it is possible to understand the key factors for producing more efficient ballistic ceramics as well as obtaining research data that can contribute to the evolution of the ballistic protection sector. In this context, this work presents a review of ceramic mosaics for ballistic amours.

Nonclassical Hydrogen Bond-Based Efficient Solid-State Organic Emitters Enabled by a Synergistic Anion and Mechanical Bond Effect

Traditional fluorophores often face aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), limiting their efficacy in high-concentration applications. We demonstrate that a combined effect of anion and mechanical bond can significantly increase fluorescence intensity, up to 14-fold, and a quantum yield of 97.0%. A large number of crystal analyses reveal that this enhancement is primarily driven by nonclassical hydrogen bonds, which stabilize the structure and restrict molecular motion. The versatility of this synergistic effect opens up new avenues for applications, including circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) facilitated by chiral anions and the development of a fluorescence switchable rotaxane shuttle-based stimuli-responsive material.

Effect of Ammonium Formate Addition on Corrosion Behavior of Trivalent Chromium Coatings Electrodeposited in Deep Eutectic Solvents

The Cr thin films were electrodeposited from trivalent chromium deep eutectic solvents. The conditions of deep eutectic solvents divided into without water (specimen C1), added 15 wt% water (specimen C2), added 15 wt% water with ammonium formate (specimen C3). The HR-TEM shows the structure of “C1” is amorphous structure, and both “C2” and “C3” belong to nano-crystalline structure. The best corrosion resistance of Cr thin film is “C3” which icorr value is approximately at 3.69×10^-7 A/cm², the worst corrosion resistance of Cr thin film is “C1” which icorr value is approximately at 3.05×10^-5 A/cm², it can be attributed to “C3” has a dense structure and “C1” has a loose structure. The EIS analysis also presents “C3” has the best corrosion resistance. The reason for the large difference in corrosion resistance can be attributed to the loose structure of the "C1" thin film and the gaps of film is perpendicular to substrate, the dense structure of the "C3" thin film can effectively protect the substrate. Moreover, the addition of ammonium formate into trivalent chromium deep eutectic solvents will promote the reduction reaction of Cr ions and form a dense film © 2022. The Authors. The main aim of this study was to utilize naturally selected Pseudomonas putida strains isolated from activated sludge in a wastewater treatment plant, for the purpose of bioremediation of biogas effluent to remove organic content and color. Biogas effluent from anaerobically digestion of distillery wastewater treated with P. putida at the best evaluated condition (sample concentration of 50% v/v, agitation and aeration rates of 250 rpm and 1.0 vvm for 6 days) showed significant decolorization and organic removal efficacies of 34.29 ± 0.87% and 38.94 ± 0.63%, respectively. Bioremediation efficiency was dependent on bacterial growth which organic content in sample and dissolved oxygen during cultivation were key factors. The natural selected bacterium could tolerate higher organic content and work synergistically with other indigenous microorganisms found in the biogas effluent. Consequently, bioremediation of biogas effluent by natural selected P. putida is feasible to apply in biogas power plant where sterilization is not necessary in the process. © 2023, The Authors. Calcium aluminate cement (CAC) is broadly used in refractory compositions due to its advantages, although CaO can affect the castable’s hot properties when silica is present. The need for higher-temperature applications and tougher conditions has led to innovations in high-performance materials, focusing on reducing CAC content and using binders without CaO or SiO 2 . Although progress has been made in their application, these binders still have limitations. Colloidal alumina is particularly promising for generating a silica-free system with higher refractoriness and lower liquid phase formation, depending on the refractory composition. Based on these aspects, this work evaluated the influence of using colloidal alumina as a binder in refractory castables (Al 2 O 3 -SiC-C) for blast furnace main troughs, comparing its properties to a commercially available silica sol castable. The influence of different dispersants, gelling agents and secondary binders on the properties of both sol-bonded castables was investigated. The results indicated that citric acid was the most effective dispersant in providing suitable rheological behavior based on its interaction with alumina particles (electrostatic mechanism), magnesia sinter and calcium aluminate cement. Furthermore, using optimized amounts of citric acid, MgO and CAC, a colloidal alumina-bonded refractory composition with higher green mechanical strength and suitable working time was obtained compared to the colloidal silica castable used as reference.

The pursuit of sustainable polyurethane product development necessitates a profound understanding of precursor materials, particularly polyol since polyurethane properties are heavily influenced by the type of polyol employed during polyurethane production. While traditional polyurethanes are solely derived from hydroxyl functionalized polyols, the emergence of amine-hydroxyl hybrid polyols has garnered significant attention due to their potential for enhancing polyurethane product properties. These hybrid polyols are characterized by the presence of both amine and hydroxyl functional groups. However, characterizing these polyols remains a daunting challenge due to the lack of established experimental testing standards for properties, such as fractional hydroxyl and amine moieties, and thermo-kinetic parameters for amine reactions with isocyanates. To bridge these gaps, this study employed a computational simulation approach to determine the fractions of moieties in both traditional and hybrid polyols. Additionally, this study determined the thermo-kinetic parameters for exothermic isocyanate reactions with amine moieties in hybrid polyols. The computational method integrated energy balance and reaction kinetics analysis for various polyols to elucidate the influence of functional moieties on the thermo-kinetic behavior of polyurethane formations. Validation of the simulated results was conducted by comparing their experimental and simulated gel and foam temperature profiles, highlighting the direct influence of fractional moieties on polyurethane formations. The comparisons revealed an average relative error of less than 5%, indicating the accuracy and credibility of the simulation. Thus, this study represents a pivotal opportunity for advancing knowledge and driving sustainable developments in biobased polyol characterization for polyurethane production streamlining and formulation optimization. © 2023, The Authors. Braiding fractional quantum Hall quasiholes on a superconducting quantum processor

Direct experimental detection of anyonic exchange statistics in fractional quantum Hall systems by braiding the excitations and measuring the wave-function phase is an enormous challenge. Here, we use a small, noisy quantum computer to emulate direct braiding within the framework of a simplified model applicable to a thin cylinder geometry and measure the topological phase. Our algorithm first prepares the ground state with two quasiholes. It then applies a unitary operation controlled by an ancilla, corresponding to a sequence of adiabatic evolutions that take one quasihole around the other. We finally extract the phase of the wave function from measuring the ancilla with a compound error mitigation strategy. Our results open a new avenue for studying braiding statistics in fractional Hall states. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Understanding the emergent electronic structure in twisted atomically thin layers has led to the exciting field of twistronics. However, practical applications of such systems are challenging since the specific angular correlations between the layers must be precisely controlled and the layers have to be single crystalline with uniform atomic ordering. Here, we suggest an alternative, simple and scalable approach where nanocrystalline two-dimensional (2D) film on three-dimensional (3D) substrates yield twisted-interface-dependent properties. Ultrawidebandgap hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) thin films are directly grown on high in-plane lattice mismatched wide-bandgap silicon carbide (4H-SiC) substrates to explore the twist-dependent structure-property correlations. Concurrently, nanocrystalline h-BN thin film shows strong nonlinear second-harmonic generation and ultra-low cross-plane thermal conductivity at room temperature, which are attributed to the twisted domain edges between van der Waals stacked nanocrystals with random in-plane orientations. First-principles calculations based on time-dependent density functional theory manifest strong even-order optical nonlinearity in twisted h-BN layers. Our work unveils that directly deposited 2D nanocrystalline thin film on 3D substrates could provide easily accessible twist-interfaces, therefore enabling a simple and scalable approach to utilize the 2D-twistronics integrated in 3D material devices for next-generation nanotechnology. © 2023, CC BY.
