Frequency‐Driven Self‐Organized Helical Superstructures Loaded with Mesogen‐Grafted Silica Nanoparticles

Adding colloidal nanoparticles into liquid‐crystal media has become a promising pathway either to enhance or to introduce novel properties for improved device performance. Here we designed and synthesized new colloidal hybrid silica nanoparticles passivated with a mesogenic monolayer on the surface to facilitate their organo‐solubility and compatibility in a liquid‐crystal host. The resulting nanoparticles were identified by 1 H NMR spectroscopy, TEM, TGA, and UV/Vis techniques, and the hybrid nanoparticles were doped into a dual‐frequency cholesteric liquid‐crystal host to appraise both their compatibility with the host and the effect of the doping concentration on their electro‐optical properties. Interestingly, the silica‐nanoparticle‐doped liquid‐crystalline nanocomposites were found to be able to dynamically self‐organize into a helical configuration and exhibit multi‐stability, that is, homeotropic (transparent), focal conic (opaque), and planar states (partially transparent), depending on the frequency applied at sustained low voltage. Significantly, a higher contrast ratio between the transparent state and scattering state was accomplished in the nanoparticle‐embedded liquid‐crystal systems.

A rapid antibiotic susceptibility test (AST) is desperately needed in clinical settings for fast and appropriate antibiotic administration. Traditional ASTs, which rely on cell culture, are not suitable for urgent cases of bacterial infection and antibiotic resistance owing to their relatively long test times. Here, we describe a novel AST called single-cell morphological analysis (SCMA) that can determine antimicrobial susceptibility by automatically analyzing and categorizing morphological changes in single bacterial cells under various antimicrobial conditions. The SCMA was tested with four Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute standard bacterial strains and 189 clinical samples from hospitals. The results were compared with the gold standard broth microdilution test. The SCMA results were obtained in less than 4 hours with 91.5% categorical agreement and 6.51% minor, 2.56% major, and 1.49% very major discrepancies. Thus, SCMA provides rapid and accurate antimicrobial susceptibility data.

Non-invasive electrical brain stimulation has shown potential utility as a treatment for seizures in epilepsy patients. Transcranial focal stimulation (TFS) via tripolar concentric ring electrodes (TCREs) has been effective in reducing seizure severity in acute rodent models, but it has yet to be determined whether or not it will serve as a viable long-term treatment strategy. Prior experiments indicate that a single dose of TFS via TCRE does not impact short- or long-term memory formation. The present study investigated if five daily doses of TFS via a TCRE on the scalp affected the memory. The spontaneous object recognition (SOR) test was used to evaluate the memory. Sham and TFS-treated groups were evaluated and both showed comparable levels of preference for novel objects, indicating successful memory formation. More work on repeated dosage strategies is important for establishing the safety and efficacy of TFS as a putative treatment.

In this paper, a comprehensive study of the downlink performance in a heterogeneous cellular network (or hetnet) is conducted. A general hetnet model is considered consisting of an arbitrary number of open-access and closed-access tier of base stations (BSs) arranged according to independent homogeneous Poisson point processes. The BSs of each tier have a constant transmission power, random fading coefficient with an arbitrary distribution and arbitrary path-loss exponent of the power-law path-loss model. For such a system, analytical characterizations for the coverage probability and average rate at an arbitrary mobile-station (MS), and average per-tier load are derived for the max-SINR connectivity model. Using stochastic ordering, interesting properties and simplifications for the hetnet downlink performance are derived by relating this connectivity model to the maximum instantaneous received power (MIRP) connectivity model, providing good insights about the hetnets and the downlink performance in these complex networks. Furthermore, the results also demonstrate the effectiveness and analytical tractability of the stochastic geometric approach to study the hetnet performance. © 2014 IFIP.

This paper proposes an efficient architecture for FPGA implementation of MGS-QRD in MIMO wireless communication systems. The proposed architecture is based on the Hardware/Software (HW/SW) design. To achieve the efficient architecture, the systolic architecture is applied to MGS-QRD and then the conventional QR triangular array of (2m 2 +2m+1) cells onto a linear architecture of m+1 cell is employed to reduce the number of required QR processors. The reduced cells are constructed with a number of basic processing elements such as multipliers and adders etc. The basic elements are constructed by HW architectures. The SW of PowerPC core is used to control to achieve the QR decomposition. In this paper, utilization resource and operation performance in term of equivalent gates and operating cycles are shown.

This paper presents an automatic stress-relieving music recommendation system (ASMRS) for individual music listeners. The ASMRS uses a portable, wireless photoplethysmography module with a finger-type sensor, and a program that translates heartbeat signals from the sensor to the stress index. The sympathovagal balance index (SVI) was calculated from heart rate variability to assess the user's stress levels while listening to music. Twenty-two healthy volunteers participated in the experiment. The results have shown that the participants' SVI values are highly correlated with their prespecified music preferences. The sensitivity and specificity of the favorable music classification also improved as the number of music repetitions increased to 20 times. Based on the SVI values, the system automatically recommends favorable music lists to relieve stress for individuals.
