Wireless networked multisite triaxial accelerometry system was proposed to estimate activity energy expenditure during daily life. Proposed system used different estimation algorithms according to activity classification based on measured acceleration signals. The estimation results showed higher correlation (R2 = 0.98) and smaller standard errors of estimation (SEE = 0.66 kcal) than any other system in preceding reports. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper presents an integrated microfluidic device for the generation of poly (lactideco- glycolide) (PLGA) nanospheres with protein coating. The chip utilizes the microfluidic droplet reactor technique [1] and PLGA salting-out [2] approach to provide high consistency and efficiency. The size of generated PLGA nanospheres was in the 300nm range;and the coating amount is 1 μg of bovine serum albumin (BSA) per 1mg PLGA nanospheres. Compared to conventional methods, the microfluidic generation of nanospheres reported here has the advantages of continuous synthesis process, tuneable process condition, and small droplet/particle dispersion. Objective. Studies of the neuropathological effects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) on the underlying motor system have investigated abnormalities in the magnitude and timing of the event-related desynchronization (ERD) and synchronization (ERS) during motor execution (ME). However, the spatio-spectral-temporal dynamics of these sensorimotor oscillations during motor imagery (MI) have not been fully explored for these patients. This study explores the neural dynamics of sensorimotor oscillations for ALS patients during MI by quantifying ERD/ERS features in frequency, time, and space. Approach. Electroencephalogram (EEG) data were recorded from six patients with ALS and 11 age-matched healthy controls (HC) while performing a MI task. ERD/ERS features were extracted using wavelet-based time-frequency analysis and compared between the two groups to quantify the abnormal neural dynamics of ALS in terms of both time and frequency. Topographic correlation analysis was conducted to compare the localization of MI activity between groups and to identify subject-specific frequencies in the µ and β frequency bands. Main results. Overall, reduced and delayed ERD was observed for ALS patients, particularly during right-hand MI. ERD features were also correlated with ALS clinical scores, specifically disease duration, bulbar, and cognitive functions. Significance. The analyses in this study quantify abnormalities in the magnitude and timing of sensorimotor oscillations for ALS patients during MI tasks. Our findings reveal notable differences between MI and existing results on ME in ALS. The observed alterations are speculated to reflect disruptions in the underlying cortical networks involved in MI functions. Quantifying the neural dynamics of MI plays an important role in the study of EEG-based cortical markers for ALS. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The cyclic variation in echogenicity (CVE) was observed from the cross-sectional images of the common carotid artery using coded harmonic imaging of a GE ultrasound system. The objective of this research is to study the smoking acute effects on the amplitude of the CVE (A_(cve)). A_(cve) was analyzed among the 28 smokers before and after 1-2 cigarettes were smoked. The smokers were optimally divided into two clusters with respect to the change in A_(cve) and the intrinsic characteristics of smokers (i.e., daily consumed cigarettes and smoking years) through a two-step cluster analysis (TSCA). The relative change of A_(cve) after smoking was significantly higher in the heavy smoker cluster compared with the light smoker cluster. However, there is no significant difference in the absolute value of A_(cve) between before and after smoking for both two clusters. The effect of tissue attenuation on A_(cve) was compensated with body mass index (BMI). The compensated parameter, A'_(cve), is significantly increased in heavy smoker group after smoking (BS: 0.47+-7.4;AS: 5.4+-8.0;p<0.05). It is in agreement with the analytical result of (DELTA)A_(cve). Furthermore, after smoking, A'_(cve) is significant higher in heavy smoker group (5.4+-8.0), compared with light smoker group (-1.3+-6.7;p<0.05). It suggests that the compensation of A_(cve) is help to reduce the interference from tissue attenuation and is good for the comparison among individuals.

programs for the analysis of pathological voice data have been presented for the last few decades. Computerized Speech Lab (CSL) has been recognized as a standard in the field of pathological voice analysis. PRAAT is a new open program which is constantly being improved almost every week. CSL gives the "Voice disorders database" which was produced by Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. In this paper, we use PRAAT program for the analysis of voice data and compare the result of PRAAT with the result of CSL. We focus on the perturbation analysis on frequencies using several parameters like jitter, standard deviation of fundamental frequencies etc.

In male reproducible health and fertility and IVF (in-vitro fertilization), morphological analysis of sperm has been most important. But the traditional tools for semen analysis are subjective, imprecise, inaccurate, difficult to standardize, and reproduce mainly due to their manually oriented operations. The purpose of morphological analysis of sperm is to microscopically type-classify sperm according to their morphological characteristics of heads. Until now, the strict criteria method has long been used in clinic to discriminate normal sperm from abnormal. This method cannot classify the diverse groups of abnormal sperm in detail and shows large variations in inter-operators and intra-operator. In this paper, we have studied a new method of sperm morphological classification using artificial neural networks that are widely used in pattern recognition and image processing. With a multi-layer perceptron trained by the error back-propagation algorithm, profile features from digitized sperm images were classified into four classes that consisted of one normal group and three abnormal groups according to their morphological characteristics. © 1998 IMIA. Objective: Laryngeal hypersensitivity (LHS) is a state of heightened sensorimotor response to stimuli in the upper airway. Although its clinical picture is becoming progressively clearer with recent research progress, specificities about its associated factors and processes remain to be clarified. The aim of this integrative review was to synthesize published empirical data from human studies on LHS, focusing on related factors and pathophysiology. Study Design and Data Sources: Integrative review of the literature;Pubmed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. Methods: Keywords associated with the following three main concepts were used to query databases: (1) manifestations potentially associated with an irritable larynx (dysphonia, inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO), chronic cough, and globus);(2) hypersensitivity;and (3) pathophysiology. Peer-reviewed studies in English providing empirical original research data on the pathophysiology of LHS were included, with no restriction based on study design. Results: In total, 54 papers met the inclusion criteria. Factors potentially associated with LHS were identified, namely (1) psychological and lifestyle factors, (2) upper airway inflammation and injuries from exogenous/endogenous irritants, infections, or mucosal atrophy, (3) sex hormones, (4) metabolic abnormalities, and (5) aberrant respiratory behavior. Given the parallels between pain-related mechanisms and suggested LHS mechanisms, processes identified as putatively contributing to LHS were categorized in light of the current pain literature. Findings suggest that LHS may stem from a peripheral tissue insult, a neuropathic insult, and/or maladaptive neuroplasticity. Gaps in the literature were identified, in part driven by an uneven repartition of research across the various alleged manifestations of LHS. Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and HRV parameters are extracted from electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. However, the conventional ECG electrodes such as Ag/AgCl electrode make a person uncomfortable due to electrolytic paste or conductive adhesive used for ensuring good contact between electrode and skin. In this study, the portable device with capacitive electrodes was designed to monitor ANS activity through clothes. By using capacitive electrodes, ECG can be measured without direct skin-contact through capacitive coupling between the body and the electrodes. To evaluate the possibility that the ANS activity can be monitored using the capacitive electrode system, HRV parameters extracted from the capacitive electrodes were compared with HRV parameters extracted from Ag/AgCl electrodes. Results showed that there was no significant difference between the HRV parameters of two different electrodes.

In nature,many living organisms exhibiting unique structural coloration and soft-bodied actuation have inspired scientists to develop advanced structural colored soft actuators toward biomimetic soft ***,it is challenging to simultaneously biomimic the angle-independent structural color and shape-morphing capabilities found in the plum-throated cotinga flying ***,we report biomimetic MXene-based soft actuators with angle-independent structural color that are fabricated through controlled self-assembly of colloidal SiO_(2) nanoparticles onto highly aligned MXene films followed by vacuum-assisted infiltration of polyvinylidene fluoride into the *** resulting soft actuators are found to exhibit brilliant,angle-independent structural color,as well as ultrafast actuation and recovery speeds(a maximum curvature of 0.52 mm−1 can be achieved within 1.16 s,and a recovery time of~0.24 s)in response to acetone *** proof-of-concept illustrations,structural colored soft actuators are applied to demonstrate a blue gripper-like bird’s claw that can capture the target,artificial green tendrils that can twine around tree branches,and an artificial multicolored butterfly that can flutter its wings upon cyclic exposure to acetone *** strategy is expected to offer new insights into the development of biomimetic multifunctional soft actuators for somatosensory soft robotics and next-generation intelligent machines.
