Stochasticity in gene expression, protein or metabolite levels contributes to cell-cell variations. The analysis of these variations could lead to a better understanding of cellular processes and drug responses, but require single cell analysis techniques. To this end, we developed a new microfluidic platform for high-throughput capture (in about a minute) with low shear and imaging of thousands of single cells. This platform is compatible with upstream components for complex cell stimulation patterns. Imaging of calcium dynamics in response to oxidative stress with this platform reveals variable phenotypic responses within clonal populations.

We evaluated the performance of a bed-type sensor system using the air-mattress with balancing tube (AMBT) method to noninvasively monitor the signals of heartbeat, respiration, and events of snoring, sleep apnea and body movement of subject on the system. The proposed system consists of multiple cylindrical air cells, two sensor cells and 18 support cells, and the small physiological signals were measured by the changes in pressure difference between the sensor cells, and the dc component was removed by balancing tube that is connecting the sensor cells. Using newly developed AMBT method, heartbeat, respiration, snoring, and body movement signals were clearly measured. For the concept of a home healthcare system, two automatic processing algorithms were developed: one is to estimate the mean heart and respiration rates for every 30 s, and another one is to detect the snoring, sleep apnea, and body movement events from the measured signals. Many research teams have studied to make the blind see by stimulating the retina cells using electrical devices. But due to the limited number of electrodes, it needs to complement low resolution with image processing. In this paper, we tried to find the effect of image processing, especially with contrast enhancement (CE) technique. We investigated face recognition performance with three different resolutions (8×8, 12×12, 16×16). Especially test images used here were facial images of subjects' familiar colleagues. Also we compared the performances with those of edge detection(ED) technique in 16×16 resolution. The results showed significant higher accuracy of face recognition with 8×8 resolution when using CE technique. Moreover accuracy with CE was much higher than that with ED.

Indirect-contact photoplethysmography is a new approach to measure photoplethysmogrm over clothing for unconstrained and unconscious monitoring purpose. In this paper, the effect of sensor configurations on indirect-contact photoplehysmography was investigated. Sensor configuration was classified into two groups. One was multiple light sources with centered photo-detector configuration and the other was multiple photo-detectors with centered light source configuration. Total 8 kinds of sensors were tested. Experimental results showed that although both sensor groups have possibility to photoplethysmogram measurement over clothing, sensors with multiple light sources showed better performance when thick clothes were considered. Sensor configuration should be selected with regard to its application considerations such as power consumption or target subjects.

To evaluate sleep quality or autonomic nervous system, many annoying electrodes have be attached to subjects' body. It can disturb comfortable sleep and, moreover, since it is very expensive experiment, continuous sleep monitoring is difficult. Since heart rate reflects the autonomic nervous system, it is highly synchronized with the sympathetic activation during transition from non-REM sleep to wakefulness. When the transition occurred the heart rate abruptly increased clearly distinguished with other changes. By using this physiology, we tried to classify the wakefulness during the whole night sleep. Our final goal is adopting this method to the continuous monitoring in our daily life. electrocardiogram (ECG) is not the suitable. Subjects have to attach the electrodes by themselves in their housing to obtain ECG. In that point of view, we used the ballistocardiogram (BCG) that is the representative method to obtain heart beat nonintrusively. For ten normal subjects, the wakefulness classifications by using the heart rate dynamics were executed. Nine subjects showed substantial agreement with the visually-scored method, polysomnography (PSG), and only one subject showed moderate agreement in Cohen's kappa value.
