Sequence modeling faces challenges in capturing long-range dependencies across diverse tasks. Recent linear and transformer-based forecasters have shown superior performance in time series forecasting. However, they are constrained by their inherent inability to effectively address long-range dependencies in time series data, primarily due to using fixed-size inputs for prediction. Furthermore, they typically sacrifice essential temporal correlation among consecutive training samples by shuffling them into mini-batches. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a fast and effective Spectral Attention mechanism, which preserves temporal correlations among samples and facilitates the handling of long-range information while maintaining the base model structure. Spectral Attention preserves long-period trends through a low-pass filter and facilitates gradient to flow between samples. Spectral Attention can be seamlessly integrated into most sequence models, allowing models with fixed-sized look-back windows to capture long-range dependencies over thousands of steps. Through extensive experiments on 11 real-world time series datasets using 7 recent forecasting models, we consistently demonstrate the efficacy of our Spectral Attention mechanism, achieving state-of-the-art results. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. As the interest in ecosystem protection increases, many researchers are focusing on tracking flying insects to preserve biodiversity. Invasive alien species (IAS) such as Vespa velutina nigrithorax require extensive consideration in this regard owing to size and weight limitations. In this paper, we propose and experimentally validate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based trilateration system for localization and tracking of flying insects. The proposed tracking algorithm is based on the use of multiple omnidirectional antennas, and it improves the tracking accuracy and shortens the tracking time compared to those of the existing unidirectional antennas. In addition, we reduce the measurement error and noise by applying a finite impulse response (FIR) filter to the received signal strength (RSS) emitted from the radio-telemetry transmitter. A field experiment involving the proposed trilateration system was conducted in an apiary. This experiment was divided into three sub-experiments as follows: 1) behavior experiment, 2) ground truth experiment, and 3) localization and tracking experiment. The proposed system contributes to the research on UAV-based tracking systems that respond to the speed of spreading of invasive V. velutina.

The aviation sector has been one of the most significant contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions;there is an urgent need to transition from traditional fossil-based jet fuel to sustainable aviation fuel to meet net-zero targets by 2030. The use of renewable aviation fuel may be regarded as the most effective option for reducing GHG emissions in the aviation sector while allowing for long-term growth. In this study, the microalgae oil was transformed to develop hydrocarbons with the boiling point range of jet fuel. Following the transesterification of algal oil fatty acids to algal oil methyl ester, fractional distillation was carried out. The Box-Behnken technique was used to design experiments for efficient resource utilization by minimizing the number of tests during transesterification. The quantitative relationship function between input (molar ratio of methanol to oil, catalyst concentration, and temperature) and % yield of methyl ester as an output of the process was developed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The ANFIS (adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system) was utilized to develop a prognostic model with good prediction effectiveness. MORSM (multi-objective response surface methodology) was also used to build a prediction model using correlations. A set of statistical indicators and Theil's U2 were used to examine the prediction efficacy and model uncertainty of ANFIS and MORSM. On both statistical indices and Theil's U2, the ANFIS-based model outperformed. To get the best results, the desirability approach was used to improve operating parameters. According to the desirability approach, the best operating parameters were catalyst concentration at 2.09%, methanol to oil ratio at 9.17%, and temperature at 60.49 °C, which resulted in the greatest yield of 91%. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

The application of robust control method is required for the design of the automatic control system of the unmanned underwater vehicle which is operated in underwater environment under great disturbance. Sliding Perturbation Observer (SPO) was developed to overcome the chattering phenomenon which is a weak point of the sliding mode control. This control method can be applied to the control of underwater vehicle operating in strong environmental disturbances because it has the advantage of estimating and compensating for nonlinear components, modeling uncertainties and environmental disturbances of the system. In this study, the sliding mode control with sliding perturbation observer (SMCSPO) is simulated in an underwater vehicle to evaluate the disturbance compensation performance and compare it with a PID controller.

The CAI engine, a kind of HCCI engine, as a new type of gasoline engine is one of the eco-friendly engines. The main merits of CAI engines are low NOx emission and fuel economy. Combustion of CAI engine is purely dominated by fuel chemical reactions. In order to simulate the combustion of CAI engine, a reduced chemical kinetic mechanism of gasoline surrogate and multi-zone method is proposed in this paper. A reduced chemical kinetic mechanism for a gasoline surrogate was validated in this study for a CAI combustion. This gasoline surrogate was modeled as a blend of iso-octane, n-heptane, and toluene. This reduced mechanism consists of 49 species and 67 reactions and it includes main reaction paths of iso-octane, n-heptane, and toluene. A RCM was used for the validation of this reduced mechanism and matched with the modeling of the RCM using STAR-CD. The results of the experiment and the simulation showed good agreement. For the analysis of CAI combustion, a multi-zone method was developed and incorporated into the computational fluid dynamics code, STAR-CD. This coupled multi-zone model can calculate 3 dimensional computational fluid dynamics and multi-zoned chemical reaction simultaneously in one time step. In other words, every computational cell interacts with the adjacent cells during the chemical reaction process. The effect of the EGR gas uniformity and equivalence ratio were studied. In the same EGR gas quantity, EGR distribution could affect on engine performance. EGR leaned to cylinder wall could lower the pressure rise rate, so it can be adopted to solve the noise and vibration problem of CAI engines. Most developed countries face high and increasing rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Even in Korea, the ratio of death from CVD is increasing as well. Angioplasty or atherectomy treatments have been invented to achieve revascularization but, nevertheless, the failure rate is rather high for chronic total occlusions (CTO). Micro-robot surgery which has the benefits of precision and miniaturization is emerging as one of the CTO treatments. The micro-robot for CTO treatment should contain effective CTO removal tool. The mechanism of rotational atherectomy was applied to the robot because the Rotablator™ has been reported that it is effective for the calcified lesion. Although the micro-robot is designed to remove hard calcified lesion by rotational drill tool, miniaturized actuation system would not provide enough forces or torques for removal of the lesion. Therefore, the tool should be designed to require least forces and torques during drilling. In the present study a three-axis micro milling machine and dynamometer were used to characterize reaction torque and forces with three different tool shapes. The experimental results were examined to find correlations between torque/force and cutting speeds or tool shapes. Furthermore, the design of the burr which satisfies the least torque/force condition was derived in conclusion.
