The relationship between values and knowledge in visioning for landscape management: relevance for a collaborative approach

Respecting connections between the diversity of values and forms of knowledge is essential to support a decision-making that fosters relationships between ecosystems and people. However, little theory has been developed for clarifying interactions between values and knowledge, and their relevance for environmental policy. We surfaced the overlooked relationship between values and knowledge by studying individual cognitive and emotional processes during a guided visioning exercise in the context of the multifunctional landscapes of Ostergotland, Sweden. We investigated these cognitive processes using 30 semi-structured interviews and questionnaires organized around three types of relationships: vision. values, vision. knowledge, and especially values. knowledge. The analysis of the relationship between vision and values reveals that all types of values including core human values, relational, and intrinsic values are important in shaping the decision-making context in which landscape management visions arise. The relationship between vision and knowledge uncovers the mix of experiential and theoretical knowledge that informs the decisionmaking context. Interviews unfold three modalities in terms of how values and knowledge relate: i) linked and not necessarily connected (e.g. when individuals perceive a high conflict between their knowledge and their values leading to one construct silencing the other);ii) mutually reinforcing (e.g. when values and knowledge are seen as feeding into one another);and iii) intertwined (e.g. when individuals perceive that values and knowledge can co-exist). We discuss our findings in the context of their relevance for a collaborative decision-making process for balancing consensus and dissensus in multifunctional landscapes.

High-resolution leaf area index (LAI) data are essential for sustainable agro-ecosystem management and precise disturbance detection. Previous LAI products were primarily derived from satellite data with limited spatiotemporal or spectral resolutions, which could be overcome with the use of Sentinel-2. While hybrid methods that integrate PROSAIL simulations with machine learning offer advantages in extracting high-resolution LAI from Sentinel-2, they still face challenges due to confounding factors related to canopy structure, leaf biochemistry, and soil background. To reduce impacts of these confounders, we developed an efficient hybrid method for Sentinel-2-based LAI retrieval. Our approach consists of random forest models trained on simulated datasets generated by PROSAIL-5B with two refinements: variable canopy fraction of senescent leaves (FS) and soil bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) simulated by Brightness-Shape-Moisture (BSM) model. We corrected canopy BRF using near-infrared reflectance of vegetation (NIRV) and vegetation cover within mixed pixels (VC). For validation, we used LAI measurements across different vegetation types from the Copernicus Ground Based Observations for Validation (GBOV) and Korea flux (KoFlux) sites during 2019–2023. Our results showed that coupling BSM and FS with PROSAIL-5B simulations improved hybrid LAI estimates, reducing RMSE by 10.8%–73.8%. Utilizing NIRV and VC to correct canopy BRF better quantified LAI in most vegetation types, with RMSE reduced by 15.3%–64.8%. Our hybrid method showed robust agreement with ground validation LAI data from GBOV (R2 = 0.88, RMSE = 0.71) and KoFlux (R2 = 0.81, RMSE = 0.73) datasets. Overall, our method (R2 = 0.58–0.93) outperformed both the benchmark Sentinel Application Platform (R2 = 0.11–0.85) and data-driven (R2 = 0.09–0.85) algorithms in producing precise seasonal LAI data at finer resolutions. During long-term flux monitoring, we occasionally encounter situations where the existing measurement setup must be changed. Considering that one of the main purposes of long-term flux monitoring is identifying longterm variability and trends, which are relatively small, it is important to understand or correct for flux differences caused by the measurement setting changes. In this study, before changing the flux measurement height of the CRK (Cheorwon Rice paddy, Korea) site from 10 m to 5 m, we installed another eddy covariance system at 5 m and compared the sensible and H2O/CO2/CH4 fluxes at both heights from April 2020 to April 2021. Although random errors could explain substantial portions of the flux differences between the two heights, it was confirmed that systematic errors also existed because the means of the flux differences were not zero, and the distributions of the flux differences were also significantly skewed. Further analysis showed that the primary cause of these systematic errors was the footprint differences rather than the difference in turbulent transport between the two heights. Based on the results, we proposed a strategy for securing the continuity of the flux timeseries, which is necessary to understand the long-term variability using all data before and after a measurement change, and discussed the necessity of such a comparative observation.

Leveraging temporal, textural, and socio-environmental features for accurate detection of abandoned farmland

Detecting abandoned farmland is crucial for effective agricultural land management. By leveraging satellite imagery, and using temporal and textural features, machine learning studies have identified such lands. However, demographic and locational factors, though recognized as key drivers of farmland abandonment, have not been used as classification attributes. Our research employs Support Vector Machines and Random Forests, integrating these socio-environmental factors, achieves accuracies of 89.2 % and 88.5 % for overall and user classifications, respectively. We discovered that factors such as parcel size, slope, and road proximity are more critical than other conventional features in identifying abandoned farmland, recommending further investigation into these socio-environmental factors to uncover more impactful classification attributes. Additionally, our findings contrast with other studies by demonstrating that both higher and lower harmonic components of NDVI and NDWI enhance classification accuracy. This research could greatly assist in agricultural land surveys and in developing policies for sustainable farmland preservation.

If a neighbourhood is designed and built according to best practices for walkable neighbourhood design, will people respond and walk in the public realm? This was a narrowly focused case study of a brownfield redevelopment in Vancouver, Canada, intentionally designed to be highly walkable. Methods included a Walk Score® analysis, both in-person and video observational studies of people using three public spaces over a nine-month period, supplemented with questionnaires. Observational studies and questionnaires revealed high numbers of people using the public spaces for walking and active mobility throughout the year in all weather conditions, validating a very high Walk Score®. However, the study also uncovered unexpected patterns of walking and motivations for walking, which reveals the value of post-occupancy observational and survey studies to fully understand how specific attributes of the neighbourhood landscape may significantly change what people value and how they use the public realm. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

High soil organic carbon stocks under impervious surfaces contributed by urban deep cultural layers

Rapid urbanization has created large areas of impervious surface areas globally. As there is little carbon input by plants into soils under impervious surfaces, soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks under impervious surfaces generally have been overlooked in the urban carbon budgets. Here we investigate SOC stocks under impervious concrete surfaces and vegetative surfaces across soil profiles to a depth of 5 m in urban housing complexes in Seoul, Republic of Korea. In the top 1 m of the profile, SOC stocks under vegetative surfaces were three times greater than those under impervious surfaces. However, we discovered that unexpectedly high SOC stocks appeared in deeper soil layers under both surface types, which led to comparable SOC stocks at a depth of 5 m beneath the impervious surface (16.9 +/- 1.9 kgC m(-2)) and at the vegetative surface (22.3 +/- 2.2 kgC m(-2)). Consequently, the ratio of SOC stocks at depths of 1 m to 5 m were 16% in impervious surfaces and 34% in vegetative surfaces, suggesting conventional soil sampling at 1 m depth could miss large SOC. Stable isotope data (delta C-13 and delta N-15) combined with historical aerial photographs revealed that cropland that existed until the 1970s formed the high SOC cultural layer in deeper soils. Our results highlight that deep soils under impervious surfaces could be overlooked carbon hotspots in urban ecosystems. We believe this finding could help city planners and policy makers to assess regional carbon budgets and to reduce carbon footprint by recycling the deep SOC excavated from various construction projects towards sustainable urban development.

Mapping canopy photosynthesis in both high spatial and temporal resolution is essential for carbon cycle monitoring in heterogeneous areas. However, well established satellites in sun-synchronous orbits such as Sentinel-2, Landsat and MODIS can only provide either high spatial or high temporal resolution but not both. Recently established CubeSat satellite constellations have created an opportunity to overcome this resolution trade-off. In particular, Planet Fusion allows full utilization of the CubeSat data resolution and coverage while maintaining high radiometric quality. In this study, we used the Planet Fusion surface reflectance product to calculate daily, 3-m resolution, gap-free maps of the near-infrared radiation reflected from vegetation (NIRvP). We then evaluated the performance of these NIRvP maps for estimating canopy photosynthesis by comparing with data from a flux tower network in Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California, USA. Overall, NIRvP maps captured temporal variations in canopy photosynthesis of individual sites, despite changes in water extent in the wetlands and frequent mowing in the crop fields. When combining data from all sites, however, we found that robust agreement between NIRvP maps and canopy photosynthesis could only be achieved when matching NIRvP maps to the flux tower footprints. In this case of matched footprints, NIRvP maps showed considerably better performance than in situ NIRvP in estimating canopy photosynthesis both for daily sum and data around the time of satellite overpass (R-2 = 0.78 vs. 0.60, for maps vs. in situ for the satellite overpass time case). This difference in performance was mostly due to the higher degree of consistency in slopes of NIRvP-canopy photosynthesis relationships across the study sites for flux tower footprint-matched maps. The Impact of Covid-19 on Happiness: Changed Psychological and Attitudinal Characteristics

COVID-19 has had a considerable negative influence on subjective well-being. It has also been claimed that a decline in happiness has resulted from forced changes in psychological and attitudinal status (e.g., working from home, risk perception, or compactness preference) during the global pandemic. This study sought to empirically examine this association using a nationwide survey conducted in the United States in 2020. Socio-demographic life circumstances, COVID-19 restrictions, travel modes, and psychological and attitudinal characteristics were defined with 75 items to detail the story of happiness during the pandemic. The findings showed that socio-demographic factors contributed to the majority of happiness but that perceived infection risk of close relationships, restricted social interactions and activities, high infection risk perception, avoidance of online alternatives, and decreased compactness preference all contributed to reduced happiness. In particular, job, income level, and modes of transportation before COVID-19 also affected the level of happiness during COVID-19. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Urbanization and intensifying climate change expose populations in cities to escalating heat stress and associated health risks. Mitigating these challenges require comprehensive assessments that combine quantitative and qualitative data to develop effective heat wave response strategies and policies. Previous research has primarily focused on thermal sensation measured by individual biometrics within specific locations. However, limitations in data collection across large areas often lead to the neglect of the influence of diverse urban environments. This may disregard the importance of regional variations and citizen engagement in formulating effective heat wave mitigation strategies. This study explored the impact of heat wave frequency and intensity across various urban spatial types and assessed thermal sensation vote (TSV) among residents of Suwon City using a citizen science approach. Temperature measurements and subjective heat sensations were collected over a three-year period using homemade temperature sensors. The analysis investigated thermal sensation differences across spatial types—open high rise, open low rise, compact mid-rise, urban park, and lake park—utilizing boxplots, and examined TSV variations by age using the R program localized smoothing methodology. Results indicate significant variations in TSV across different urban areas, particularly when temperatures exceeded 32 °C. The TSV was highest in the lake park areas (average thermal sensation vote +3.5) and was comparatively lower in the open high-rise and open low-rise areas (average thermal sensation vote +2.0). A significant age-related trend was observed, with the highest TSV reported by the 19–30 age group. Heat sensitivity appeared to decrease among participants aged 41 and over. These findings highlight the limitations of traditional top-down heatwave response strategies, which may not adequately account for spatial variations and individual experiences.
