Incorporation of wastewater from industrial sectors into the design of microalgal biorefineries has significant potential for advancing the practical application of this emerging industry. This study tested various food industrial wastewaters to assess their suitability for microalgal cultivation. Among these wastewaters, defective soy sauce (DSS) and soy sauce wastewater (SWW) were chosen but DSS exhibited the highest nutrient content with 13,500 ppm total nitrogen and 3051 ppm total phosphorus. After diluting DSS by a factor of 50, small-scale cultivation of microalgae was conducted to optimize culture conditions. SWW exhibited optimal growth at 25–30 °C and 300–500 μE m−2 s−1, while DSS showed optimal growth at 30–35 °C. Based on a 100-mL lab-scale and 3-L outdoor cultivation with an extended cultivation period, DSS outperformed SWW, exhibiting higher final biomass productivity. Additionally, nutrient-concentrated nature of DSS is advantageous for transportation at an industrial scale, leading us to select it as the most promising feedstock for microalgal cultivation. With further optimization, DSS has the potential to serve as an effective microalgal cultivation feedstock for large-scale biomass production. © 2023 The Authors

This research studied the quantity of free formaldehyde released from 2- [(hydroxymethyl)amino]ethanol (HAE) in DI water and natural rubber latex mixture using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. The quantity of formaldehyde retained in the solution was cross-checked by using titration technique. The investigated factors were the concentration of preservative (HAE), pH, and temperature. Taguchi's method was used to design the experiments. The number of experiments was reduced to 16 experiments from all possible experiments by orthogonal arrays (3 factors and 4 levels in each factor). Minitab program was used as a tool for statistical calculation and for finding the suitable condition for the preservative system. HPLC studies showed that higher temperature and higher concentration of the preservative influence the amount of formaldehyde released. It was found that conditions at which formaldehyde was released in the lowest amount were 1.6%w/v HAE, 4 to 40 °C, and the original pH. Nevertheless, the pH value of NR latex should be more than 10 (the suitable pH value was found to be 13). This preservative can be used to replace current preservative systems and can maintain the quality of latex for long-term storage. Use of the proposed preservative system was also shown to have reduced impact on the toxicity of the environment. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Energy resolved photon-counting detectors could achieve more than one spectral measurement. The goal of this study is to investigate, with experiment, the ability to decompose five materials using energy discriminating detectors and multiple discriminant analysis (MDA). A small field-of-view multi-energy CT system was built. Linear attenuation coefficient was considered as features of multiple energy CT. MDA was used to decompose five materials with six measurements of the energy dependent linear attenuation coefficients. The results of the experimental study showed that a CT system based on CdTe detectors with MDA can be used to decompose five materials.

Purpose: In radiotherapy, metallic implants often detach from their deposited sites and migrate to other locations. This undesirable migration could cause inadequate dose coverage for permanent brachytherapy and difficulties in image-guided radiation delivery for patients. To prevent migration of implanted seeds, we propose a potential strategy to use of a biocompatible and tissue-adhesive material called polydopamine. Methods: In this study, non-radioactive dummy seeds that have the same geometry and composition as commercial I-125 seeds were coated in polydopamine. Using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the surface of the polydopamine-coated and non-coated seeds was characterized. The detachment stress between the two types of seeds and the tissue was measured. The efficacy of polydopamine-coated seed was investigated through in-vitro migration tests by tracing the seed location after tissue implantation and shaking for given times. The cytotoxicity of the polydopamine coating was also evaluated. Results: The results of the coating characterization have shown that polydopamine was successfully coated on the surface of the seeds. In the adhesion test, the polydopamine-coated seeds had 2.1-fold greater detachment stress than non-coated seeds. From the in-vitro test, it was determined that the polydopamine-coated seed migrated shorter distances than the non-coated seed. This difference was increased with a greater length of time after implantation. Conclusion: We suggest that polydopamine coating is an effective technique to prevent migration of implanted seeds, especially for permanent prostate brachytherapy.

An integrative CT simulation technique is presented that creates realistic CT images of virtual fecal-tagged material that was added to given clinical DICOM CT images. The energy spectrum of the CT X-ray source, the energy-dependent attenuation, and the scattering properties of the soft tissue and tagging material were incorporated in the generation technique for the DICOM image-based virtual sinograms, followed by CT reconstruction reflecting the vendor-specific filtering kernels. Dark band artifacts were generated by appropriate combining of beam-hardening and -scattering effects into the generation procedure for the virtual sinograms. We used a set of simple numerical phantoms to assess the basic behavior of artifact production. A reference set of CTC images with and without tagging material and artifacts was used for evaluation of the realism of the simulated results. The level of realism was evaluated in terms of the artifact strength and patterns around the added tagging material, compared to real tagging images. The results showed that our CT simulation technique provides sufficient realism for virtual fecal-tagged images that reflect a chain of physical and numerical processes, including beam hardening, scattering, and vendor-specific kernel filtered backprojection. The technique presented has the potential to be used as a tool for investigating the effect of tagging materials on image quality and to gauge how well the electronic cleansing technique performs. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In order to perform preoperative surgical planning, accurate segmentation of anatomical structures in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images is required. However, this image segmentation is often impeded by metal artifacts, and it takes a lot of time due to morphological variability in patients. In this paper, we proposed a deep learning based automatic multi-calss segmentation method for anatomical structures in CBCT images containing metal artifacts. Four U-Net based deep learning models were used for anatomical structure segmentation. Each deep learning model was constructed by changing the encoder of U-Net architecture to the backbones (DenseNet121, VGGNet16, ResNet101, and EfficienNetB4). For training and testing our method, we used 20744 CBCT images containing metal artifacts from 30 patient datasets. Experimental results show that the segmentation performances of the mandible, midfacial bone, mandibular canal, and maxillary sinus were achieved F1 scores of , , , and using DenseNet121 with Tversky loss, respectively. Furthermore, our method was able to perform robust and accurate segmentation of anatomical structures in CBCT images containing metal artifacts. © 2022 Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers. We investigate the thermal-transport properties of the kagome antiferromagnet Cd-kapellasite (Cd-K). We find that a field-suppression effect on the longitudinal thermal conductivity κxx sets in below approximately 25 K. This field-suppression effect at 15 T becomes as large as 80% at low temperatures, suggesting a large spin contribution κxxsp in κxx. We also find clear thermal Hall signals in the spin liquid phase in all Cd-K samples. The magnitude of the thermal Hall conductivity κxy shows a significant dependence on the sample’s scattering time, as seen in the rise of the peak κxy value in almost linear fashion with the magnitude of κxx. On the other hand, the temperature dependence of κxy is similar in all Cd-K samples; κxy shows a peak at almost the same temperature of the peak of the phonon thermal conductivity κxxph which is estimated by κxx at 15 T. These results indicate the presence of a dominant phonon thermal Hall κxyph at 15 T. In addition to κxyph, we find that the field dependence of κxy at low fields turns out to be nonlinear at low temperatures, concomitantly with the appearance of the field suppression of κxx, indicating the presence of a spin thermal Hall κxysp at low fields. Remarkably, by assembling the κxx dependence of κxysp data of other kagome antiferromagnets, we find that, whereas κxysp stays a constant in the low-κxx region, κxysp starts to increase as κxx does in the high-κxx region. This κxx dependence of κxysp indicates the presence of both intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms in the spin thermal Hall effect in kagome antiferromagnets. Furthermore, both κxyph and κxysp disappear in the antiferromagnetic ordered phase at low fields, showing that phonons alone do not exhibit the thermal Hall effect. A high field above approximately 7 T induces κxyph, concomitantly with a field-induced increase of κxx and the specific heat, suggesting a coupling of the phonons to the field-induced spin excitations as the origin of κxyph.

Stress-induced release of glucocorticoid is an important amyloidogenic factor that upregulates amyloid precursor protein (APP) and β secretase 1 (BACE1) levels. Glucocorticoid also contributes to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by increasing ER-mitochondria connectivity, in which amyloid β (Aβ) processing occurs rigorously because of its lipid raft-rich characteristics. However, the mechanism by which glucocorticoid enhances γ-secretase activity in the mitochondrial-associated membrane of ER (MAM) and subsequent accumulation of mitochondrial Aβ is unclear. In this study, we determined how glucocorticoid enhances Aβ production in MAM using SH-SY5Y cells and ICR mice. First, we observed that cortisol-induced Aβ accumulation in mitochondria preceded its extracellular apposition by enhancing γ-secretase activity, which was the result of increased presenilin 1 (PSEN1) localization in MAM. Screening data revealed that cortisol selectively downregulated the ER retrieval protein Rer1, which triggered its maturation and subsequent entry into the endocytic secretory pathway of PSEN1. Accordingly, overexpression of RER1 reversed the deleterious effects of mitochondrial Aβ on mitochondrial respiratory function and neuronal cell viability. Notably, we found that cortisol guided the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) to bind directly to the RER1 promoter, thus trans-repressing its expression. Inhibiting GR function reduced Aβ accumulation at mitochondria and improved the outcome of a spatial memory task in mice exposed to corticosterone. Taken together, glucocorticoid enhances PSEN1-mediated Aβ generation at MAM by downregulating Rer1, which is a potential target at early stages of AD pathogenesis. © 2023, The Authors. We propose a simple and generic construction of the variational tensor network operators to study the quantum spin systems by the synergy of ideas from the imaginary-time evolution and the variational optimization of trial wave functions. By applying these operators to simple initial states, accurate variational ground-state wave functions with extremely few parameters can be obtained. Furthermore, the framework can be applied to spontaneously study symmetry-breaking, symmetry-protected topological, and intrinsic topologically ordered phases, and we show that symmetries of the local tensors associated with these phases can emerge directly after the optimization without any gauge fixing. This provides a universal way to identify quantum phase transitions without prior knowledge of the system.
