We developed a new analysis technique for the assessment of irregular vibratory movement of vocal folds. Successive frames of pre-recorded video images from videostroboscopy were transferred to computer memory and vibratory track of one selected point was described as a waveform by displaying the same lines of all frames along the vertical direction. Glottal area waveform, which was normalized with glottal length, was composed to quantitatively assess the overall vibratory pattern of vocal folds. By applying this technique, irregular vibratory patterns of multiple regions, such as asynchronized registration of glottal cycles, could be easily visualized It would be possible to monitor and analyze the pathologic changes of vocal fold movement by means of this newly developed system. © 1998 IMIA. We propose a new cold dialysate regeneration system that requires 10 L per treatment for home hemodialysis. In this system, by using cold dialysate and 2 activated carbon columns alternatively switched between adsorption and desorption. In animal experiments (n = 8, dogs) were conducted to validate the cold dialysate regeneration system. When it is used in a conventional hemodialysis, the urea reduction ration was 60.9 ± 6.3% and Kt/V was 1.0 ± 0.2. BUN concentration in the dialysate was 5.8 mg/dL and serum electrolytes remained stable. The proposed cold dialysate regeneration system using only a small volume of dialysate will be useful for home hemodialysis. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

It has been reported that sudden cardiac death and ventricular tachycardia can occur after treatment of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). It is likely that TOF has effect on the heart rate variability because of the ventricular arrhythmia. We evaluated how complex and periodic dynamics of heart rate occurred in the normal children (group A, n=13) and TOF children (group B, n=13) throughout 24 hours. We examined each ECG data on 24-hour Holter ECG segmented into 1-hour length. We analyzed each HR time series, and quantified the overall complexity of each HR time series by its correlation dimension. We also calculated the power spectrum of HR, and obtained low-frequency component (0.08-0.15 Hz) and high-frequency component (0.15-0.4 Hz). We compared the results between group A and B. Group B had lower correlation dimension (4.055/spl plusmn/0.4134 vs. 4.9310/spl plusmn/0.2054, p<0.05) than group A, even though there were no significant differences in the low-(0.9864/spl plusmn/0.5598 vs. 1.5560/spl plusmn/0.8325, p<0,05) and high-(1.1168/spl plusmn/0.1.1448 vs. 0.9271/spl plusmn/0.6528, p<0.05) frequency components. It can be concluded that HR time series of group B are more regular than those of group A, and that correlation dimension reveals a nonlinear characteristics of HR time series which is not determined in the frequency domain.

Due to the aging process, the aftereffect of an accident or the problems in brain, some people can experience difficulties in walking. It could be helpful in the treatment of these individuals suffering walking difficulties to monitor their movement. The unconstrained activity monitoring system (U-AMS) was developed to monitor the body's acceleration. It can be attached easily and doesn't interfere with daily activity. The hardware consists of 3-axis accelerometer, which records data for long periods of time. The movement image was simultaneously recorded by a camcorder. To collect data from U-AMS and analyze them, several programs were developed. The data were transferred to a computer by RS-232 module and displayed through viewing program made by MFC (Microsoft, USA). The analyzing program, which links viewing program to MATLAB (Mathworks, USA), analyzes the data to detect movement disorder. In this paper, freezing, which is characterized as start hesitation., was the target disorder. Using the different characteristics in frequency domain between freezing and normal gait, freezing appearances were detected. By comparing with movement image, the accuracy of the freezing detection was verified to have a good performance.

The importance of the video monitoring during polysomnographic recording is increasing, but the analog-taped storage method currently in use has difficulties in random access and synchronization with the polysomnographic data. To overcome these limits we need to develop the digitalized integration and synchronization method. The digitization of the moving image during sleep requires at least the quality of detecting the relatively fast movement. It also requires the minimal volume of data for the storage and communication. We analyzed the two standards of digital moving image compression to find the optimal storing format for the video image during sleep. Based on this analysis, we developed the integration method using the format H.261, which has better performance than MPEG-1 in low bit rate of 128 kbps. We also used the QCIF format in H.261 to increase the frame rate, and added the time index to H.261 format to support random access. We synchronized these video images with the polysomnographic data.

PR interval variability (PRV) has been proposed as a noninvasive tool for investigating the autonomic nervous system (ANS) as well as heart rate variability (HRV). The goal of this study is to determine whether PRV has nonlinear dynamics or not. The authors developed an automatic PR interval measurement algorithm, and tested it using MIT ECG databases. 24-hour Holter ECGs were acquired from 30 healthy adults. Surrogate data was generated from a simpler linear model to have similar statistical characteristics with the original data. To detect nonlinear dynamics of the time series, correlation dimension, Lyapunov exponent, and phase space reconstruction were evaluated in both data. The results showed that PRV was significantly different from the surrogate data in the tests. It was concluded that PR interval variability shows nonlinear behavior.

By calculating correlation factor between two signals from different sites using digitized images of beating ciliary cells, the direction of uniphase lines was defined and the metachronal wavelength was calculated along the direction perpendicular to this. From the correlation map showing spatially the phase difference between beating cilia, the direction of uniphase lines was determined by the principal axis method. The metachronal wavelength of 8 objects for TSA was in the range of 50-70 pixels, Under our measurement system, the mean wavelength of metachronal wave was found to be 6.24/spl plusmn/0.27[/spl mu/m].

We present the method of the elimination of ECG artifact from the polysomnographic EEG and EGG. The idea of this method is that the ECG-corrupted EEG segment can be detected from ECG R-wave and regarded as a missing segment. After this, we used two interpolations to recover the missing segment. One is the Lagrange polynomial interpolation and the other is the least square error AR interpolation. We also compared the AR-method with the LMS adaptive noise canceling method. Simulations show the AR-method performs better than other methods. To apply to the real EEG and EOG signals practically, we also developed the algorithm to detect whether the artifact level is high or not. If the artifact level is high, then the interpolations are applied.

Mechano-active scaffolds were fabricated from very elastic poly(L-lactide-co-Ε-carprolactone). The scaffolds with 80% porosity and 300-500 um pore size were prepared by a gel-pressing method. As a control group for elastic properties of polymer scaffolds, rigid poly L-lactide scaffolds were fabricated. The scaffolds were seeded with chondrocytes and cultured to evaluate the effect of elastic properties of polymer scaffolds for the differentiation and the ECM secretion of chondrocytes. Also, the chondrocytes-seeded constructs were implanted in nude mice subcutaneously to investigate their biocompatibility and cartilage formation. From the biochemical analyses, chondrogenic differentiation was sustained and enhanced significantly and chondral extracellular matrix was increased through mechanical stimulation of dynamic environment in the dynamic body systems. Histological analysis showed that implants of PLCL constructs formed mature and well-developed cartilaginous tissue, as evidenced by chondrocytes within lacunae. Consequently, the elastic PLCL scaffolds could be used to engineer cartilage in mechanically dynamic environments.

Mucociliary clearance of the respiratory tract is one of the important defensive functions of the airway mucous. In this study, the authors developed a new method of measuring ciliary beat frequency (CBF) with high spatial resolution based on the image processing method. Microscopic ciliary images were digitized through an image grabbing board inside a PC, and data necessary for the power spectrum (FFT) analyses were extracted from these gray images by an image subtraction method. By means of FFT analyses, the maximum peak frequencies were found in each divided block of a whole acquired image. Finally using these frequencies, the authors composed frequency maps of various sizes showing the spatial distribution of CBF's in user specified resolution. The smaller the authors made the size of divided blocks included in analysis, the more detailed regional ciliary beat distributions they could evaluate.
