Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of lung cancer in Asian never-smoking women have previously identified six susceptibility loci associated with lung cancer risk. To further discover new susceptibility loci, we imputed data from four GWAS of Asian non-smoking female lung cancer (6877 cases and 6277 controls) using the 1000 Genomes Project (Phase 1 Release 3) data as the reference and genotyped additional samples (5878 cases and 7046 controls) for possible replication. In our meta-analysis, three new loci achieved genome-wide significance, marked by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs7741164 at 6p21.1 (per-allele odds ratio (OR) = 1.17; P = 5.8 × 10(-13)), rs72658409 at 9p21.3 (per-allele OR = 0.77; P = 1.41 × 10(-10)) and rs11610143 at 12q13.13 (per-allele OR = 0.89; P = 4.96 × 10(-9)). These findings identified new genetic susceptibility alleles for lung cancer in never-smoking women in Asia and merit follow-up to understand their biological underpinnings.

Biometrics recognition systems implemented in a realworld environment often have to be content with adverse biometrics signal acquisition which can vary greatly in this environment. This includes acoustic noise that can contaminate speech signals or artifacts that can alter heart sound signals. In order to overcome these recognition errors, researchers all over the world apply various methods such as normalization, feature extraction, classification to address this issue. Recently, combining biometrics modalities has proven to be an effective strategy to improve the performance of biometrics systems. The approach in this paper is based on biometrics recognition which used the heart sound signal as a feature that can't be easily copied The Mel- Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) is used as a feature vector and vector quantization (VQ) is used as the matching model algorithm. A simple yet highly reliable method is introduced for biometric applications. Experimental results show that the recognition rate of the Heart Sound Speaker identification (HS-SI) model is 81.9% while (S-SI) the rate for the Speech Speaker Independent model is 99.3% for a 21 client, 40 imposter database. Heart sound- speaker verification (HS-SV) provides an average EER of 17.8% while the average EER for the speech speaker verification model (S-SV) is 3.39%. In order to reach a higher security level an alternative to the above approach, which is based on multimodal and a fusion technique, is implemented into the system. The best performance of the work is based on simple-sum score fusion with a pricewise-linear normalization technique which provides an EER of 0.69%.

Effects of laser-peening parameters on plastic deformation have been investigated through hardness measurements. The laser-peening parameter consisting of laser parameters, pressure of laser-produced plasma, propagation of laser-induced shock wave and initial state of target material should be optimized for efficient laser peening. The laser parameters are one of the important factor, thus laser intensity and coverage which corresponds to the number of laser shots irradiated per unit of area have been changed to estimate the laser peening effect in this study. Second harmonic of Nd:YAG laser having the pulse duration of 4 ns has been used. Commercial SUS316L stainless steel has been adopted as a sample. The samples were investigated under nanosecond laser-shock loading in plasma confined by water. Vickers microhardness is used to probe work hardening due to plastic deformation induced by laser peening. Through hardness measurements, it is found that desirable coverage for producing the plastic deformation has been existed, which depends on the laser irradiation intensity.

The patellofemoral joint prosthesis has been a topic of interest comparing to total knee joint replacements. In recent years, there have been more interests in the development of unicompartmental prostheses which is in line with minimally-invasive surgery used in modern days. Therefore, this research presents an in-vitro pilot study in the area of patellofemoral stability characteristics of unicompartmental prosthesis comparing to normal knees. The findings from this research show promising results which will give rise to more researches and interests in developing better unicompartmental knee prosthesis.

The purpose of this research was to study on the design and construction of infusion pump calibrator. This research has adopted the principle of physics, electronics and microcontroller. The designed and constructed the infusion pump calibrator was composed of three main parts: 1)the control part consisting of micro switches for selected the operating mode, 2) signals detection part composing of load cells, pressure sensor for measuring flow rate and occlusion alarm respectively and 3) the processing and display part comprising of microcontroller AVR ATmega1280 with C Language program and LCD sequentially. The results of functional testing were compared with standard infusion devices analyzer Metron Lagu showed that the average percentage error of flow rate measuring and occlusion pressure tests were 0.45 percent and 0.21 percent successively.
