Lacto-N-fucopentaose-III (LNFPIII) ameliorates acute aberrations in hippocampal synaptic transmission in a Gulf War Illness animal model

Approximately one-third of Persian Gulf War veterans are afflicted by Gulf War Illness (GWI), a chronic multisymptom condition that fundamentally presents with cognitive deficits (i.e., learning and memory impairments) and neuroimmune dysfunction (i.e., inflammation). Factors associated with GWI include overexposures to neurotoxic pesticides and nerve agent prophylactics such as permethrin (PM) and pyridostigmine bromide (PB), respectively. GWI-related neurological impairments associated with PB-PM overexposures have been recapitulated in animal models;however, there is a paucity of studies assessing PB-PM-related aberrations in hippocampal synaptic plasticity and transmission that may underlie behavioral impairments. Importantly, FDAapproved neuroactive treatments are currently unavailable for GWI. In the present study, we assessed the efficacy of an immunomodulatory therapeutic, lacto-N-fucopentaose-III (LNFPIII), on ameliorating acute effects of in vivo PB-PM exposure on synaptic plasticity and transmission as well as trophic factor/cytokine expression along the hippocampal dorsoventral axis. PB-PM exposure resulted in hippocampal synaptic transmission deficits 48 h post-exposure, a response that was ameliorated by LNFPIII coadministration, particularly in the dorsal hippocampus (dH). LNFPIII coadministration also enhanced synaptic transmission in the dH and the ventral hippocampus (vH). Notably, LNFPIII coadministration elevated long-term potentiation in the dH. Further, PB-PM exposure and LNFPIII coadministration uniquely altered key inflammatory cytokine and trophic factor production in the dH and the vH. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that PB-PM exposure impaired hippocampal synaptic responses 48 h post-exposure, impairments that differentially manifested along the dorsoventral axis. Importantly, LNFPIII ameliorated GWI-related electrophysiological deficits, a beneficial effect indicating the potential efficacy of LNFPIII for treating GWI.

Soiling of solar cover glass is a major cause for efficiency loss of solar photovoltaic modules. Anti-soiling coatings can be used to reduce the rate of soiling and lower cleaning costs. The efficiency of these coatings has been demonstrated in laboratory and field tests, but the mechanisms and relevant parameters are still not well *** this article, we present a study on the influence of surface structure of hydrophilic sol-gel coatings on their anti-soiling performance in terms of both, dust accumulation and subsequent indoor tests for dust removal by wind. The surface structure of the films originates from the addition of colloidal silica particles of different sizes to the sols used for film preparation. In the dust deposition experiments, standardized test dust and dust collected from solar installations were used. Repeated tests were conducted under controlled *** the case of dust deposition, the accumulation of dust particles larger than -10 mu m is strongly reduced, in relation to bare glass, by the anti-soiling effect of all coatings regardless of their surface *** the dust removal via wind, coatings that bear a smoother surface structure are cleaned more easily than coatings with a rougher surface structure. Additionally, larger and rounder dust particles are removed more easily from coatings with a rougher surface structure (structure height over -40 nm), while smaller and more irregularly shaped dust particles are removed more easily from coatings with a smoother surface structure.

Objective: To explore the accuracy and precision of prognostic tools used in older people in predicting mortality, hospitalization, and nursing home admission across different settings and timings. Design: Systematic review and meta -analysis of prospective and retrospective studies. Data sources: A systematic search from database inception until 01st February 2023 was run in Medline, Embase, Cinhal, Cochrane Library. Eligibility criteria: Studies were eligible if they reported accuracy (area under the curve [AUC]) and/or precision (C -index) for the prognostic index in relation to any of the following outcomes: mortality, hospitalization, and nursing home admission. Data extraction and synthesis: Two independent reviewers extracted data. Data were pooled using a random effects model. The risk of bias was assessed with the Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool. If more than three studies for the same setting and time were available, a meta -analysis was performed and evaluated using the GRADE tool;other data were reported descriptively. Results: Among 16,082 studies initially considered, 159 studies with a total of 2398856 older people (mean age: 78 years) were included. The majority of the studies was carried out in hospital or medical wards. In the community setting, only two tools (Health Assessment Tool and the Multidimensional Prognostic Index, MPI) had good precision for long-term mortality. In emergency department setting, Barthel Index had an excellent accuracy in predicting short-term mortality. In medical wards, the MPI had a moderate certainty of the evidence in predicting short-term mortality (13 studies;11,787 patients;AUC =0.79 and 4 studies;3915 patients;Cindex =0.82). Similar findings were available for MPI when considering longer follow-up periods. When considering nursing home and surgical wards, the literature was limited. Aims: The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the combined middle and inferior meatal antrostomy (MIMA) in management of patients with maxillary fungal sinusitis. Material and Methods: Design: retrospective cross sectional study. Setting and subjects: From September 2018 to March 2021, fifty-five patients with non-invasive maxillary fungal sinusitis, who underwent transnasal endoscopic combined MIMA. Methods: The study compared patients' pre- and post-operative subjective symptoms, including nasal obstruction, discharge, facial pain or pressure, halitosis, anosmia, and other non-specific symptoms. Endoscopic characteristics of recurrent fungal maxillary sinusitis and postoperative complications were also observed. Closure of the IMA site was evaluated at three and six months post-surgery and patients were categorized into three groups based on closure degree. Results: All clinical symptoms, including nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, nasal pruritus, anosmia, halitosis, sneezing, facial pain, ophthalmic and otologic symptoms, were resolved over six months after combined MIMA in majority of cases (94 - 100%). After three and six months, the postoperative endoscopic evaluation revealed recurrent fungal maxillary sinusitis in 1.8% and 5.4% of cases, respectively. Partial stenosis of the inferior antrostomy was observed in 7.2% and 16% of cases, while complete stenosis was noted in 3.6% and 7.2% of cases after three months and six months. Conclusions: The combined MIMA is effective and has better outcomes than the medial meatal antrostomy approach alone without additional operative time.

Diet Quality and Physical Fighting Among Youth: A Cross-National Study

The predictors of engaging in physical violence appear to be quite diverse, covering an array of social and psychological risk factors. The present study expands upon this literature by exploring the link between diet quality and physical fighting during early adolescence using cross-national data from the 2005/2006 Health Behaviors of School Children (HBSC) survey. The results reveal that the rate of physical fighting was 40% higher among youths with lower quality diets, whereas the odds of frequent physical fighting were 68% higher, relative to youths with better diets. Ancillary analyses reveal that (a) the link between diet quality and physical fighting was significantly larger among females and (b) significant associations between diet quality and physical fighting were detected in 38 of the 40 countries examined. Strategies designed to improve diet quality among youth may have the added benefit of reducing the likelihood of physical fighting and its negative sequelae.

The emergence of next generation sequencing (NGS) is revolutionizing the potential to address complex microbiological challenges in the water industry. NGS technologies can provide holistic insight into micro-bial communities and their functional capacities in water and wastewater systems, thus eliminating the need to develop a new assay for each target organism or gene. However, several barriers have hampered wide-scale adoption of NGS by the water industry, including cost, need for specialized expertise and equipment, challenges with data analysis and interpretation, lack of standardized methods, and the rapid pace of development of new technologies. In this critical review, we provide an overview of the current state of the science of NGS technologies as they apply to water, wastewater, and recycled water. In addi-tion, a systematic literature review was conducted in which we identified over 600 peer-reviewed jour-nal articles on this topic and summarized their contributions to six key areas relevant to the water and wastewater fields: taxonomic classification and pathogen detection, functional and catabolic gene charac-terization, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiling, bacterial toxicity characterization, Cyanobacteria and harmful algal bloom identification, and virus characterization. For each application, we have presented key trends, noteworthy advancements, and proposed future directions. Changes in canid cranial morphology induced by captivity and conservation implications

Hypercarnivorous mammal species are among the most vulnerable to population losses and endangerment. Among species belonging to Family Canidae, hypercarnivores are frequently subject to intense conservation efforts including captive breeding and reintroduction attempts. However, hypercarnivorous species may be most vulnerable to morphological changes in captivity, potentially altering their cranial functionality and limiting their reintroduction success. Other canid species with varying dietary preferences are also maintained in captivity, although it is unknown if morphological changes are prevalent across all captive canid populations or if these changes are concentrated primarily within hypercarnivores. To examine whether canids display morphological changes in captivity regardless of dietary preference, we assessed cranial and mandibular shape of 1621 specimens representing 15 canid species using geometric morphometric techniques. All hypercarnivores (4 species) and many hypocarnivores (5 of 7 species) differed between captive and wild populations in at least one shape variable. None of the mesocarnivores (4 species) differed in any shape variable. Among the carnivory types, hypercarnivorous species had the most pronounced differences in shape, particularly associated with a widening and shortening of the cranium within captive populations. Changes in cranial shape may impact an animal's ability to successfully capture and consume prey, therefore differences in cranial shape in captive populations may represent an obstacle to future reintroduction success. By examining cranial and mandibular shape differences between captive and wild populations, we explore the long-term impacts of captivity in canids in an effort to mitigate these negative effects in the future and increase the potential for reintroduction success.

graph-GPA 2.0: A Graphical Model for Multi-disease Analysis of GWAS Results with Integration of Functional Annotation Data

Motivation: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have successfully identified a large number of genetic variants associated with traits and diseases. However, it still remains challenging to fully understand functional mechanisms underlying many associated variants. This is especially the case when we are interested in variants shared across multiple phenotypes. To address this challenge, we propose graph-GPA 2.0 (GGPA 2.0), a novel statistical framework to integrate GWAS datasets for multiple phenotypes and incorporate functional annotations within a unified framework. Results: First, we conducted simulation studies to evaluate GGPA 2.0. The results indicate that incorporating functional annotation data using GGPA 2.0 does not only improve detection of disease-associated variants, but also allows to identify more accurate relationships among diseases. Second, we analyzed five autoimmune diseases and five psychiatric disorders with the functional annotations derived from GenoSkyline and GenoSkyline-Plus and the prior disease graph generated by biomedical literature mining. For autoimmune diseases, GGPA 2.0 identified enrichment for blood, especially B cells and regulatory T cells across multiple diseases. Psychiatric disorders were enriched for brain, especially prefrontal cortex and inferior temporal lobe for bipolar disorder (BIP) and schizophrenia (SCZ), respectively. Finally, GGPA 2.0 successfully identified the pleiotropy between BIP and SCZ. These results demonstrate that GGPA 2.0 can be a powerful tool to identify associated variants associated with each phenotype or those shared across multiple phenotypes, while also promoting understanding of functional mechanisms underlying the associated variants. Acceptability of Phone Calls and Texts to Promote Healthy Behaviors Among Spanish-Speaking Hispanics

Individualized short message service (SMS;i.e., text messages) and/or phone calls (PC) in Spanish were examined as an effective interventional approach to increasing daily fruits and vegetables (F&V) and physical activity (PA) among community-dwelling Spanish-speaking Hispanics. Participants were randomized to one of three ordered groups: Control (n = 25), SMS (n = 27), or SMS + PC (n = 26). PA and F&V intake were measured at baseline and 12 weeks later, when acceptability and usefulness were evaluated. Using the Cochran-Armitage test, we found an increasing trend in the proportion of vegetable intake (p = .03) and leisure time PA (p = .004) across the interventions. Most respondents from the SMS and SMS + PC groups approved the modalities and frequency of contact and reported following the advice provided. SMS + PC was the most effective intervention to improve PA and vegetable intake among respondents. These findings support feasibility and acceptability of using remote access platforms, specifically, text and phone-based health communication strategies, with Spanish-speaking participants.
