The ECG recording in the bathtub was studied using insulated electrode. Prior studies of the ECG recording in the bathtub used conductive electrodes having some problems such as the possibility of the electric shock and sensitivity to contamination of the electrode surfaces. The insulated electrodes were made of copper plate coated with PET film. The electrodes were attached on bathtub at both sides of the chest High-input-impedance amplifier was designed to amplify ECG signal sensed by insulated electrodes of high impedance. The recorded signals in this study were noisier than those recorded with conventional conductive electrodes. But the R peaks in the recorded signals were large enough to be auto-detected. Further study will improve SNR by reducing of power line noise and common-mode noise.

The studies of ECG measurement on the toilet seat have been performed specifically for the ubiquitous health care. Instead of the mainly used dry electrodes having several problems such as the electrical safety or the environmental stability, we used the capacitively-coupled insulated electrodes, which were composed of the Cu plate and the PTFE film for the measurement. The bio-signal sensed with the insulated electrodes was measured through the ultra-high input impedance system including OPA111 having the common mode impedance of 1014 Ω. As the result of measuring the signal, with the electrical ground on the neck or the hand, the R-peaks were detected very positively. However, without the electrical ground on the body, we could detect the heartbeat signal, a kind of the motion artifacts by the variation of the blood vessel volume. It seems that this heartbeat signal can be also used as the important parameter like the R-peaks for the HRV (heart rate variability) analysis. In addition, it is thought that, without the directly electrical ground, the R-peak detection will be possible by the improvement of the SNR with the active common canceling system.

In this paper, we use PRAAT program for the analysis of voice data and compare the result of PRAAT with the result of CSL. In current state-of-the-art resorbable orthopedic implant materials, loss of strength occurs before substantial mass loss in the degradation process. Materials such as 1:1 PLA:PGA copolymers become too weak to carry any load long before significant amounts of bone have grown to replace the eroded prostheses. An alternative is a two-stage implant material that is both load bearing and osteoconductive;a property of a material to encourage bone already being formed, to lie closely to or adhere to its surface. To achieve this, an interpenetrating network of osteoconductive material and strong (but degradable) biocompatible material is needed. In comparison to conventional prosthesis or scaffold manufacturing routes, rapid prototyping (RP) techniques are an attractive means of fabricating these two-stage implants. A poly butylene terephthalate polymer blend scaffold with 150-300 urn diameter interconnected pores was built using RP and coated with a thin coating of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) or hydroxy apatite suspension in a polycaprolactone matrix. Tissue culture results showed that scaffolds with such thin coatings were more conducive to growth of the cells, perhaps due to a more open scaffold, where the cells can proliferate more easily compared to the other types. The interpenetrating combination of the two biodegradable materials was designed to allow rapid bone in-growth while providing support. This preliminary study validates our hypothesis that the RP process combined with thin coating of HA can tailor an implant to the needs of a specific patient.

A cyclic variation of blood echogenicity from human iliac arteries in vivo was first observed using an intravascular 30 MHz ultrasound imaging device. Several studies have confirmed the temporal variation of the backscattered power during a flow cycle but they were all from in vitro experiments. In this paper, cyclic variation of echogenicity in vivo on human carotid arteries (7 males and 3 females) was observed from harmonic images of a GE LOGIQ 700 expert system with an M12L probe. Blood echogenicity increased at early systole, reaching a maximum at peak systole, and then decreased to be weak during diastole. Echogenicity during systole was about 40 to 60 % higher than that during diastole for all radial positions. The ratio of the maximum echogenicity during systole to the mean echogenicity during diastole was small at the center and near the vessel wall, and became large between them. The cyclic variation of blood echogenicity is thought to be due to erythrocyte aggregation enhancement by the combined effects of flow acceleration and shear rate during systole.
