Cross-modality coregistration of functional and anatomical images has rapidly grown as the aid for the interpretation of functional images. Various methods have been previously investigated so that the coregistered images can be easily interpreted and realistically visualized. We used the time/intensityweighted alternation method to display the coregistered images simultaneously. Stereotactic registration was done with two methods. We realized the automated method of alignment using the boundary of head scalp extracted from the sinogram of a PET emission scan and surface-matching algorithm in brain, and the semi-automated method using a paired point-matching algorithm in the chest and abdomen. For the simultaneous display of the stereotactically registered images, rapid switching of the screens were applied on which both images were written with independent color scales. Rapid alternate display of two images, that is synchronized using the monitor scanning process, could induce the fusion of images in the human visual perception system. Also, intensification of an interesting image is possible by weighting the displaying time or global intensities of images with the degree of interest. These techniques could be useful for the interpretation and visualization of the coregistered images. © 1997 The authors.

The ECG recording in the bathtub was studied using insulated electrode. Prior studies of the ECG recording in the bathtub used conductive electrodes having some problems such as the possibility of the electric shock and sensitivity to contamination of the electrode surfaces. The insulated electrodes were made of copper plate coated with PET film. The electrodes were attached on bathtub at both sides of the chest High-input-impedance amplifier was designed to amplify ECG signal sensed by insulated electrodes of high impedance. The recorded signals in this study were noisier than those recorded with conventional conductive electrodes. But the R peaks in the recorded signals were large enough to be auto-detected. Further study will improve SNR by reducing of power line noise and common-mode noise.

A new micro cell chip which can induce stem cells to differentiate into specific body cell types has been designed and fabricated for tissue engineering. This paper presents the fabrication and preliminary test results of a MEMS cell electric stimulator. It provides a new tool of cell electric stimulation, culture and analysis for stem cell research. This study provides the controlling proliferation as well as morphology of human mesenchymal stem cell on the microchip. DC 1V, 5V, 12V, AC 5V, 1 Hz, 1K Hz, 1M Hz were compared with electric stimulation for their impact on the expansion and morphology of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). It provides a new generation of cell culture, stimulation and analysis devices for stem cell research and tissue engineering. © 2007 CBMS.

We have created an artificial neural network based approach for measuring eye movement using a magnetic contact lens sensing technique. The sensor array is based on using four magnetoresistive sensors. A two-layer feed-forward artificial neural network was used and an artificial eyeball model was made for the test. The neural network is trained with sample data obtained from nine spots. After training, we compared the position calculated from the developed system with the real one. The result shows that there is a good linear relationship between them. This indicates the developed system is capable of recording the position of the eyeball with a high degree of accuracy. © 2005 IEEE.

While the number of patients suffering from acute and chronic renal failure has been steadily increasing every year, the mortality rate is not improving. For the purpose of improvement on the quality of life and mortality of renal disease patients, we employ the hemofiltration principle to treat the end-stage renal disease patients. Hemofiltration equipment can be installed without additional plumbing and electrical power construction;operated only with several pre-packaged fluid bags without a huge water treatment facility. This paper describes the development of portable renal treatment equipment based on hemofiltration treatment, Carry-on Pulse Artificial Kidney (C-PAK), and reports the results of animal test using the equipment. The web-based remote monitor/control system for C-PAK is introduced also. We expect that our portable hemofiltration device for chronic renal failure patient would be an alternative for conventional hemodialysis machine and a solution to home renal treatment.

This paper suggests a new method to compensate perspective error in measuring real size of pupil of pupillography for pupil light response. To get real size of pupil, the distance between cornea and camera should be calculated. The glints on the eye of the image were used to estimate the distance. The suggested method was validated using telecentric lens. © 2006 ACM.

The studies of ECG measurement on the toilet seat have been performed specifically for the ubiquitous health care. Instead of the mainly used dry electrodes having several problems such as the electrical safety or the environmental stability, we used the capacitively-coupled insulated electrodes, which were composed of the Cu plate and the PTFE film for the measurement. The bio-signal sensed with the insulated electrodes was measured through the ultra-high input impedance system including OPA111 having the common mode impedance of 1014 Ω. As the result of measuring the signal, with the electrical ground on the neck or the hand, the R-peaks were detected very positively. However, without the electrical ground on the body, we could detect the heartbeat signal, a kind of the motion artifacts by the variation of the blood vessel volume. It seems that this heartbeat signal can be also used as the important parameter like the R-peaks for the HRV (heart rate variability) analysis. In addition, it is thought that, without the directly electrical ground, the R-peak detection will be possible by the improvement of the SNR with the active common canceling system.

We developed an integrated home telemedicine system equipped with automatic diagnosis and consultation function for patients with chronic disease such as cardiac disease, respiratory disease, diabetes and hypertension. The system measures standard 12ch ECG, respiratory function, blood glucose level and noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP). The measured data were stored on the system and transmitted to the central server everyday through the internet. The system performed automatic diagnosis at every measurement and offered medical consultation to the patient If there was any abnormality in the diagnostic result, the system gave a real time alarm to the healthcare center for adequate teleconsultation or medical service. We have installed the developed system on an apartment for the performance evaluation and confirmed the possibility of the system as an effective tool for the telemedicine. © 2003 IEEE.

In male reproducible health and fertility and IVF (in-vitro fertilization), morphological analysis of sperm has been most important. But the traditional tools for semen analysis are subjective, imprecise, inaccurate, difficult to standardize, and reproduce mainly due to their manually oriented operations. The purpose of morphological analysis of sperm is to microscopically type-classify sperm according to their morphological characteristics of heads. Until now, the strict criteria method has long been used in clinic to discriminate normal sperm from abnormal. This method cannot classify the diverse groups of abnormal sperm in detail and shows large variations in inter-operators and intra-operator. In this paper, we have studied a new method of sperm morphological classification using artificial neural networks that are widely used in pattern recognition and image processing. With a multi-layer perceptron trained by the error back-propagation algorithm, profile features from digitized sperm images were classified into four classes that consisted of one normal group and three abnormal groups according to their morphological characteristics. © 1998 IMIA.
