This paper presents an automatic stress-relieving music recommendation system (ASMRS) for individual music listeners. The ASMRS uses a portable, wireless photoplethysmography module with a finger-type sensor, and a program that translates heartbeat signals from the sensor to the stress index. The sympathovagal balance index (SVI) was calculated from heart rate variability to assess the user's stress levels while listening to music. Twenty-two healthy volunteers participated in the experiment. The results have shown that the participants' SVI values are highly correlated with their prespecified music preferences. The sensitivity and specificity of the favorable music classification also improved as the number of music repetitions increased to 20 times. Based on the SVI values, the system automatically recommends favorable music lists to relieve stress for individuals.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most widely used physiological signal that provides fundamental health information. Conventional ECG uses gel-type ECG electrodes, however, the gel-type ECG electrode is inconvenient for long-term or daily-life ECG monitoring. Capacitive ECG sensor was implemented to overcome the shortcoming of gel-type ECG electrodes. The wireless power transfer (WPT) technology can improve ubiquitous healthcare, but the power consumption is an important factor of the system based on WPT. Previous study did not consider the power consumption of the system. In this study, we implemented a low-power capacitive ECG monitoring system. The supply power of the system was 5V, and Bluetooth low energy (BLE) module was applied to decrease the power consumption in wireless data transmission. The total power consumption of the system was 16.4 mW.

Tremor, which is a manifestation of the Parkinson's disease, is rhythmic and involuntary oscillation in the frequency range from 3 to 8 Hz. Physiological mechanisms of parkinsonian tremor have not been clearly revealed even though there have been many related studies. In this study, we attempted to analyze bilateral phase synchronization between both hands in order to interpret parkinsonian tremor dynamics which can be helpful to speculate the mechanisms of parkinsonian tremor. Eighteen subjects with Parkinson's disease participated in this study. Tremor was measured for 30 seconds by three axis accelerometer placed over the middle finger with sampling frequency of 64Hz and 12 bit A/D converter while subjects were resting on a chair and relaxing both hands on their knees. Three kinds of synchronization indexes, p, y and X, were employed to assess the synchronization strength for tremor between both hands. As a result, when bilateral difference of tremor amplitude became larger than specific value, phase synchronization strength was significantly increased. Therefore, we may suppose that the dynamics of parkinsonian tremor have two modes of the non-phase synchronization and phase synchronization between both limbs.

The objectives, design, implementation, as well as initial and ongoing assessment and evaluation of the Bio-Basics faculty short course are described. Course content was chosen on the assumption that participants would have little or no latest exposure to basic concepts and knowledge in modern biology. It was found that this short courses has been highly successful for those faculty members who dedicated themselves to regular participation. Long-term tracking of course participant productivity in biological or biomedical research areas and/or involving latest collaborations with life scientists has been initiated with the expectation that participants will in the long-term be better positioned for success in such efforts.

Insulin is a polypeptide hormone which is produced by the β-cell of pancreas and controls the blood glucose level in the human body. Enzymatic modification of human proinsulin using trypsin and carboxypeptidase B generally causes high accumulation of insulin derivatives, leading to more complicated purification processes. A simple method including citraconylation and decitraconylation in the enzymatic modification process was developed for the reduction of a major derivative, des-threonine human insulin. Addition of 3.0 g citraconic anhydride per g protein into the reaction solution led to the citraconylation of lysine residues in human proinsulin and reduction of relative des-threonine insulin content from 13.5 to 1.0%. After the enzymatic hydrolysis of the citraconylated proinsulin, 100% of lysine residues can be decitraconylated and restored by adjusting pH to 2-3 at 25 °C. Combination of hydrogen peroxide addition and citraconylation of proinsulin expressed in recombinant Escherichia coli remarkably improved the conversion yield of insulin from 52.7 to 77.7%. Consequently, citraconylation of lysine residues blocked the unexpected cleavage of human proinsulin by trypsin, minimized the formation of des-threonine insulin and hence increased the production yield of active insulin. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Surface electromyogram (sEMG) is often used by to objectively measure muscular activity during rehabilitation exercises. sEMG is accurate, but it is unsuitable for uses outside the clinic, and patients can benefit from an unobtrusive device which can be readily used to ubiquitously measure abdominal muscle activation. In this study, we present a pressure sensor system which can be latched onto a belt to measure abdominal muscle activation. sEMG and pressure sensor output were measured in 15 healthy young males during isometric trunk flexion exercise (public trials registration number, KCT0002351), and the results were highly correlated (median R > 0.939). As initial contact force can change the pressure sensor sensitivity, the experiment was performed at two different levels of belt tightness, but the correlations did not significantly improve after tightening the belt, suggesting that the system can be used to ubiquitously and unobtrusively monitor abdominal muscle activity with minimal discomfort. © 2018, © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Unstructured clinical texts contain patients’ disease related narratives, but it is required elaborate work to mine the kind of information. Especially for the classification of semantic types of a clinical term, implementations of domain knowledge from resources such as the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) are essential. The UMLS has a limitation in dealing with other languages. In this paper, we leverage Wikipedia as well as UMLS for clinical event extraction, especially from clinical narratives written in mixed-language. Semantic features for clinical terms are extracted based on semantic networks of hierarchical categories in Wikipedia. Semantic types for Korean clinical terms are detected by using translation links and semantic networks in Wikipedia. An additional remarkable feature is a controlled vocabulary of clue words which can be contextual evidence to determine clinical semantic types of a word. The experimental result on 150 discharge summaries written in English and Korean showed 75.9% in F1-measure. This result shows that the proposed features are effective for clinical event extraction. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

We hypothesize that periodically early, local suppression of cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLTs), which are potent inflammatory mediators, can reduce the fibrotic capsular contracture around silicone implants. We tested this hypothesis with the silicone implants enabled with the sustained release of montelukast, a CysLT receptor antagonist, for 3 and 15 days. In this work, we inserted each of the distinct implants into the pocket of the subpanniculus carnosus plane of living rats and performed histological and immunofluorescent (IF) analyses of the tissues biopsied at predetermined periods for 12 weeks after implant insertion. The implants with montelukast exhibited significantly reduced polymorphonuclear leukocytes (i.e., PMNs), implying a concurrent reduction of CysLT. This effect was more prominent after long-term local montelukast exposure. Thus, fewer fibroblasts were recruited, thereby reducing transforming growth factor (TGF)-I3 and myofibroblasts in the tissue around the implant. Therefore, the fibrotic capsule formation, which was assessed using the capsule thickness and collagen density, decreased along with the myofibroblasts. Additionally, the tissue biopsied at the experimental end point exhibited significantly decreased mechanical stiffness. Statement of Significance Capsular contracture is troublesome, making the tissues hardened around the silicone implant. This causes serious pain and discomfort to the patients, often leading to secondary surgery for implant replacement. To resolve this, we suggest a strategy of long-term, local suppression of cysteinyl leukotriene, an important mediator present during inflammation. For this, we propose a silicone implant abled to release a drug, montelukast, in a sustained manner. We tested our drug -release implant in living animals, which exhibited a significant decrease in capsule formation compared with the intact silicone implant. Ballistocardiogram (BCG), which displays the mechanical activity of heart, has been a subject of interest for several years due to its advantages in taking unobtrusive physiological measurements. In the field of sleep science, researchers actively study sleep architecture and clinically apply various sleep-related conditions through BCG-derived biological information such as the heartbeat, respiration and body movements of subjects. However, most of these studies have involved only adults. This area of research may be even more important with babies to monitor their biological signals without confinement. For this reason, we developed a physiological signal monitoring bed for baby by using a load cell. Heartbeat and respiration information was assessed with average respective performance errors of 1.53% and 2.53% compared to commercial equipment. The results showed the possibility of applying BCG technology to baby. Therefore, we expect that BCG-derived signals can be extensively applied to analyze sleep architecture and clinical applications in baby as they are with adults.
