Vertical green systems (VGS) are expected to mitigate outdoor heat stress through a transpiration cooling effect. There is a lack of knowledge on how VGS influence outdoor thermal comfort, particularly focusing on energy flux. This study quantifies the outdoor cooling effects of VGS, and distinguishes the energy flux between them and outdoor urban spaces. In addition, we discuss their cooling efficiency. Outdoor experiments were conducted during the hot summer period on building facades in city. Our study on VGS focused on the measurement of climatic variables, surface temperatures of plant leaves (Fatsia japonica), net radiation, and estimating transpiration and evaporation. The surface temperature of VGS were up to 4.3 °C higher than those of high albedo walls, while the reflected radiations (short and long-wave radiation) were 120 w/m2 lower than albedo walls during the day. The mean radiant temperature (MRT) of VGS was 3.02 °C lower than the high albedo wall during daytime, except in the case of shaded areas (0.45 °C). We confirmed that the cooling efficiency of transpiration was 7.38 times more effective than evaporation from soil without plants. Therefore, VGS is efficient in terms of long-term heat reduction and can be an effective strategy to mitigate outdoor heat stress. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We study the simplest quantum lattice spin model for the two-dimensional (2D) cubic ferromagnet by means of mean-field analysis and tensor network calculation. While both methods give rise to similar results in detecting related phases, the 2D infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) calculation provides more accurate values of transition points. Near the phase boundary, moreover, our iPEPS results indicate that it is more difficult to pin down the orientation of magnetic easy axes, and we interpret it as the easy-axis softening. This phenomenon implies an emergence of continuous U(1) symmetry, which is indicated by the low-energy effective model and has been analytically shown by the field theory. Our model and study provide a concrete example for utilizing iPEPS near the critical region, showing that the emergent phenomenon living on the critical points can already be captured by iPEPS with a rather small bond dimension.

Aggregates consisting of submicron-sized cohesive dust grains are ubiquitous, and understanding the collisional behavior of dust aggregates is essential. It is known that low-speed collisions of dust aggregates result in either sticking or bouncing, and local and permanent compaction occurs near the contact area upon collision. In this study, we perform numerical simulations of collisions between two aggregates and investigate their compressive behavior. We find that the maximum compression length is proportional to the radius of aggregates and increases with the collision velocity. We also reveal that a theoretical model of contact between two elastoplastic spheres successfully reproduces the size- and velocity-dependence of the maximum compression length observed in our numerical simulations. Our findings on the plastic deformation of aggregates during collisional compression provide a clue to understanding the collisional growth process of aggregates. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Sargassum horneri (S. horneri) is an edible species of large brown algae inhabiting along the coasts of northeastern Asia. The study focuses on the impact of celluclast enzyme extract of S. hoeneri (SHC) on various immune cell populations in splenocytes including granulocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and T lymphocytes. SHC alone increased the population of granulocytes and macrophages and the secretion of M1 macrophage-derived cytokines (TNF-α, IL-22), and M2 macrophage-derived cytokines (IL-4, IL-10). Interestingly, however, SHC suppressed the concanavalin A (Con A)-expanded populations of macrophages, dendritic cells, granulocytes, T and B cells, and Con A-promoted secretion of M1-macrophage derived cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-17, IL-22) and M2-macrophage derived cytokines (IL-4, IL-10, IL-13, TGF-β). SHC further restrained the Th1, Th2, and Th17 cell responses through attenuating the expression of respective transcription factors T-bet, Gata3, and Rorγt. The anti-inflammatory property of SHC is highlighted through its influence on cytokine production, particularly in the NF-κB pathway, and the attenuation of Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling. The results reveal that SHC acts as both an immunostimulator and an inhibitor of hyperimmune reactions, showcasing its potential therapeutic applications in conditions involving dysregulated immune responses such as autoimmune diseases and inflammatory disorders. This positions SHC as a promising candidate for the development of functional ingredients with diverse applications encompassing the realms of food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. © 2024

The Hippo pathway is a signaling pathway implicated in various diseases, including cancer, that regulates the levels of yes-associated protein (YAP) and PDZ-binding motif (TAZ) proteins. These proteins bind to transcriptional enhanced associate domain (TEAD) proteins and function as transcription factors in the nucleus, producing oncogenic target genes such as CTGF and CYR61. TEAD proteins require palmitoylation via a covalent bond with cysteine in the central pocket to bind YAP/TAZ. Therefore, competitive inhibition that prevents palmitoylation could serve as an effective anticancer strategy. In this study, we analyzed the crystal structures of known inhibitors to identify new binding spots that were previously unexplored, with the aim of discovering more potent compounds using structure-based drug design. Consequently, we identified a novel hydrogen-bonding site and discovered Compound 2, which effectively binds to this site, as confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Furthermore, Compound 2 exhibited stable pharmacokinetic properties and demonstrated impressive efficacy in a mouse xenograft model. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Cholera is a highly contagious and lethal waterborne disease induced by an infection with Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae) secreting cholera toxin (CTx). Cholera toxin subunit B (CTxB) from the CTx specifically binds with monosialo-tetra-hexosyl-ganglioside (GM1) found on the exterior cell membrane of an enterocyte. Owing to the pathological process of CTx, a biomimetic electrochemical biosensor (CCB) was developed by applying GM1-expressing Caco-2 cell membrane (CCM) on the electrode surface of the biosensor for CTx detection. Briefly, the electrode surface was functionalized with CCM using the vesicle fusion method. The specific binding between GM1 and CTxB on the electrode surface was verified using confocal laser scanning microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The CTxB detection performances of the CCB, including sensitivity, selectivity, and long-term stability, were determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Based on the results, the CCB had an excellent limit of detection of ~11.46 nM and a detection range spanning 100 ng/mL - 1 mg/mL. Further, the CCB had high selectivity for the CTxB compared to different interfering molecules, which are abundant constituents of intestinal fluid and fecal matter in the human body. The long-term stability of the CCBs was also verified for 3 weeks using EIS. Overall, the CCB was found to have an excellent potential for application to point-of-care and cost-effective testing for CTxB detection in developing countries. © 2022, The Authors. Comprehensive analysis of the chloroplast genome and phylogenetic relationships ofSasa quelpaertensisNakai

Jeju-Joritdae (Sasa quelpaertensisNakai) is a broad-leaved bamboo grass endemic to Mount Halla, Jeju Island, South Korea. In this study, we report the complete chloroplast genome sequence ofS. quelpaertensis. Its chloroplast genome is 139,730 bp in size and consists of a large single-copy (LSC, 83,351 bp) region, one small single-copy (SSC, 12,788 bp) region, and two inverted repeats (IRs, 21,796 bp each). The chloroplast genome ofS. quelpaertensisencodes 131 genes, including 86 protein-coding, 37 tRNA, and 8 rRNA genes. The overall GC content of theS. quelpaertensischloroplast genome is 38.86%. Phylogenetic analysis using the chloroplast genome sequence showed thatS. quelpaertensisis closely related toSasa veitchiiandSasella kogasensis. These findings provide valuable genomic resources for future studies of theSasagenus in South Korea and other countries encompassing its distribution area.
