Wireless networked multi-site triaxial accelerometry system was proposed to estimate activity energy expenditure during daily life. Proposed system used different estimation algorithms according to activity classification based on measured acceleration signals. The estimation results showed higher correlation (R{sup}2=0.98) and smaller standard errors of estimation (SEE=0.66 kcal) than any other system in preceding reports.

A major drawback on the application of thermal therapies is the lack of reliable knowledge about temperature in the region under treatment. The most attractive approach is non‐invasive temperature estimation (NITE) strategies and, among them, techniques based on backscattered ultrasound (BSU) are a convenient choice for its portability and simplicity. Using BSU some methods have been proposed for temperature estimation basically for homogeneous media, and simple operating situations. More complex scenarios can be explored by non‐linear approaches. In this work, a methodology based on neural networks is presented for temperature estimation in a multilayer phantom. A three‐layer gel‐based phantom was heated at eight intensities, between 0.30 and 2.0 W/cm2 (at 1MHz) for 15 minutes. Temperature and BSU signals were acquired from five spatial‐points at each 10 seconds. Temporal echo‐shifts, induced by temperature change, were computed from the BSU signals, and used as model's input information. Neural models were developed to estimate temperature at four intensities. Then models were validated in data including all the intensities. The best model presents a maximum absolute error of 0.43 °C for untrained situations. To the best of our knowledge this is the first NITE approach in multilayered media.

The aim of this paper is to find a relation between HRV parameters of ECG and stressful driving situation in the real road through various tests. First, we gave a stress to the subject by increasing the driving speed using driving simulator in the laboratory. Second, the subject drove the vehicle on the real road. Through let him drove in the busy narrow street, we evoked stress. ECG and PPG signal was recorded from steering wheel and back cushion each unconsciously. The driving experiment with simulator was not suitable to reproduce actual traffic condition because the adaptation was occurred. On the other hand, in real driving test, the results show that the heart rate is increase, and SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50 were decreased. The heart rate is the strongest indicator and other parameters tend to be changed depend on a personal. The blood pressure had no significant changes. Our results show the good possibility of that the time parameters of the HRV could be used as an instantaneous stress indicator.

Mechano-active scaffolds were fabricated from very elastic poly(L-lactide-co-Ε-carprolactone). The scaffolds with 80% porosity and 300-500 um pore size were prepared by a gel-pressing method. As a control group for elastic properties of polymer scaffolds, rigid poly L-lactide scaffolds were fabricated. The scaffolds were seeded with chondrocytes and cultured to evaluate the effect of elastic properties of polymer scaffolds for the differentiation and the ECM secretion of chondrocytes. Also, the chondrocytes-seeded constructs were implanted in nude mice subcutaneously to investigate their biocompatibility and cartilage formation. From the biochemical analyses, chondrogenic differentiation was sustained and enhanced significantly and chondral extracellular matrix was increased through mechanical stimulation of dynamic environment in the dynamic body systems. Histological analysis showed that implants of PLCL constructs formed mature and well-developed cartilaginous tissue, as evidenced by chondrocytes within lacunae. Consequently, the elastic PLCL scaffolds could be used to engineer cartilage in mechanically dynamic environments.
