An alternative approach for fabricating a protein array at nanoscale (<100 nm) is suggested with a capability of characterization and/or localization of multiple components on a nanoarray. Basically, fluorescent micro- and nanospheres each conjugated with different proteins are size-dependently self-assembled (SDSA) onto these nanometer wells that were created on the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) substrate by electron beam lithography (EBL). Particles of different diameters are added serially, and electrostatically attached to the corresponding wells through electrostatic attraction between the carboxylic groups of the spheres and p-doped silicon substrate underneath the PMMA layer. Target detection utilizes fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from fluorescent beads to target (mouse immunoglobulin G = mIgG or Octamer-4 = Oct4) and its antibody bound on the beads. The 180 nm blue beads are conjugated with mIgG to capture anti-mIgG-FITC. The 50 nm green and 100 nm yellow-green beads are conjugated with anti-Oct4 to capture Oct4 peptides; where the secondary anti-Oct4 tagged with phycoerythrin via F(ab)2 fragment is then added to function as an indicator of Oct4 detection. These protein-conjugated particles are added serially from the largest to the smallest and the particles are successfully self-assembled to the respective nanometer wells to achieve size-dependent self-assembly. FRET signals are detected through fluorescence and confocal microscopes, and further confirmed by Fluorolog3 spectrofluorometer. Therefore, SDSA is a valuable approach for the fabrication of multiple components array; and FRET is a useful biorecognition technique for the detection of mIgG, Oct4 or other targets of interest.

The output states of polarization (SOP's) were investigated within the bandwidth of a filter channel (0.8 nm) for a variety of optical fiber comb filters based on polarization-diversity loop structure including a zerothorder comb filter, first-order Lyot-type and Solc-type comb filters, and a second-order Solc-type comb filter. The output SOP's (SOPout's) of the filters were calculated at a flat-top band operation mode of each filter for four different input SOP's (SOPin's) except for the zeroth-order filter. It was found that the SOPout of each filter had unique dependence on wavelength. Specifically, the SOPout's of first-order and second-order comb filters vary periodically with spectral periods of a channel bandwidth (0.8 nm) and its half (0.4 nm), respectively. If an output linear polarizer is located at the output port of each filter, the specific portion of transmission spectra can be passed or rejected, and the rejected band can be continuously tuned in a limited wavelength range by controlling the SOPin. Moreover, the SOPin can be figured out by analyzing the location of the spectral dip at the output transmission spectra obtained above by using the output polarizer. © Copyright 2016 by SCITEPRESS-Science and Technology Publications, Lda. Studies the accessible depth by photons within biological tissue for photodynamic therapy of cancer. For measurements of light propagation within tissue, we applied a diode laser of 660 nm wavelength and by assuming the medium to be homogeneous, we neglect the effects of any refractive index mismatches between the tissue layers. The result have yielded the penetration depth of light within biological tissue.

Biometrics based on electromyogram (EMG) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) signals has received significant attention due to its resistance to forgery and tampering, as well as its relatively higher convenience and security compared to other biometric modalities. However, most EMG and IMU signal-based authentication methods require explicit authentication using unnatural gestures, which is not userfriendly. To address this, we collected EMG and IMU data during virtual reality (VR) rhythm game play, which does not require explicit gestures, and performed implicit authentication. Using a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier, we achieved classification accuracies of 91.71% for human identification and 87.91% for human authentication. The result demonstrated the feasibility of a seamless and implicit authentication in VR environments. © 2024 IEEE.

The mitochondrial genome sequence ofMinous monodactylus(16,459 bp) was determined by the MiSeq platform for the first time in the genusMinous. It encoded the 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and two ribosomal RNAs) and two conserved noncoding regions; control region (D-loop) and the origin of light strand (OL). Twenty-eight genes were encoded on the heavy (H) strand, while eight tRNAs andND6genes were on the light (L) strand. According to the phylogenetic analysis with other complete mitogenomes from order Scorpaeniformes,M. monodactyluswas clustered withSynanceia verrucosaas familySynanceiidaewith 81% sequence identity.

The complete mitochondrial genome ofTrematomus pennelliiwas determined by MiSeq platform. The mitogenome ofT. pennelliiwas 15,976 bp in length and encoded 37 genes (13 proteins, 22 tRNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs) and a non-coding control region (D-Loop). Overall A + T contents (54.10%) in the mitogenome was higher than G + C contents (45.90%). Twenty-nine genes were located on H strand, whereas eight genes were identified on L strand. Among 13 protein-coding genes, unusual start codons were identified inCOX1(GTG),ND6(ATT),COX2(ATC), andATP6(ATC). The incomplete stop codon (T–) was identified in six genes includingCOXII,COXIII,NAD2,NAD3,NAD4, andCytb. The phylogenetic tree of complete genome indicated thatTrematomus pennelliiwas most closely related toTrematomus bernacchiiwith 91.65% DNA sequence identity.

Wireless networked multi-site triaxial accelerometry system was proposed to estimate activity energy expenditure during daily life. Proposed system used different estimation algorithms according to activity classification based on measured acceleration signals. The estimation results showed higher correlation (R{sup}2=0.98) and smaller standard errors of estimation (SEE=0.66 kcal) than any other system in preceding reports.
