Lumen and nuclei detection in histopathology of prostate cancer based on morphological feature extraction

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. The results of a fast and precise classification can be a fundamental objective of reference. Histological assessment is valuable information for doctors. The most common assessment for histological assessment of prostate cancer is the Gleason Grading System. Gleason pattern detection was done by extracting morphological features in the form of Line Length, Area Fraction, and the comparison between Line Length and Area Fraction. All morphological features become the input of backpropagation. Based on the results of backpropagation testing, this method can classify Gleason pattern images with an accuracy of 91.67%. The threshold of segmentation in determining the lumen and nucleus did not have a specific range in its threshold due to the lack of uniform contrast in each image.

We study magnon-driven spin and heat transport in a magnetic linear junction (MLJ) formed by two ferromagnets in optical lattices linked via linearly aligned bonds. Using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, we uncover that under weak effective Zeeman fields, where Bose-Einstein statistics of magnons dominate, magnonic criticality dramatically enhances spin and thermal conductances. These singular transport properties depend on the junction geometry, and the transport properties qualitatively differ between the linear junction in this paper and the point contact in our previous work. The quantum-enhanced conductances result in the breakdown of the magnonic Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law. In the classical regime at temperatures much lower than magnon energy gaps, we find that a magnonic Lorenz number becomes independent of temperature yet dependent on junction geometry, sharply contrasting with the universal WF law for Fermi liquids. We also find that the interface geometry of the MLJ decouples spin and heat relaxations between ferromagnets with decay times insensitive to temperature and effective Zeeman fields. These dynamics reveal junction-geometry-sensitive magnon transport distinct from Fermi liquids, paving the way for new avenues in thermomagnetic research leveraging the tunability of cold atomic systems.

This study explored the first direct and inverse modelling of Carbon monoxide (CO) concentration by applying three different computational approaches namely, Least Square-boost (L-Boost), Hammerstein Weiner (HW), and Multi-variate regression (MVR) models for modelling CO using Sulphur dioxide (SO₂), Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and Ozone (O₃). Two filters feature extraction methods were used in the input-combinations selection, which was classified into the direct modelling approach (C1) and inverse modelling approach (C2). Four different statistical metrics, including Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, Person correlation coefficient, mean absolute error and mean absolute percentage error was used in evaluating the performance of the models. Based on the performance skills of the models, it is indicated that the direct modelling approach showed superior performance to the inverse approach. Furthermore, the non-linear models (HW and L-Boost) depict higher performance skills than the linear MVR model. Overall, the L-Boost-C1 models showed higher performance based on statistical metrics. © 2023 The Authors

Braided structure artificial ligament from poly-l-lactide-co-caprolactone (PLA-CL) for anterior cruciate ligament injury

Based on the data from the National Sports Hospital of Indonesia in 2015, the sports injury cases in adults reached 1.5 million/year and in kids increased to 3-4 million/year. The body part that often gets injured is the knee, especially the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) which reached 50% of all the cases of knee injuries. The healing potential in ACL injury is very low due to poor vascularization. Therefore, many surgeons still prefer to perform surgery as an alternative way to treat the ACL injury. The use of artificial ligament for ACL surgery has many advantages compared to the autograft or allograft. In the previous study, PLLA was used as an artificial ligament. However, the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) was only 7 MPa, which is not reached the standard value for ACL. With the copolymerization between PLLA and PCL into PLA-CL, it is expected a material which fulfills the artificial ligament's standards. In addition, by using the braiding method, it is expected that the UTS value will be increased. This study is aimed to determine the effects of the variations in copolymer PLA-CL composition and the effects of the braiding angle. The variations in the composition that were used are 100:0, 85:15, 15:85 and 0:100 while the angular variations are 70° and 80°. The characteristics tested were functional groups, fiber morphology, pore size, mechanical properties, wettability, cytotoxicity, and degradation rate. The results of functional group tests with FTIR showed a shift in wave number and the appearance of chemical bonds in PLA-CL copolymers. The addition of caprolactone concentration could increase the fiber diameter and the pore size between fibers, which caused the decreasing of the mechanical strength. It could also increase the contact angle and the percentage of living cells, but it inhibited the degradation process. The optimal braiding angle based on the tensile test is 80°. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an early childhood disorder that affects individual ability to interact and socialize with other people. Children with ASD have problems interacting with their peers and have difficulty to exercise their social skills. In this study, a virtual reality (VR) based assistive tool was modelled and simulated using a gaming software called Dark Basic Professional (DBPro). The assistive tool was developed to support ASD children to interact and apply the social skills. Seven tasks were designed for the VR assistive tool based on three targeted skills including facial expression recognition, reading comprehension, and task delivery. As a preliminary study, only three non-ASD children were participated in the VR assistive tool experiment to analyse the tasks. The experiment results showed that all participants successfully performed five out of seven tasks. However, all participants failed to perform the video prompting task while one participant was not able to recognize the emotion from robotics-based faces in the facial expression. The results from pulse sensor showed that the heart rate was stable during the basic experiment using VR but unstable during the applied experiment and real-world discussion. There is a need to review the overall modelling and simulation technique, and the number of participants among ASD children should be increased for the future study.

Thermal decomposition kinetics of cassava rhizome (CR) is an important key in the torrefaction process. Kinetic analysis of the cassava rhizome torrefaction was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyser in which CR weight loss is measured under nitrogen atmosphere from ambient temperature to 973K at 5, 10, 20, and 30 K•min-1. Two model-free iso-conversional methods, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) have been used to determine activation energies as a function of the extent of degradation. In this work, the CR particles were separated into 3 study groups, 0.125-0.425 mm, 0.425-0.850, and 0.850-2 mm. The average activation energies calculated by using the methods are relatively similar for all three-particle size samples. The average activation energy values calculated by FWO method were 170.509, 172.593, and 130.149 kJ•mol-1, respectively. These data were comparable to KAS method in which the average activation energy numbers were 170.647, 177.276, and 128.620 kJ•mol-1. Both methods indicated that the activation energy was relatively constant until the conversion of 0.5. The pre-exponential factor values from FWO and KAS ranged 4.87E+17 s-1 and 7.28E+14 s-1, respectively. The experimental results show that kinetic parameters from both methods are suitable and effective to help describe the thermal degradation of the cassava rhizome. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Prostate cancer biopsy benefits from accurate fusion of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and magnetic resonance (MR) images. In the past few years, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been proved powerful in extracting image features crucial for image registration. However, challenging applications and recent advances in computer vision suggest that CNNs are quite limited in its ability to understand spatial correspondence between features, a task in which the self-attention mechanism excels. This paper aims to develop a self-attention mechanism specifically for cross-modal image registration. Our proposed crossmodal attention block effectively maps each of the features in one volume to all features in the corresponding volume. Our experimental results demonstrate that a CNN network designed with the cross-modal attention block embedded outperforms an advanced CNN network 10 times of its size. We also incorporated visualization techniques to improve the interpretability of our network. The source code of our work is available at https://***/DIAL-RPI/Attention-Reg. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Icefish,Chionobathyscus dewittiwas determined by the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis. The complete mitogenome was 17,452 bp in length, which encoded the canonical 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, and two non-coding regions. As shown in the other notothenids, translocation of ND6 and an additional non–coding region were identified, which is different from the typical vertebrate mitochondrial genomes. TheC. dewittiwas clustered distinctly from the those in theChinodracoandChaenocephalus, which supported the idea that this species should be classified in the different genus,Chionobathyscusin the family Channichthyidae.

In this paper, a breakthrough was achieved in large-scale production of N-doped Graphene Nano Sheets (N-GNS) using coconut fruits. The main objectives were to produce N-GNS on a large scale and assess its electrical conductivity. The process involved two key steps: first, producing GNS from coconut fruits through pyrolysis, and then generating N-GNS by doping with nitrogen using ammonia solution at room temperature. Various analytical techniques were used to characterize the produced N-GNS, including X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The XRD data indicated that the C (002) peak of N-GNS shifted to a higher 2θ value (2θ = 24.72°) compared to GNS (2θ = 23.86°), suggesting an incorporation of nitrogen into carbon structure in N-GNS. This was further supported by XPS data, which identified N-pyridine (BE = 402.0 eV) and C-N (BE = 286.8 eV) in N-GNS. TEM images showed that N-GNS had a flat surface, and the distance between graphene layers slightly expanded (0.36 nm) compared to graphene layers (0.34 nm). SEM images and EDX data validated the morphology, resembling honeycomb lattices, with a significant content of N atoms. Raman data successfully identified the D-band and G-band in N-GNS, further validating its production. Most importantly, N-GNS exhibited electrical conductivity, making it a promising candidate for conductive and supporting materials in various applications. The significance of this research extends beyond N-GNS production, opening up new avenues for the sustainable synthesis of valuable nanomaterials from coconut fruit waste, contributing to both graphene technology and environmental conservation. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.
