A wide frequency band from 1 to 20 MHz ultrasonic transducer was fabricated by hydrothermal deposition technique of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) polycrystalline thick film. The PZT thick film of 45 μm was deposited on a 12mm × 12mm × 50μm Ti substrate. An electrode of 8 mm × 8mm was deposited on the PZT film. Wave generation of the transducer was demonstrated by experiments in water. From a single pulse excitation measurement, transmission ultrasound generated was from 1 to 20 MHz within 20 dB deviation. A sound pressure level of the radiated ultrasound was 61kPa at 19.6 MHz. A harmonic driving using 2 MHz rectangular wave signal produced a wave which included odd order harmonic components from 3rd to 11th harmonics. ©2004 IEEE.

The studies of ECG measurement on the toilet seat have been performed specifically for the ubiquitous health care. Instead of the mainly used dry electrodes having several problems such as the electrical safety or the environmental stability, we used the capacitively-coupled insulated electrodes, which were composed of the Cu plate and the PTFE film for the measurement. The bio-signal sensed with the insulated electrodes was measured through the ultra-high input impedance system including OPA111 having the common mode impedance of 1014 Ω. As the result of measuring the signal, with the electrical ground on the neck or the hand, the R-peaks were detected very positively. However, without the electrical ground on the body, we could detect the heartbeat signal, a kind of the motion artifacts by the variation of the blood vessel volume. It seems that this heartbeat signal can be also used as the important parameter like the R-peaks for the HRV (heart rate variability) analysis. In addition, it is thought that, without the directly electrical ground, the R-peak detection will be possible by the improvement of the SNR with the active common canceling system.

programs for the analysis of pathological voice data have been presented for the last few decades. Computerized Speech Lab (CSL) has been recognized as a standard in the field of pathological voice analysis. PRAAT is a new open program which is constantly being improved almost every week. CSL gives the "Voice disorders database" which was produced by Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. In this paper, we use PRAAT program for the analysis of voice data and compare the result of PRAAT with the result of CSL. We focus on the perturbation analysis on frequencies using several parameters like jitter, standard deviation of fundamental frequencies etc.

In current state-of-the-art resorbable orthopedic implant materials, loss of strength occurs before substantial mass loss in the degradation process. Materials such as 1:1 PLA:PGA copolymers become too weak to carry any load long before significant amounts of bone have grown to replace the eroded prostheses. An alternative is a two-stage implant material that is both load bearing and osteoconductive;a property of a material to encourage bone already being formed, to lie closely to or adhere to its surface. To achieve this, an interpenetrating network of osteoconductive material and strong (but degradable) biocompatible material is needed. In comparison to conventional prosthesis or scaffold manufacturing routes, rapid prototyping (RP) techniques are an attractive means of fabricating these two-stage implants. A poly butylene terephthalate polymer blend scaffold with 150-300 urn diameter interconnected pores was built using RP and coated with a thin coating of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) or hydroxy apatite suspension in a polycaprolactone matrix. Tissue culture results showed that scaffolds with such thin coatings were more conducive to growth of the cells, perhaps due to a more open scaffold, where the cells can proliferate more easily compared to the other types. The interpenetrating combination of the two biodegradable materials was designed to allow rapid bone in-growth while providing support. This preliminary study validates our hypothesis that the RP process combined with thin coating of HA can tailor an implant to the needs of a specific patient.

Electric, water, gas and transportation utilities face severe challenges associated with security, quality, availability, reliability and profitability issues. They must solve interrelated system problems with respect to generation of electricity, transportation of fuel, and potable as well as waste water. In the future, engineers and managers of utilities must be well versed in the different disciplines of engineering including electrical civil, mechanical and information technology. The University of Colorado at Boulder addresses this educational opportunity by proposing a novel Integrated Utilities Management program for M.S. candidates who have a solid B.S. background or equivalent in a related discipline. The M.S. program will consist of four interdisciplinary paths dealing with business management and legal topics as they relate to federal and state regulatory issues, as well as agency and people-related leadership issues. The electric utilities option of this program will be centered on three core courses related to electric power generation/transmission and distribution, security and availability, quality and reliability, economics and environmental policy, and utility finance;two elective courses from a group of courses that address nuclear power, waste water, solid waste, telecommunications, renewable energies, data communication, fuels and case studies;and one capstone course consisting of either operations research or the investigation and resolution of a pending utility project such as the right-of-way of transmission lines, specification of new power plants, retrofitting of power plants or their impact on the environment. It is expected that candidates for this MS program will come from universities, from utilities, and from private and public agencies. The MS program can be completed by full- or part time students within one or two years of intensive study, respectively. We developed an integrated home telemedicine system equipped with automatic diagnosis and consultation function for patients with chronic disease such as cardiac disease, respiratory disease, diabetes and hypertension. The system measures standard 12ch ECG, respiratory function, blood glucose level and noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP). The measured data were stored on the system and transmitted to the central server everyday through the internet. The system performed automatic diagnosis at every measurement and offered medical consultation to the patient If there was any abnormality in the diagnostic result, the system gave a real time alarm to the healthcare center for adequate teleconsultation or medical service. We have installed the developed system on an apartment for the performance evaluation and confirmed the possibility of the system as an effective tool for the telemedicine. © 2003 IEEE.
