Newly developed dual-heat-flux thermometer is expected to be useful in measuring core body temperature noninvasively. However, as it takes more than 30 min to measure, the additional process is needed to reduce the measure time. In this study, we made a dual-heat-flux thermometer to verify its performance and obtained an hour-long data from three subjects. Dual-heat-flux thermometer estimated the core body temperature very well in all subjects. In addition, least squares curve-fitting method predicted deep body temperature well with within 100 sec data. Autoregressive model with 10 sec data also seemed to be suitable method for shortening measure time of dual-heat-flux thermometer.

The rate of increase in the number of aging population in Korea is very rapid among OECD-member countries. And fall accident is one of the most common factors that threaten the health of the elderly. Therefore, it is needed to develop a fall detection system for the elderly. Most fall detection systems use accelerometers attached on the torso. And in various studies, it was verified that these systems have high sensitivity and high specificity. However, the elderly would feel uncomfortable when banding a sensor on the chest every day. Therefore, in this study, we attached an accelerometer on the shoes to detect fall in the elderly. This prototype system would be improved as a smaller, low-power system in the next study. Also, applying energy harvesting device to this shoe system is being developed to reduce the weight of battery.

Ubiquitous medical technology may provide advanced utility for evaluating the status of the patient beyond the clinical environment. The iPhone provides the capacity to measure the heart rate, as the iPhone consists of a 3-axis accelerometer that is sufficiently sensitive to perceive tiny body movements caused by heart pumping. In this preliminary study, an iPhone was tested and evaluated as the reliable heart rate extractor to use for medical purpose by comparing with reference electrocardiogram. By comparing the extracted heart rate from acquired acceleration data with the extracted one from ECG reference signal, iPhone functioning as the reliable heart rate extractor has demonstrated sufficient accuracy and consistency.

Background Long-term and high-dose treatment with glucocorticoids causes bone loss and can lead to secondary osteoporosis in both human and mice. The molecular mechanisms underlying the adverse effects of glucocorticoids on bone are not well understood. We recently demonstrated that osteoblast-targeted disruption of glucocorticoid signalling attenuates glucocorticoid-induced bone loss in mice, indicating that the detrimental skeletal effects of glucocorticoids are predominantly mediated by osteoblasts. Objectives To further determine the role of the osteoblast in glucocorticoid-induced bone loss, we aimed to elucidate the effects of glucocorticoids on the gene expression profile in bone cells. Methods Seven-week old male CD1 outbred mice were subcutaneously implanted with slow-release pellets containing either 1.5 mg corticosterone (CS) or placebo (PLC) over 28 days. Blood was obtained weekly and osteocalcin serum levels were measured by IRMA. RNA was isolated from tibia at endpoint (day 28) and Affymetrix Gene Array analysis (GeneSpring GX) was performed to assess changes in expression of genes associated with osteoblast differentiation and the regulation of bone remodelling. Genes considered to be regulated were at least 1.5-fold differentially expressed. Quantitative RT-PCR was employed to validate the gene array results on a selection of genes. Results By comparing gene expression profiles in RNA from mice treated with corticosterone or placebo, we found that corticosterone specifically regulated 391 genes. To further investigate the genes targeted by corticosterone treatment we performed gene ontology analysis with the aid of heat maps. We found that the expression of genes implicated in osteoblast differentiation and the regulation of bone remodelling was downregulated in mice treated with corticosterone compared to placebo. We observed a downregulation of the osteoblast markers Runx2, Colα1, osteocalcin and sclerostin in corticosterone-treated mice compared t

Background There is a difficulty in evaluating the in heterogeneity among cartilage affected by osteoarthritis vivo functionality of individual chondrocytes, and there is much (OA). In this study, in vitro cultured chondrocytes harvested from varying stages of degeneration were studied as a projective model to further understand the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis.
Methods Cartilage of varying degeneration of end-stage OA was harvested, while cell yield and matrix glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content were measured. Cell morphology, proliferation, and gene expression of collagen type 1,‘11, and X, aggrecan, matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP-13), and ADAMTS5 of the acquired chondrocytes were measured during subsequent in vitro culture. Results Both the number of cells and the GAG content increased with increasing severity of OA. Cell spreading area increased and gradually showed spindle-like morphology during in vitro culture. Gene expression of collagen type II, collagen type X as well as GAG decreased with severity of cartilage degeneration, while expression of collagen type I increased. Expression of MMP-13 increased with severity of cartilage degeneration, while expression of ADAMTS-5 remained stable. Expression of collagen type II, X, GAG, and MMP-13 substantially decreased with in vitro culture. Expression of collagen type I increased with in vitro cultures, while expression of ADAMTS 5 remained stable.
Conclusions Expression of functional genes such as collagen type Ⅱ and GAG decreased during severe degeneration of OA cartilage and in vitro dedifferentiation. Gene expression of collagen I and MMP-13 increased with severity of cartilage degeneration.

This work aims at identifying and evaluating the associations between the pharmaceutical assistance activities in hospital pharmacies services (HPS). The Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was applied to a sample of 238 hospitals and 30 variables from the survey Diagnosis of Hospital Pharmacy in Brazil. The first dimension of the MCA explained 90.6% of the data variability and allowed discriminate the HPS according to the presence or not of activities. It is noticeable an association between the presence of activities and better categories with large hospitals.

The purpose of this paper is to assess Parkinson tremor estimating actual distance amplitude. We propose a practical, useful and simple method for evaluating Parkinson tremor with distance value. We measured resting tremor of 7 Parkinson Disease (PD) patients with triaxial accelerometer. Resting tremor of participants was diagnosed by Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) by neurologist. First, we segmented acceleration signal during 7 seconds from recorded data. To estimate a displacement of tremor, we performed double integration from the acceleration. Prior to double integration, moving average method was used to reduce an error of integral constant. After estimation of displacement, we calculated tremor distance during 1s from segmented signal using Euclidean distance. We evaluated the distance values compared with UPDRS. Averaged moving distance during 1 second corresponding to UPDRS 1 was 11.52mm, that of UPDRS 2 was 33.58mm and tremor distance of UPDRS 3 was 382.22 mm. Estimated moving distance during 1s was proportional to clinical rating scale — UPDRS.
In this paper we propose a Rapid Prototyping Environment (RPE) for real-time biosignal analysis including ECG, EEG, ECoG and EMG of humans and animals requiring a very precise time resolution. Based on the previous RP...
