Development of Web-based remote monitoring system for the moving-actuator artificial heart

The remote monitoring system including hemodynamic information and pump status of the implanted animal could be helpful during the in vivo experiment or clinical trial for an artificial heart implantation. In order to monitor the course of the in vivo experiment continuously and anywhere, web-based remote monitoring system was developed, which could be monitored pressures (AoP, LAP, RAP, PAP) and flow information as well as the pump operating conditions. The system consists of the several parts including data sending, storing, viewer part. The data sending part was constructed using component object model and the viewer part was constructed using the Java applet. In addition, the dialog box was introduced to communicate each other instantly and the alarming function was also introduced when the hemodynamic values were out of the desired ranges. The developed remote monitoring system was applied during the in vivo experiment of the VVAD implantation for 1 month and showed designed work without fail.

The present study was to understand the true power irradiated to the cell line cultured on a culture well, in relation to the nominal power from ultrasonic transducer, and to characterize the temporal variations of the acoustic pressure exerted on the cell. Numerical simulation was carried out for a typical-culture well exposed to 1 MHz continuous ultrasound generated by a circular transducer contact underneath the well. The results showed that the ultrasonic pressure exposed to the cell layer in the well was 6.7 times larger than the nominal pressure of the ultrasonic transducer. The ultrasonic pressure in the transient period rose rapidly and was widely variable, and the temporal peak was even greater than that of the steady state period. This suggests that the cells undergo characteristically different ultrasonic exposure between the transient and the steady state period.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the saw-jawed monocle bream,Scolopsis ciliatawas determined by the next generation sequencing (NGS) technique. The circular mitogenome ofS. ciliata(16,733 bp) encoded the canonical 37 genes including 13 proteins, 22tRNAgenes, 2 rRNAs (12S rRNA and 16S rRNA), and two non-coding regions; the origin of light strand replication (OL) and the putative control region (D-Loop). The gene arrangement of theS. ciliatamitogenome was identical to its relative,Scolopsis vosmeri. Phylogenetic analysis based on the full mitochondrial genome sequences showed thatS. ciliatais most closely related toS. vosmeriwith 83% nucleotide sequence identity. The mitogenome information ofS. ciliatawould be the useful information to understand the evolutional relationship of fishes in genus Scolopsis.

Binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO) provides a wider view of fundus with stereopsis contrary to the direct one. Proposed system is composed of portable BIO and 3D viewing unit. The illumination unit of BIO utilized high flux LED as a light source, LED condensing lens cap for beam focusing, color filters and small lithium ion battery. In optics unit of BIO, beam splitter was used to distribute an examinee's fundus image both to examiner's eye and to CMOS camera module attached to device. Captured retinal video stream data from stereo camera modules were sent to PC through USB 2.0 connectivity. For 3D viewing, two video streams having parallax between them were aligned vertically and horizontally and made into side-by-side video stream for cross-eyed stereoscopy. And the data were converted into autostereoscopic video stream using vertical interlacing for stereoscopic LCD which has glass 3D filter attached to the front side of it. Our newly devised system presented the real-time 3-D view of fundus to assistants with less dizziness than cross-eyed stereoscopy. And the BIO showed good performance compared to conventional portable BIO (Spectra Plus, Keeler Limited, Windsor, UK). © 2009 SPIE-IS&T.

When an emergent case occurs, to give proper and immediate emergency treatment to a patient is as important as to transfer him or her to the hospital as early as possible. For this circumstance where first aid usually happens in an ambulance, we developed the Ubiquitous Integrated Biotelemetry System for Emergency Care (UIBSEC) based on wireless 3.5G HSDPA module in order to provide more proper and active medical care to a patient. For this system we performed experimental tests on the HSDPA module to measure practical performance values with respect to throughput and RTT (round-trip-time) and compared the result with the theoretical specifications. In the course of developing this system we created the C#-based Network Solution Library (NSL) which helps drastically reducing the overhead. We applied this library to components of the UIBSEC - two kinds of clients and one central server - and confirmed that it works smoothly in wireless networks and it is useful in the future development process of network applications. © 2007 IEEE.

The surface roughness aggravates droplet manipulation speed by increasing contact angle hysteresis (CAH) and pinning force between droplet and an electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) device. Because spacing between electrodes in the EWOD device cannot be filled up by thin film deposition process for an insulation and hydrophobic layer fabrication, trenches as deep as metal electrode layer are generated on the surface. The trenches increase the surface roughness of EWOD device, especially at the edge. In this work, polishing technique (chemical mechanical polishing, CMP) was appplied to EWOD fabrication to remove the trenches on the surface of the EWOD device. To verify the effect of the surface polishing on droplet speed improvement, we fabricated both unpolished and polished EWOD devices that comprised of 0.5 × 0.5, 1 × 1, and 1.5 × 1.5 mm2 electrodes array to manipulate 1 to 10 μL droplets. Droplet speed on the polished devices was improved by 21 to 100 % compared to that of the unpolished one.

A sophisticatedly designed polyelectrolyte diode was fabricated on a microchip and exhibited well-defined nonlinear rectifying behavior. Multiple polyelectrolyte diodes were integrated on a microchip to produce a variety of logic gates based on ionic circuits. By employing a fluorescent dye, the polyelectrolyte micro plugs also acted as optical indicators displaying the input signals applied to individual diodes in the ionic circuit on a microchip. Also, this system visualized the dynamic distribution of ions in a charged polymer phase under an electric field on a real time basis through fluorescence images. © 2009 CBMS.

The cyclic variation in echogenicity (CVE) was observed from the cross-sectional images of the common carotid artery using coded harmonic imaging of a GE ultrasound system. The objective of this research is to study the smoking acute effects on the amplitude of the CVE (Acve). A cve was analyzed among the 28 smokers before and after 1-2 cigarettes were smoked. The smokers were optimally divided into two clusters with respect to the change in Acve and the intrinsic characteristics of smokers (i.e., daily consumed cigarettes and smoking years) through a two-step cluster analysis (TSCA). The relative change of Acve after smoking was significantly higher in the heavy smoker cluster compared with the light smoker cluster. However, there is no significant difference in the absolute value of Acve between before and after smoking for both two clusters. The effect of tissue attenuation on Acve was compensated with body mass index (BMI). The compensated parameter, A'cve, is significantly increased in heavy smoker group after smoking (BS: 0.477.4;AS: 5.48.0;p0.05). It is in agreement with the analytical result of AAcve. Furthermore, after smoking, A'cve is significant higher in heavy smoker group (5.48.0), compared with light smoker group (1.36.7;p0.05). It suggests that the compensation of Acve is help to reduce the interference from tissue attenuation and is good for the comparison among individuals. © 2010 IEEE.

The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Icefish,Chionobathyscus dewittiwas determined by the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis. The complete mitogenome was 17,452 bp in length, which encoded the canonical 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, and two non-coding regions. As shown in the other notothenids, translocation of ND6 and an additional non–coding region were identified, which is different from the typical vertebrate mitochondrial genomes. TheC. dewittiwas clustered distinctly from the those in theChinodracoandChaenocephalus, which supported the idea that this species should be classified in the different genus,Chionobathyscusin the family Channichthyidae.
