With an ever-increasing population of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients worldwide, a noninvasive treatment for AD is needed. In this paper, the application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulus (rTMS) as a treatment for patients with probable AD is compared to the application of rTMS as a treatment for depression. Comorbidity of depression and dementia is discussed, as well as possible links between the two diseases. The possible confounding antidepressant effects of rTMS on cognitive improvements in AD patients are discussed.

This paper studies the application of the non-linear model (ANN, ANFIS). ANN and ANFIS were used to fit a Blood-Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signal with design architecture. A model proposes to define region of interest (ROI) in brain fMRI images. The result shows the ANFIS model can be represent to fit the BOLD data better than ANN. Three paradigms were stimulated at difference issue activation in specific parameter (activation time, duration and signal strength). In this case a higher frequency and amplitude paradigm has stimulated on the brain area activation faster and more frequently.

Medical images segmentation is an important work for object recognition of the human organs and it is an important pre-processing step in medical image segmentation and 3D reconstruction. Conventionally, segmentation is detected according to some early brought forward algorithms such as gradient-based algorithm and template-based algorithm, but they are not so good for noise medical image segmentation. In this paper, basic morphological theory and operations are introduced at first, and then a novel morphological segmentation algorithm is proposed to detect the segment of mammographic masses with salt-and-pepper noise. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient for medical image denoising and segmentation than the usually used template-based segmentation algorithms and general morphological segmentation algorithms.

A Mammography Database and Viewer System have collected and stored mammography images of Thai women, treated at the Radiology Department of Hospital in Rangsit, Pathumtani, Thailand, constructed a database using the digitized mammography images, and developed an image viewing system to display these digital mammograms. The images are stored with the high resolution Matrox Morphis (MOR/2VD/84*) frame grabber board. The digital mammography database is powered by MySQL and PHP. It also has a web-based search engine (with secure access) so that the information can be made accessible to all medical team members. The image viewing software, DICOM Viewer, is coded in Borland C++ Builder and is intended to help medical professionals view and retrieve large data sets in near real time. This have already digitized 200 cases (one case per patient, twenty to forty images per case). The system also have developed a MySQL-based image database, and a PHP-based web-search engine to retrieve cases that have masses (benign or malignant) or calcifications (benign or malignant). This database has been evaluated by medical professionals and the experimental results obtained so far are very promising (high image qualities, fast access time). The system are currently developing an image content-based retrieval function for the database system in order to provide improved search capability for the medical professionals.

Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncommon disease. However, SCC has recently become an important clinical problem due the identification of a significantly high incidence of SCC among a group of black African patients with AIDS. However, basic research concerning SCC, including both intraepithelial and invasive squamous neoplasia, is limited due to the lack of an ocular tumor animal model. Specifically, current ocular imaging and treatment modalities are insufficient for investigating currently available small animal models, because the conjunctival space is not comparable to that of humans. We describe the development of a reproducible model of subconjunctival squamous carcinoma in moderate-sized immunocompetent rabbits. Under optical coherence tomography guidance, 1 × 107 VX2 carcinoma cells are inoculated into the subconjunctival space of 3 to 4-kg New Zealand white rabbits. Malignant tumor involvement developed on the subconjunctival space after an average of 1 to 2 weeks. This subconjunctival tumor model induction method will likely facilitate a broad range of investigation of subconjunctival cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. © Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Heart sounds are generated by the fluctuations of blood velocity and the vibrations of cardiac structure. The auscultation of heart sounds is one of the basic tools for patient diagnosis and provides a lot of information associated with cardiovascular systems. For converting mechanical sound waves into electronic signals, PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensor was used as heart sounds measurement device. After suited filtering process, the first (S1) and the second (S2) heart sounds components were plainly distinguished and their peak timings were closely corresponded to reference heart sounds signals measured by microphone. Lastly, there was high correlation between S1 intervals (from PVDF signals) and RR intervals (from ECG signals). So it is expected that S1 intervals can replace RR intervals. In future application, these methods have possibilities for non-intrusive heart rate estimation.

As a smartphone is becoming very popular and its performance is being improved fast, a smartphone shows its potential as a low-cost physiological measurement solution which is accurate and can be used beyond the clinical environment. Because cardiac pulse leads the subtle color change of a skin, a pulsatile signal which can be described as photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal can be measured through recording facial video using a digital camera. In this paper, we explore the potential that the reliable heart rate can be measured remotely by the facial video recorded using smartphone camera. First, using the front facing-camera of a smartphone, facial video was recorded. We detected facial region on the image of each frame using face detection, and yielded the raw trace signal from the green channel of the image. To extract more accurate cardiac pulse signal, we applied independent component analysis (ICA) to the raw trace signal. The heart rate was extracted using frequency analysis of the raw trace signal and the analyzed signal from ICA. The accuracy of the estimated heart rate was evaluated by comparing with the heart rate from reference electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. Finally, we developed FaceBEAT, an iPhone application for remote heart rate measurement, based on this study.
