Regulating stem cell microenvironment is one of the essential elements in stem cell culture. Recently, carbon nanotube (CNT) has come into the spotlight as a biomaterial that retains unique properties. Based on its high chemical stability, elasticity, mechanical strength, and electrical conductivity, CNT shows great potential as an application for biomedical substrate. Also, properties of CNT could be further regulated by appropriate chemical modifications of CNT. Recent studies reported that modulating the cellular microenvironment through the use of CNT and chemically modified CNT as cell culture substrates can affect proliferation and differentiation of various types of stem cells. This review summarizes the unique biological effects of CNT on stem cells. © 2015 Lee et al.

A genomic database of all Earth’s eukaryotic species could contribute to many scientific discoveries;however, only a tiny fraction of species have genomic information available. In 2018, scientists across the world united under the Earth BioGenome Project (EBP), aiming to produce a database of highquality reference genomes containing all ~1.5 million recognized eukaryotic species. As the European node of the EBP, the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) sought to implement a new decentralised, equitable and inclusive model for producing reference genomes. For this, ERGA launched a Pilot Project establishing the first distributed reference genome production infrastructure and testing it on 98 eukaryotic species from 33 European countries. Here we outline the infrastructure and explore its effectiveness for scaling high-quality reference genome production, whilst considering equity and inclusion. The outcomes and lessons learned provide a solid foundation for ERGA while offering key learnings to other transnational, national genomic resource projects and the EBP. © The Author(s) 2024, corrected publication 2024.

In this paper, we propose an automatized Endoscopic Camera Manipulator (ECM) system for da Vinci surgical robot system to relieve surgeon's load in surgery. We also perform a simulation of the ECM motion planning as a basic step for automatized ECM system. We can obtain the motion trajectories of the ECM that make end effector of the ECM to reach a desired target position. We consider the ECM as a four-joint robot arm system and use the RRT (Rapidly-Exploring Random Tree) planning algorithm for this high order joint system. The simulation works properly and it will be helpful in proceeding further research. © 2015 Institute of Control, Robotics and Systems - ICROS.

Summary Background Across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), one in ten deaths in children younger than 5 years is attributable to diarrhoea. The substantial between-country variation in both diarrhoea incidence and mortality is attributable to interventions that protect children, prevent infection, and treat disease. Identifying subnational regions with the highest burden and mapping associated risk factors can aid in reducing preventable childhood *** We used Bayesian model-based geostatistics and a geolocated dataset comprising 15 072 746 children younger than 5 years from 466 surveys in 94 LMICs, in combination with findings of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, to estimate posterior distributions of diarrhoea prevalence, incidence, and mortality from 2000 to 2017. From these data, we estimated the burden of diarrhoea at varying subnational levels (termed units) by spatially aggregating draws, and we investigated the drivers of subnational patterns by creating aggregated risk factor *** The greatest declines in diarrhoeal mortality were seen in south and southeast Asia and South America, where 54·0% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 38·1-65·8), 17·4% (7·7-28·4), and 59·5% (34·2-86·9) of units, respectively, recorded decreases in deaths from diarrhoea greater than 10%. Although children in much of Africa remain at high risk of death due to diarrhoea, regions with the most deaths were outside Africa, with the highest mortality units located in Pakistan. Indonesia showed the greatest within-country geographical inequality; some regions had mortality rates nearly four times the average country rate. Reductions in mortality were correlated to improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) or reductions in child growth failure (CGF). The characteristics of gaseous laminar free-jet flow have been investigated experimentally by applying AC electric fields with a single electrode configuration. The jet flows were affected significantly by AC electric fields particularly at high voltages for applied frequencies less than 120 Hz, while those were not responded to further increased frequencies. It was shown that the limit frequency (120 Hz) could be associated with the collision frequency. For the frequencies less than 120 Hz, the laminar gaseous fuel stem was broken down at an axial distance and subsequently separated into three parts. The velocity fields in jet flows interacting with applied electric fields were compared with those without having electric fields. The results also showed that such breakdown heights with nozzle exit velocities decreased monotonously for all gaseous fluids used. The spread angle of fuel stem increased and then decreased with applied frequency after showing a maximum around 43Hz. Interaction of applying electric fields with laminar free jet flow was discussed in detail, and the possible mechanism was also explained.

A system-level framework of complex microbe-microbe and host-microbe chemical cross-talk would help elucidate the role of our gut microbiota in health and disease. Here we report a literature-curated interspecies network of the human gut microbiota, called NJS16. This is an extensive data resource composed of ~570 microbial species and 3 human cell types metabolically interacting through >4,400 small-molecule transport and macromolecule degradation events. Based on the contents of our network, we develop a mathematical approach to elucidate representative microbial and metabolic features of the gut microbial community in a given population, such as a disease cohort. Applying this strategy to microbiome data from type 2 diabetes patients reveals a context-specific infrastructure of the gut microbial ecosystem, core microbial entities with large metabolic influence, and frequently-produced metabolic compounds that might indicate relevant community metabolic processes. We have developed the smart shoes which can analyze the gait type of people. There are 3 gait types, that is, normal gait, in-toeing gait, and out-toeing gait. The 3 strain sensors to evaluate human gait were installed in midsole of the shoes. The smart shoes can make a correct the disorder of gait and our posture. And it also counted the number of steps we take, and measured calorie burning during walking. It helps to control the weight for healthful life by knowing the amount of exercise. This study aims to compare the spatial characteristics of the cavitation bubble cloud and shockwave pressure field. Cavitation bubble cloud images were acquired using micro pulsed light with 150us exposure time and CCD camera, and images were accumulated after repeated several acquisitions. The shockwave field was measured using an optical hydrophone to compare with the distribution of cavitation bubbles. After the shockwave device was triggered, cavitation bubbles were generated and visualized during 150us light exposure and were collapsed at the same position where they were generated. Most of the bubbles are concentrated in the focal region of the shockwave. The largest bubbles were observed at the peak negative pressure position in the focal area In the remaining focal area, it was formed as relatively small bubbles. Outside the focal area, very small bubbles were sparsely observed. Cavitation bubbles produced by a single shockwave pulse are highly correlated with the shockwave pressure at exposed location since there is no significant positional movement with time. Therefore, the distribution of cavitation bubble is similar to the spatial characteristics of the shockwave pressure field. It is possible to qualitatively analyze the shockwave pressure field by observing the cavitation bubbles which is difficult to measure.
