Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been extensively applied to detect complex analytes due to its ability to enhance the fingerprint signals of molecules around nanostructured metallic surfaces. Thus, it is essential to design SERS-active nanostructures with abundant electromagnetic hotspots in a probed volume according to the dimensions of the analytes, as the analytes must be located in their hotspots for maximum signal enhancement. Herein, we demonstrate a simple method for detecting robust SERS signals from multi-scaled bioanalytes, regardless of their dimensions in the liquid state, through a photothermally driven co-assembly with colloidal plasmonic nanoparticles as signal enhancers. Under resonant light illumination, plasmonic nanoparticles and analytes in the solution quickly assemble at the focused surface area by convective movements induced by the photothermal heating of the plasmonic nanoparticles without any surface modification. Such collective assemblies of plasmonic nanoparticles and analytes were optimized by varying the optical density and surface charge of the nanoparticles, the viscosity of the solvent, and the light illumination time to maximize the SERS signals. Using these light-induced co-assemblies, the intrinsic SERS signals of small biomolecules can be detected down to nanomolar concentrations based on their fingerprint spectra. Furthermore, large-sized biomarkers, such as viruses and exosomes, were successfully detected without labels, and the complexity of the collected spectra was statistically analyzed using t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding combined with support vector machine (t-SNE+SVM). The proposed method is expected to provide a robust and convenient method to sensitively detect biologically and environmentally relevant analytes at multiple scales in liquid samples. © 2024, The Authors. Palladium is the most prominent material in both scientific and industrial research on gas storage,purification,detection,and catalysis due to its unique properties as a catalyst and hydrogen *** the dynamic optical phenomena of palladium reacting with hydrogen,transduction of the gas-matter reaction into light-matter interaction is attempted to visualize the dynamic surface chemistry and reaction *** simple geometry of the metal-dielectric-metal structure,Fabry-Perot etalon,is employed for a colorimetric reactor,to display the catalytic reaction of the exposed gas via water-film/bubble formation at the dielectric/palladium *** adsorption/desorption behavior and catalytic reaction of hydrogen and oxygen on the palladium surface display highly repeatable and dramatic color changes based on two distinct water formation trends:the foggy effect by water bubbles and the whiteout effect by water film *** and experiments demonstrate the robustness of the proposed Fabry-Perot etalon as an excellent platform for monitoring the opto-physical phenomena driven by heterogeneous catalysis.

SARS-CoV-2 variants could induce immune escape by mutations on the receptor-binding domain (RBD) and N-terminal domain(NTD).Here we report the humoral immune response to circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants,such as 501Y.V2 (B.1.351),of the plasma and neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) elicited by CoronaVac (inactivated vaccine),ZF2001 (RBD-subunit vaccine) and natural *** 86 potent NAbs identified by high-throughput single-cell VDJ sequencing of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from vaccinees and convalescents,near half anti-RBD NAbs showed major neutralization reductions against the K417N/E484K/N501Y mutation combination,with E484K being the dominant ***3-53/VH3-66 recurrent antibodies respond differently to RBD variants,and K417N compromises the majority of neutralizing activity through reduced polar contacts with complementarity determining *** contrast,the 242-244 deletion (242-244A) would abolish most neutralization activity of anti-NTD NAbs by interrupting the conformation of NTD antigenic supersite,indicating a much less diversity of anti-NTD NAbs than anti-RBD *** of convalescents and CoronaVac vaccinees displayed comparable neutralization reductions against pseudo-and authentic 501Y.V2 variants,mainly caused by E484K/N501Y and 242-244△,with the effects being ***,RBD-subunit vaccinees exhibit markedly higher tolerance to 501Y.V2 than convalescents,since the elicited anti-RBD NAbs display a high diversity and are unaffected by NTD ***,an extended gap between the third and second doses of ZF2001 leads to better neutralizing activity and tolerance to 501Y.V2 than the standard three-dose ***,these results suggest that the deployment of RBD-vaccines,through a third-dose boost,may be ideal for combating SARS-CoV-2 variants when necessary,especially for those carrying mutations that disrupt the NTD supersite.

Study Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent arrhythmia and is associated with a fivefold increase in stroke risk. Many individuals with AF go undetected and thus untreated. These individuals are often asymptomatic or have paroxysmal AF. There are ongoing debates on whether mass screening for AF in the general population is to be recommended. However, there is incentive in performing systematic screening for specific at risk groups such as individuals suspected of sleep-disordered breathing where an important association between AF and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been demonstrated. In this research we introduce a new methodology leveraging digital biomarkers and recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) for the purpose of mass AF diagnosis from hours of single channel electrocardiogram (ECG) recording. We demonstrate the value of such methodology in a large population sample at risk of sleep disordered ***: Four databases, totaling n=3,088 patients and p=26,913 hours of continuous single channel electrocardiogram raw data were used. Three of the databases (n=125, p=2,513) were used for training a machine learning model in recognizing AF events from beat-to-beat interval time series. The visit 1 of the sleep heart health study database (SHHS1, n=2,963, p=24,400) consists of overnight polysomnographic (PSG) recordings, and was considered as the test set to evaluate the feasibility of identifying prominent AF rhythm from PSG recordings. In SHHS1, expert inspection identified a total of 70 patients with a prominent AF ***: Model prediction on the SHHS1 showed an overall Se = 0.97, Sp = 0.99, NPV = 0.99, PPV = 0.67 in classifying individuals with or without prominent AF. This paper focuses on the derivation and simulation of mathematical models describing new plasma fraction in blood for patients undergoing simultaneous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and therapeutic plasma exchange. Models for plasma exchange with either veno–arterial or veno–venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation are considered. Two classes of models are derived for each case, one in the form of an algebraic delay equation and another in the form of a system of delay differential equations. In special cases, our models reduce to single compartment ones for plasma exchange that have been validated with experimental data [15]. We also show that the algebraic delay equations are forward Euler discretizations of the delay differential equations, with timesteps equal to transit times through model compartments. Numerical simulations are performed to compare different model types, to investigate the impact of plasma device port switching on the efficiency of the exchange process, and to study the sensitivity of the models to their parameters. The assessment of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is important for training as well as CPR related research to validate new method or to confirm efficacy of existing one. Infant CPR, in particular, has been received great attention due to its controversy over appropriateness of or superiority between two different methods, two-finger (TF) and two-thumb (TT) CPR, suggested by the resuscitation council. Accordingly, the development of assessment tool that is capable of reliably investigating different CPR techniques has become critical. One of the most challenging task in the infant CPR is to provide consistent and accurate finger placement throughout the performance. Here, we suggest a new method to measure accuracy of the finger placement for both TF and TT CPR using manikin-integrated digital measuring system developed in the previous study. Center of forces of force sensitive resistance sensors used for assessing different finger placements were measured in each compression and scattered on 2D plane to quantitatively and qualitatively probe the finger position. The appearance of the scattered data turned out to be significantly different depending on the performance capability. In the comparison between beginners and experts, stdY and meanDist were significant parameters differentiating these two groups for both techniques, meaning beginners are poor at providing consistent forces along y direction and targeting a specific region while relatively good at balancing in x direction.

In this study, we aim to address the challenges of micro-hydropower generation in low-head environments. The authors reviewed and assessed various factors affecting the feasibility of micro-hydro systems, such as geographical constraints, construction costs, and grid connectivity. To overcome the limitations of conventional hydro turbines in such conditions, the authors proposed a novel cross-flow turbine. Initially, they designed and analyzed an inverted cross-flow turbine based on design rules established by previous researchers and performed numerical analyses. Four steps parametric studies were conducted to achieved optimum turbine values, such as runner diameter ratio and the number of blades, considering the maximum efficiency point from the previous step. The best efficiency point of the optimized design turbine was 72.92 % at a runner rotational speed of 170 RPM with a 0.75 runner diameter ratio and 35 blades. To validate the optimized design, the authors compared it with the initial design using hill charts and numerical values obtained from parametric studies. Overall, this research demonstrates the usefulness of computational fluid dynamics simulations and parametric studies in optimizing the design of an inverted cross-flow turbine under low head conditions. © 2023, The Authors. Polar transform network for prostate ultrasound segmentation with uncertainty estimation

Automatic and accurate prostate ultrasound segmentation is a long-standing and challenging problem due to the severe noise and ambiguous/missing prostate boundaries. In this work, we propose a novel polar transform network (PTN) to handle this problem from a fundamentally new perspective, where the prostate is represented and segmented in the polar coordinate space rather than the original image grid space. This new representation gives a prostate volume, especially the most challenging apex and base sub-areas, much denser samples than the background and thus facilitate the learning of discriminative features for accurate prostate segmentation. Moreover, in the polar representation, the prostate surface can be efficiently parameterized using a 2D surface radius map with respect to a centroid coordinate, which allows the proposed PTN to obtain superior accuracy compared with its counterparts using convolutional neural networks while having significantly fewer (18%∼41%) trainable parameters. We also equip our PTN with a novel strategy of centroid perturbed test-time augmentation (CPTTA), which is designed to further improve the segmentation accuracy and quantitatively assess the model uncertainty at the same time. The uncertainty estimation function provides valuable feedback to clinicians when manual modifications or approvals are required for the segmentation, substantially improving the clinical significance of our work. We conduct a three-fold cross validation on a clinical dataset consisting of 315 transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results show that our proposed PTN with CPTTA outperforms the state-of-the-art methods with statistical significance on most of the metrics while exhibiting a much smaller model size. Rare earth elements (REEs) are exploited for global use in manufacturing. Such activities result in their release into the environment and the transformation into more stable phosphate deposition. The objective of this study was to evaluate molecular and behavioral changes of zebrafish exposed to the synthesized terbium phosphate (TbPO4) at concentrations of 10, 20, and 50 mg/L and to determine its potential for neurotoxicity. Metabolomics related to neurotransmitters, and assessment of transcripts and proteins were conducted to uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying TbPO4 with emphasis on neurotransmitter systems. Exposure to 20 mg/L TbPO4 induced larval hyperactivity and perturbed the cholinergic system in zebrafish. Based on metabolomics related to neurotransmitters, dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT), and many of their precursors and metabolites were decreased in abundance by TbPO4. In addition, the expression levels of transcripts related to the synthesis, transport, receptor binding, and metabolism of DA and 5-HT were analyzed at the mRNA and protein levels. Transcript and protein levels for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme for DA synthesis, were down-regulated in larval fish. Monoamine oxidase (MAO), an enzyme that catabolizes monoamines DA and 5-HT, was also reduced in mRNA abundance. We hypothesize that DA synthesis and monoamine metabolism are associated with behavioral alterations. This study elucidates putative mechanisms and exposure risks to wildlife and humans by characterizing phosphatic REE-induced neurotoxicity in developing zebrafish. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd
