Traditional disease surveillance systems depend on outpatient reporting and virological test results released by hospitals. These data have valid and accurate information about emerging outbreaks but it's often not timely. In recent years the exponential growth of users getting connected to social media provides immense knowledge about epidemics by sharing related information. Social media can now flag more immediate concerns related to outbreaks in real time. In this paper we apply the long short-term memory recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture to classify tweets conveyed influenza-related information and compare its performance with baseline algorithms including support vector machine (SVM), decision tree, naive Bayes, simple logistics, and naive Bayes multinomial. The developed RNN model achieved an F-score of 0.845 on the MedWeb task test set, which outperforms the F-score of SVM without applying the synthetic minority oversampling technique by 0.08. The F-score of the RNN model is within 1% of the highest score achieved by SVM with oversampling technique. © 2017 AFNLP

As colonoscopy is the gold standard screening test for colorectal cancer, studies of applying image processing to colonoscopy video are increasing. When performing colonoscopy or applying image processing to colonoscopy video, the presence of a residue in the large intestine is a negative affecting factor. In this reason, the colonoscopist evaluates and records the colon cleanliness after performing colonoscopy. However, these assessments can be influenced by the subjectivity of the colonoscopist. In order to quantify the frequency of residues in the large intestine, we applied image processing and machine learning techniques to the digital images obtained from colonoscopy. Support vector machine technique was applied to distinguish informative frames from colonoscopy videos, and to classify residue frames and the others. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were evaluated for five patients.

Thermal Degradation and Kinetic Study of Cassava Rhizome for Torrefaction Application

Thermal decomposition kinetics of cassava rhizome (CR) is an important key in the torrefaction process. Kinetic analysis of the cassava rhizome torrefaction was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyser in which CR weight loss is measured under nitrogen atmosphere from ambient temperature to 973K at 5, 10, 20, and 30 Kmin−1. Two model-free iso-conversional methods, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) have been used to determine activation energies as a function of the extent of degradation. In this work, the CR particles were separated into 3 study groups, 0.125-0.425 mm, 0.425-0.850, and 0.850-2 mm. The average activation energies calculated by using the methods are relatively similar for all three-particle size samples. The average activation energy values calculated by FWO method were 170.509, 172.593, and 130.149 kJmol−1, respectively. These data were comparable to KAS method in which the average activation energy numbers were 170.647, 177.276, and 128.620 kJmol−1. Both methods indicated that the activation energy was relatively constant until the conversion of 0.5. The pre-exponential factor values from FWO and KAS ranged 4.87E+17 s−1 and 7.28E+14 s−1, respectively. The experimental results show that kinetic parameters from both methods are suitable and effective to help describe the thermal degradation of the cassava rhizome.

Searching for and analysis of bacterial blight resistance genes from Thailand rice germplasm

In Thailand, rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the main food and agricultural product for export. However, the production of rice has faced many problems and bacterial blight disease is one of the problems in rice growing. Bacterial blight resistance Xa4, Xa7, xa5 and xa13 genes were discovered in 155 Thai rice cultivars using polymerase chain reaction-based gene-linked and gene-specific markers and the specific allele was compared with susceptible rice cultivars and with rice carrying each resistance gene. The results showed the same alleles as in the Xa4 resistance gene (89.68%), followed by the Xa7 resistance gene (11.61%), while the same alleles as xa5 and xa13 resistance genes were not found in the Thai rice germplasm studied. A new allele of Xa7 was found and part of the DNA sequence was analyzed and compared to alleles obtained from resistant and susceptible rice lines. Sixteen cultivars carried the same alleles as the Xa4 and Xa7 resistant alleles. Phenotyping of 12 rice cultivars was performed using the leaf-clipping method and inoculation with three isolates of Xoo (TB0002, Xoo5 and Xoo6). Three rice cultivars (Kan Phu Daeng, Phuyai Li and RD23) had resistance to all three Xoo isolates. These cultivars will be useful as genetic sources in rice breeding programs in the future. © 2017 Kasetsart University

Aims:This study aims to evaluate the success of the cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging Academy Berlin's transition from in-person to online CMR imaging training during the global pandemic 2020 and to gather recommendations for future courses. Methods and results:We conducted an online survey targeting CMR course participants from both the pre-pandemic, in-person era and the pandemic, online era of the CMR Academy Berlin. The survey primarily used Likert-type questions to assess participants' experiences and preferences.A total of 61 out of 158 invited participants (38.61%) completed the survey, with 31 (50.82%) being in-person alumni and 30 (49.18%) being online alumni. Both in-person [83.87% (26/31)] and online [83.33% (25/30)] participants rated the course as either 'very good' or 'excellent', and both groups found the course either 'extremely helpful' or 'very helpful'. However, a higher percentage of in-person participants [96.77% (30/31)] felt comfortable asking questions compared to online participants [83.33% (25/30); = 0.025]. The majority in both groups preferred a written exam [total: 75.41% (46/61); in-person alumni: 77.42% (24/31); online alumni 73.33% (22/30)]. In terms of course format preferences, in-person courses were preferred by both in-person alumni [38.71% (12/31)] and online alumni [60% (18/30)], almost as much as a hybrid format combining in-person and online elements [in-person alumni: 41.94% (13/31), online alumni: 30% (9/30)]. Conclusion:The transition from in-person to online CMR training at the CMR Academy Berlin was successful in maintaining overall satisfaction. However, there is room for improvement in terms of increased interaction, particularly for online participants. Future CMR- and potentially also cardiac computer tomography-courses should consider adopting a hybrid format to accommodate participants' preferences and enhance their learning experience, especially to gain level II competency, whereas level I virtual o

Appropriate feeding for early juvenile stages of eunicid polychaete Marphysa sanguinea

Survival rate (SR) and growth rate (GR) were tested with various feed sources to identify an appropriate feed to improve the productivity in the early life stage of the rock worm Marphysa sanguinea (Montagu, 1813) (Eunicidae: Polychaeta). In addition, feed supply rates were also examined. Three experiments were performed to identify the appropriate feed for the juvenile stages of M. sanguinea. Experiment 1 was done using seven different feed sources and without feed as well for the first 20days of M. sanguinea culture. Decapsulated Artemia and extruded pellet for shrimp were showed with high SR and GR in the experiment 1. Experiment 2 was performed with five different feed sources. Two feeds were selected from experiment 1 in addition to eel feed, mixed micro-algae, and benthic diatom. Four different quantities of each feed were supplied to 3000 individuals of early juvenile stage of M. sanguinea. High quantity of decapsulated Artemia and shrimp feed resulted with a relatively good SR and GR. In experiment 3, we provided 20, 50, and 75mg of decapsulated Artemia and shrimp feed to 3000 individuals of M. sanguinea. Our results demonstrated that after 3months, decapsulated Artemia showed high survival rate and 75mg/3000 inds provided the best quantity of feed in the earlier life stage culture of M. sanguinea. © 2017 The Author(s).
