Most HIFU procedures use the thermal effect of ultrasound, and information about temperature is directly related to the effect and side effects of the procedure. In the case of the human body, there are complex structures including bones around the target tissue to be irradiated with ultrasound. Thermal lesions in human tissue differ from thermal lesions in ideal conditions due to the standing waves generated by the target tissue and surrounding structures. If a high temperature rise is induced at a location other than the focal point of the HIFU, side effects of the procedure and patient safety may be threatened. In this study, two conditions were simulated, a tissue-mimicking phantom and a human body, in order to compare differences in thermal lesions. In the simulation results, the shape of the thermal lesion generated in the two conditions was not the same, and there was a difference in the location where the temperature was increased. © ICA *** rights reserved

The cyclic variation in echogenicity (CVE) was observed from the cross-sectional images of the common carotid artery using coded harmonic imaging of a GE ultrasound system. The objective of this research is to study the smoking acute effects on the amplitude of the CVE (A_(cve)). A_(cve) was analyzed among the 28 smokers before and after 1-2 cigarettes were smoked. The smokers were optimally divided into two clusters with respect to the change in A_(cve) and the intrinsic characteristics of smokers (i.e., daily consumed cigarettes and smoking years) through a two-step cluster analysis (TSCA). The relative change of A_(cve) after smoking was significantly higher in the heavy smoker cluster compared with the light smoker cluster. However, there is no significant difference in the absolute value of A_(cve) between before and after smoking for both two clusters. The effect of tissue attenuation on A_(cve) was compensated with body mass index (BMI). The compensated parameter, A'_(cve), is significantly increased in heavy smoker group after smoking (BS: 0.47+-7.4;AS: 5.4+-8.0;p<0.05). It is in agreement with the analytical result of (DELTA)A_(cve). Furthermore, after smoking, A'_(cve) is significant higher in heavy smoker group (5.4+-8.0), compared with light smoker group (-1.3+-6.7;p<0.05). It suggests that the compensation of A_(cve) is help to reduce the interference from tissue attenuation and is good for the comparison among individuals.

The present study was to understand the true power irradiated to the cell line cultured on a culture well, in relation to the nominal power from ultrasonic transducer, and to characterize the temporal variations of the acoustic pressure exerted on the cell. Numerical simulation was carried out for a typical-culture well exposed to 1 MHz continuous ultrasound generated by a circular transducer contact underneath the well. The results showed that the ultrasonic pressure exposed to the cell layer in the well was 6.7 times larger than the nominal pressure of the ultrasonic transducer. The ultrasonic pressure in the transient period rose rapidly and was widely variable, and the temporal peak was even greater than that of the steady state period. This suggests that the cells undergo characteristically different ultrasonic exposure between the transient and the steady state period.

Tofu was suggested as Tissue Mimicking Materials (TMMs) due to its low cost, availability, gelatinous nature, and shape flexibility. However, the similarity in acoustic properties of the different packets of Tofu and acorn curd (Muk) is critical for TMMs but not fully investigated yet. In order to improve the accuracy for time-consuming and multi-stepped measurements of acoustic properties, an automated measurement system was developed. Using the automated system, the acoustic properties Tofu and Muk were measured to know whether they are similar among the different samples. In conclusion, the acoustic properties were measured to be similar among the different packets of Tofu and Muk, suggesting them as potential TMMs.

In this paper, computational strategies are defined for protein quantisation by considering the shapes of the protein spots. The technique uses the clustering techniques like K-mean and fuzzy C-mean to distinguish between different types of protein spots and unwanted artifacts. The resulting technique is used in 2D electrophoresis gel image processor for Matlab with other image manipulation techniquies on the experimental data to evaluate its performance.

PMN-PT, a piezoelectric single crystal, has been known to be a better material for transducer arrays due to its high electromechanical coupling coefficient (k33) and high dielectric and piezoelectric constants. It may also be good even for high frequency single element transducers using relatively high kt and low attenuation and velocity dispersion. However, it's challenging to fabricate high frequency transducers using PMN-PT since it is easily breakable and requires small area and thickness of the transducer. A KLM model was used to simulate a 40 MHz single element transducer including 2 matching layers and a conductive backing. The simulation showed that the PMN-PT transducer turned out to be better in sensitivity and bandwidth than a 40 MHz LiNbO3 transducer. A 40 MHz PMN-29%PT transducer was fabricated and the pulse echo signals were obtained and analyzed. Its sensitivity was found to be -48 dB and -6dB bandwidth was about 48%.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]).
