Hybridization in brain-computer interface (BCI) is an active research assessed by integrating more than two modalities to control multiple user commands and enhance the BCI performance. However, evaluation of these hybrid modalities is substantially challenging which necessitates robust techniques that can efficiently analyze the underlying dynamics of the brain signal. Fuzzy entropy based approaches are the objective measurements of evaluating the dynamic electroencephalography (EEG) complexity reflecting its ability to adapt to the variabilities of the brain. In this study, we proposed an empirical mode decomposition (EMD) featured fuzzy entropy method by applying coarse-graining to the time series signal at a multi-scale level (EMFuzzyEn) to efficiently discriminate the target and non-target events, and improve classification performance during simultaneous steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) and rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) BCI system framework. The proposed hybrid BCI framework with applied canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and EMFuzzyEn algorithm to the SSVEP and RSVP classifications achieved an offline accuracy of 87.41% for 12-channel combination and an online accuracy of 84.69% for 2-channel combination. The results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm enhanced the BCI performance by 5.85% (offline) and 6.78% (online) compared to our previous ERP-based classification results. Further, the EMFuzzyEn algorithm achieved highest classification accuracy across all channel combinations compared to the multi-scale fuzzy (MFuzzyEn) and non-fuzzy (ShEn, AppEn, CondEn) entropy algorithms. Overall, our empirical results confirmed that the proposed EMFuzzyEn algorithm significantly increased the EEG complexity during target tasks thereby enhancing the discrimination between target and non-target tasks, which might be a potential indicator to measure the brain dynamics and enhance the BCI performance.

How mock jurors' cognitive processing and defendants' immigrant status and ethnicity relate to decisions in capital trials

Objectives This study examined how defendants' immigrant status and ethnicity interact with evidence strength and mock jurors' cognitive processing traits to influence decisions in a capital trial. Methods A sample of jury-eligible participants acted as mock jurors and read a trial summary in which defendant immigrant status, defendant ethnicity, and evidence strength were experimentally manipulated. They then weighed aggravators relative to mitigators, recommended a sentence, and completed measures of rational and experiential processing. Logistic regression was used to test predicted interactions. Results Mock jurors weighed aggravators over mitigators when the defendant was a Latino citizen and when the defendant was an undocumented immigrant. There were no interactions on sentencing decisions. Evidence strength and experiential processing were positively related to rendering a death sentence. Conclusions A defendant's immigrant status and ethnicity might indirectly lead to punitive decisions in capital cases because they influence how jurors weigh aggravators and mitigators.

Thyroid cancer and endocrine disruptive chemicals: a case-control study on per-fluoroalkyl substances and other persistent organic pollutants

Objective: The aim was to evaluate the possible association between some endocrine disruptive chemicals and thyroid cancer (TC) in an Italian case-control cohort. Methods: We enrolled 112 TC patients and 112 sex- and age-matched controls without known thyroid diseases. Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), poly-chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (4,4'-DDT and 4,4'-DDE) were measured in the serum by liquid or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Unconditional logistic regression, Bayesan kernel machine regression and weighted quantile sum models were used to estimate the association between TC and pollutants' levels, considered individually or as mixture. BRAFV600E mutation was assessed by standard methods. Results: The detection of perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) was positively correlated to TC (OR = 2.03, 95% CI: 1.10-3.75, P = 0.02), while a negative association was found with perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) levels (OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.41-0.98, P = 0.04). Moreover, perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) was positively associated with the presence of thyroiditis, while PFHxS and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) with higher levels of presurgical thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). PFHxS, PFOS, PFNA, and PFDA were correlated with less aggressive TC, while poly-chlorinated biphenyls (PCB-105 and PCB-118) with larger and more aggressive tumors. Statistical models showed a negative association between pollutants' mixture and TC. BRAF V600E mutations were associated with PCB-153, PCB-138, and PCB-180. Conclusion: Our study suggests, for the first time in a case-control population, that exposure to some PFAS and PCBs associates with TC and some clinical and molecular features. On the contrary, an inverse correlation was found with both PFHxS and pollutants' mixture, likely due to a potential reverse causality.

The main aim of the present study was to determine if synapses from the exceptionally small brain of the Etruscan shrew show any peculiarities compared to the much larger human brain. We analyzed the cortical synaptic density and a variety of structural characteristics of 7,239 3D reconstructed synapses, using using Focused Ion Beam/Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB/SEM). We found that some of the general synaptic characteristics are remarkably similar to those found in the human cerebral cortex. However, the cortical volume of the human brain is about 50,000 times larger than the cortical volume of the Etruscan shrew, while the total number of cortical synapses in human is only 20,000 times the number of synapses in the shrew, and synaptic junctions are 35% smaller in the Etruscan shrew. Thus, the differences in the number and size of synapses cannot be attributed to a brain size scaling effect but rather to adaptations of synaptic circuits to particular functions.

HiCImpute: A Bayesian hierarchical model for identifying structural zeros and enhancing single cell Hi-C data

Single cell Hi-C techniques enable one to study cell to cell variability in chromatin interactions. However, single cell Hi-C (scHi-C) data suffer severely from sparsity, that is, the existence of excess zeros due to insufficient sequencing depth. Complicating the matter further is the fact that not all zeros are created equal: some are due to loci truly not interacting because of the underlying biological mechanism (structural zeros);others are indeed due to insufficient sequencing depth (sampling zeros or dropouts), especially for loci that interact infrequently. Differentiating between structural zeros and dropouts is important since correct inference would improve downstream analyses such as clustering and discovery of subtypes. Nevertheless, distinguishing between these two types of zeros has received little attention in the single cell Hi-C literature, where the issue of sparsity has been addressed mainly as a data quality improvement problem. To fill this gap, in this paper, we propose HiCImpute, a Bayesian hierarchical model that goes beyond data quality improvement by also identifying observed zeros that are in fact structural zeros. HiCImpute takes spatial dependencies of scHi-C 2D data structure into account while also borrowing information from similar single cells and bulk data, when such are available. Through an extensive set of analyses of synthetic and real data, we demonstrate the ability of HiCImpute for identifying structural zeros with high sensitivity, and for accurate imputation of dropout values. Downstream analyses using data improved from HiCImpute yielded much more accurate clustering of cell types compared to using observed data or data improved by several comparison methods. Most significantly, HiCImpute-improved data have led to the identification of subtypes within each of the excitatory neuronal cells of L4 and L5 in the prefrontal cortex. Developing a multi-criteria prioritization tool to catalyze TOD on publicly owned land areas

Public agencies can take a leading role in catalyzing TOD by making land available to developers (selling or leasing land, potentially below market prices). In particular, park-and-ride areas that are publicly owned can be leveraged to support TOD uses, such as affordable housing, office space, small businesses, and mixed-use buildings given their convenient access to transit systems and often large land areas. However, few previous studies have discussed the use of publicly owned park-and-rides, which are an important component of publicly owned land, as a catalyst for TOD. To fill the gap in the literature and effectively support TOD planning, this research developed a multi-criteria prioritization tool to identify the most promising locations for TOD and tested it at three park-and-ride sites owned by the Washington State Department of Transportation. The tool was developed through the Delphi process, which is an effective and inexpensive approach to evaluate relevant indicators by synthesizing the opinions of experts from various backgrounds. Five categories with a total of 14 TOD indicators, including transit supportive land-use zoning, job accessibility, land price, land-use mix, and household income, were selected as measures of TOD suitability. The importance of these indicators varied with three different TOD scenarios: (1) emphasis on affordable housing, (2) emphasis on market-rate housing, and (3) emphasis on mixed-use development. Using the calculated suitability scores, this tool can prioritize potential TOD sites for further review.

Temporal and spatial dissimilarities in an intertidal fish assemblage in the South Pacific Ocean: The role of the ENSO process and intrinsic habitat conditions in emerging patterns

An intertidal fish assemblage was studied in central Chile for 15 years in three localities: Isla Negra, El Tabo, and Las Cruces. Analyses of their multivariate dissimilarities were carried out considering temporal and spatial factors. Temporal factors included intra-annual and year-to-year variability. Spatial factors included locality, intertidal tidepool height, and each tidepool considered as a unique unit. Complementary to this, we tested the hypothesis that the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) would help explain year-to-year dissimilarities in the multivariate structure of this fish assemblage for the 15 years of data. To this end, the ENSO was regarded as a continuous inter-annual process as well as a set of discrete events. Additionally, dissimilarities in the temporal dynamics of the fish assemblage were evaluated considering each locality and tidepool unique units. Results indicated the following: (i) The most representative species for the whole area and period of the study were Scartichthys viridis (44 %), Helcogrammoides chilensis (17 %), Girella laevifrons (10 %), Graus nigra (7 %), Auchenionchus microcirrhis (5 %), and Helcogrammoides cunninghami (4 %);(ii) there is intra-annual (i.e., seasonality) and year-to-year multivariate variability in fish assemblage dissimilarities throughout the entire area of study, including all the tidepools and localities;(iii) when considering the spatial factor specifically, each tidepool unit, as well as their heights and localities, presented their own unique temporal yearto-year dynamics. The latter can be explained by the ENSO factor, also considering the intensity of the El Nino and La Nina events. Teaching and Researching Genre Knowledge: Toward an Enhanced Theoretical Framework

Increased attention to genre in writing studies has brought a proliferation of new terms and concepts for capturing the complexity of writers' knowledge about genres, including genre knowledge, genre awareness, recontextualization, conditional knowledge, and metacognition. Definitions of these concepts have at times conflicted, and their interrelationships are often unclear. Furthermore, scholarship has tended to overlook the role of multiple languages in writers' genre knowledge. In this article, we first trace the use of related terminology and demonstrate the need for theoretical clarity. We then propose a theoretical framework that articulates key layers of genre knowledge and their interrelations, presuming a multilingual writer. Finally, we share examples of how this proposed framework may be used in teaching and researching genre knowledge. Ultimately, we aim to contribute to ongoing theoretical, empirical, and pedagogical explorations and applications of knowing and learning genres.

Nervous System Deletion of Mammalian INDY in Mice Mimics Dietary Restriction-Induced Memory Enhancement

Reduced expression of the Indy (I'm Not Dead Yet) gene extends life span in Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster and improves the metabolic heath of Mus musculus through inducing a physiological status akin to dietary restriction (DR). Although the function of Indy in aging and hepatic metabolism has been extensively studied, its role in the mouse nervous system remains unclear. Here, we explore the effect of mammalian Indy (mIndy, SLC13A5) gene deletion on murine cognitive function. Similar to what is seen in DR animals, systemic deletion of the mIndy gene (mIndy knockout [KO]) significantly improves memory performance and motor coordination of mice. Both DR and mIndy KO mice act normally in other behavioral tasks, including emotional, social, and food-seeking behaviors. Moreover, we find that tissue-specific deletion of mIndy in the nervous system is sufficient to improve memory performance, while liver-specific deletion has no effect on memory, and results in tests of motor coordination show no changes in either mutant. Mice with systemic or nervous system deletion of mIndy also exhibit increased hippocampal neurogenesis and dendritic spine formation in dentate granule cells;these changes are well-documented contributors to enhanced memory performance. Together, our studies demonstrate a critical role for brain-derived mIndy expression in the regulation of memory function in animals.
