The spatial distribution of PM10 and PM2.5 was observed at the e-waste dismantling community in Daengyai and Banpao subdistrict, Buriram, Thailand. High and low volume air samplers were used to collect PM10 and PM2.5 in the ambient air, respectively, at e-waste dismantling, non-e-waste dismantling, open dumpsite, and reference area. The sampling was performed during summer and rainy seasons of 2019 for 24 h and seven consecutive days. The average concentrations of PM10 were 49.64 ± 17.71, 55.36 ± 17.46 and 57.61 ± 17.55 µg/m3 at e-waste dismantling, non-e-waste dismantling, and open dump area, respectively. For PM2.5, the average concentrations at e-waste dismantling, non-e-waste dismantling, and open dump area were 29.71 ± 14.28, 33.81 ± 18.85, 30.68 ± 13.53 µg/m3, respectively. PM10 levels at open dumpsite were 1.2 and 1.1 times higher than those of e-waste dismantling area and non-e-waste dismantling area. Meanwhile, ANOVA analysis showed no significant differences (p > 0.05) of PM10 concentration between non- and e-waste dismantling, and open dumpsite. The level of PM2.5 at the e-waste dismantling area was only higher than the reference area but lower than non-e-waste dismantling and open dump area. Besides, there was no statistically significant difference between all sampling sites for PM2.5 concentration. PM10 at non-e-waste dismantling area and open dumpsite were exceeded guidelines of WHO (50 µg/m3), and also PM2.5 (25 µg/m3) of all sampling areas. In this e-waste community, there is no zoning provided for e-waste dismantling activities. Consequently, e-waste dismantling houses were randomly distributed in the community. Relationship between PM_(10) and PM_(2.5) levels in high-traffic area determined using path analysis and linear regression

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between PM10 and PM2.5 levels as related to meteorological conditions and traffic flow using both a linear regression analysis and a path analysis. The Particulate matter（PM） samples were collected from Sukhumvit road, Bangkok, Thailand, at both open（104 samples） and covered（92 samples）areas along the road. Fifteen percent of all samples were separated before the statistical models were run and used for model validation. The results from the path analysis were more elaborate than those from the linear regression, thus indicating that meteorological conditions had a direct effect on the particulate levels and that the effects of traffic flow were more variable in open areas. The model also indicated that meteorological conditions had an indirect effect and that traffic flow had a direct effect on particulate levels in covered areas. The model validation results indicated that for open areas, the R^2 values were not very different between the path analysis and the linear regression model, but that the path analysis was more accurate than the linear regression model at very low PM concentrations. At high PM concentrations, the path analysis model also had a better fit than did the linear regression, so the predictions from the path analysis model were more accurate than those from the linear regression.

River pollution monitoring over an industrial catchment in urban ecosystem: Challenges and proposed geospatial framework

Urban river pollution is considered a ‘necessary evil’ consequence of disproportionate developmental expansion in metropolises. Unprecedented expansion and anthropic activities amongst other reasons lead to choking of urban rivers with municipal and industrial sewage. Urban rivers are dying while awaiting rescue, despite the hard efforts by civic authorities, largely due to lack of coordination amongst river authorities and stakeholders, underlying conflicts spanning across all levels, balkanisation, pluralization, scarcity of reliable technical data, and financial constraints. Challenges faced by stakeholders in river pollution management as revealed in informational interviews are foregrounded. In an attempt to reduce some of the overwhelm faced by officials on ground, a geospatial framework is proposed which if functionally implemented can transparentize river water quality (WQ) monitoring, and facilitate pollution control. The pollution situation in a persistently polluted urban river near Mumbai city, India was explored and assessed in the middle of a restoration battle waged by environmental activists. Following secondary river water quality data acquisition, primary sample collection campaign and WQ testing, multivariate statistical data analysis was performed under data- and resource-constraint situation. Spatiotemporal monitoring and visualization of river water quality data holds great promise for effectively controlling anthropic river pollution. A subsequent geospatial analysis of the study area was performed using digital elevation model (DEM) based watershed delineation, land use land cover (LULC) classification, mapping of WQ monitoring locations, mapping of industrial clusters, integration of spatial data, and identifying polluter industries. This steered us to formulate and propose the geospatial framework and supplementary recommendations on how better to save this dying river. Decision-makers often encounter the challenge of efficient long-term ecological planning to consider economic and environmental trade-offs. However, tools to support stepwise mitigation strategies that account for dynamic ecological responses to continuing urban development are limited. Therefore, we developed a sequential action-based dynamic decision-making model to simulate stepwise mitigation measures in space over time using a multi-objective optimization algorithm. We focused on exploring the ecological corridors and habitat creation as mitigation measures through four decades to identify trade-offs and optimal plans that minimize landscape connectivity and edge density as ecological responses to urban development and minimize implementation costs per action. The results showed that adopting an initial low-investment strategy with sequential planning significantly enhanced potential ecological benefits beyond the 2000s compared with one-action planning. In contrast, the initial high-cost investment exhibited a gradual decline in the ecological benefits over time from 1995. The initial low-cost investment presented an opportunity to enhance ecological benefits by implementing early mitigation measures in locations capable of sustaining long-term ecological functions. The results suggest that sequential planning offers valuable insights into effective urban ecological planning by analyzing time-series data. This study enables step-by-step scenario testing, thereby supporting the facilitation of urban and regional sustainability planning. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Online community users’ perceptions of particulate matter in South Korea through topic modeling and semantic network analysis

In this study, we investigate public perception of particulate matter (PM) in South Korea to address the persistent high public anxiety levels surrounding this environmental issue. For this purpose, we first compared the monthly trends of PM concentrations, news articles, and online community posts. Furthermore, we performed a cross-correlation analysis between PM concentrations and online community posts, which are considered to be the most public-aware source, to examine how the public's response changes with variations in PM concentrations. Additionally, we conducted topic modeling and identified nine topics based on 2714 online community posts from January 2013 to December 2023. The results showed that public concern about PM is related to PM concentrations but media was found to play a role in amplifying it. The most prominent topic was the public's critical attribution of PM in Korea to China. Other topics included interest in PM forecasts, physical risks and personal responses to PM, requests for more active government response, and controversy over the South Korean government's PM reduction policies. In addition, the public has significant health concerns, leading to individual protective actions such as mask and air purifier purchases, possibly influenced by media and marketing strategies. There is a significant gap between public perceptions of the causes of PM and the direction and content of government policies. For instance, although the public tends to attribute PM primarily to external factors such as pollution from China, government policies appear to emphasize internal sources, such as regulating vehicle emissions. The discrepancy was found to make the public feel dissatisfied with policy implementation. This study demonstrates how the public perceives and interprets PM issues. It is also significant that we provide empirical evidence of the relationship between PM concentrations and online community posts through cross-correlation analysis. In this

Thermal decomposition kinetics of cassava rhizome (CR) is an important key in the torrefaction process. Kinetic analysis of the cassava rhizome torrefaction was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyser in which CR weight loss is measured under nitrogen atmosphere from ambient temperature to 973K at 5, 10, 20, and 30 K•min-1. Two model-free iso-conversional methods, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) have been used to determine activation energies as a function of the extent of degradation. In this work, the CR particles were separated into 3 study groups, 0.125-0.425 mm, 0.425-0.850, and 0.850-2 mm. The average activation energies calculated by using the methods are relatively similar for all three-particle size samples. The average activation energy values calculated by FWO method were 170.509, 172.593, and 130.149 kJ•mol-1, respectively. These data were comparable to KAS method in which the average activation energy numbers were 170.647, 177.276, and 128.620 kJ•mol-1. Both methods indicated that the activation energy was relatively constant until the conversion of 0.5. The pre-exponential factor values from FWO and KAS ranged 4.87E+17 s-1 and 7.28E+14 s-1, respectively. The experimental results show that kinetic parameters from both methods are suitable and effective to help describe the thermal degradation of the cassava rhizome. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The heat reduction effect of trees has been investigated through numerical simulations;however, there are still challenges to applying the scientific results to the planning process due to the model's complexity and the computational resources required. This study investigates a rapid spatial evaluation method for heat stress potential, measured by mean radiant temperature (MRT), by decomposing radiation into sub-radiation using a multilayer MRT model. This method also enables the reproduction of optimized layouts considering the effect of tree arrangement in residential buildings. Multi-objectives were achieved through an evolutionary algorithm, resulting in more effective design layouts combining tree types and arrangements, all within a standard budget. By adopting this study's approach, landscape designers can create climate-responsive tree layouts with reduced heat exposure and generate customized planting designs tailored to their preferences. © 2023, The Authors. Blood pressure medications are used to treat hypertension. However, low concentrations of beta-blockers in water systems can negatively impact aquatic wildlife. Here, we conducted a metabolic and behavioral study investigating atenolol, a beta-blocker frequently detected in global wastewater systems. The objectives were to determine the effects of low-level atenolol exposure on early stages of zebrafish. We measured survival, deformities, heartbeat, mitochondrial function, lipid and amino acid profiles, and locomotor activity to discern mechanisms of metabolic disruption. We hypothesized that atenolol would alter lipid metabolism, leading to reduced locomotor activity. Atenolol showed no overt toxicity to larval zebrafish up to 10 µg/L and deformities were infrequent (5 µg/L atenolol. Heart rates were reduced in 2 and 3 dpf embryos and larvae treated with >500 ng/L. There was no change in oxygen consumption rates (basal and maximum respiration) of embryos when exposed to a range of atenolol concentrations, suggesting mitochondrial respiration was intact. Oil red staining for lipid content in larvae showed a global reduction in lipids with 10 µg/L exposure, prompting deeper investigation into the lipid profiles. Lipidomics quantified 86 lipids and revealed reduced abundance in Ceramide 18:1 16:0 (Cer_NS d18:1_16:0), Ether linked Phosphatidylethanolamine 16:0 22:6 (EtherPE 16:0e_22:6), and Ether linked Phosphatidylcholine 16:0 22:6 (EtherPC 16:0e_22:6). Star formation rate (SFR) is a fundamental parameter for describing galaxies and inferring their evolutionary course. H II regions yield the best measure of instantaneous SFR in galaxies, although the derived SFR can have large uncertainties depending on tracers and assumptions. We present an SFR calibration for the entire molecular gas disk of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, based on our new high-sensitivity ALMA 100 GHz continuum data at 55 pc (= 0′′ . 8) resolution in combination with the HST Paα line data. In this calibration, we account for the spatial variations of dust extinction, electron temperature of H II regions, AGN contamination, and diffuse ionized gas (DIG) based on publicly available multi-wavelength data. Especially, given the extended nature and the possible non-negligible contribution to the total SFR, a careful consideration of DIG is essential. With a cross-calibration between two corrected ionized gas tracers (free-free continuum and Paα), the total SFR of the NGC 1068 disk is estimated to be 3.2 ± 0.5 M☉ yr−1, one-third of the SFR without accounting for DIG (9.1 ± 1.4 M☉ yr−1). We confirmed high SFR around the southern bar-end and the corotation radius, which is consistent with the previous SFR measurements. In addition, our total SFR exceeds the total SFR based on 8 µm dust emission by a factor of 1.5. We attribute this discrepancy to the differences in the young stars at different stages of evolution traced by each tracer and their respective timescales.
