This paper considers the problem of channel reservation schemes for reservation-based MAC protocols with different priorities in wireless communication networks. A framework for designing such channel reservation protocols based on p-persistent is introduced. This framework allows us to explore several different prioritization mechanisms which are devised to serve different prioritization policies or requirements. This leads to the development of five channel reservation schemes, namely, FPT+MP, FPT+MLT, FPT+SCS, FPT+PCP and FPT+HFF. The average number of successful reservations for users of different priorities is evaluated as a primary performance measure. Unlike other previous works where different priorities exhibit strict differentiation, our success ratio (γ) is defined to illustrate how much different priorities are differentiated. In doing so, we seek for a channel reservation scheme that can satisfy the required γ, while maximizing the channel utilization. Numerical results show that the combined scheme of FPT+MP and FPT+SCS schemes is the most effective scheme, possessing all desirable key features. © 2012 IEEE.

We analyze a cognitive radio network where the primary users (PUs) and cognitive radio (CR) devices are distributed over the two-dimensional plane according to two independent homogeneous Poisson processes. Any CR that lies within the detection region of some PU switches to a different channel in order to prevent causing harmful interference at the PU. Using the concepts of stochastic geometry, we study the characteristics of the interference caused by the PUs and the CRs to a given PU. Further, these results are used to obtain tight upper and lower bounds for the success probability at the PU;defined as the probability that the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is beyond a certain operating threshold. © 2012 IFIP.

Dielectric metamaterials offer a potential low-loss alternative to plasmonic metamaterials at optical frequencies. However, demonstrations of dielectric metamaterials have so far been limited to microwave and mid-infrared frequencies. In this work, we outline the development of purely dielectric zero-index metamaterials operating at optical frequencies. The metamaterial, formed from silicon rods, exhibits impedance matching with air, resulting in unity transmission at the zero-index point. Design and experimental realization of the metamaterials is presented. The metamaterials can potentially be used for a number of applications including compact lens systems, directional emitters, and transformation optics devices. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a smart antenna system using a combination of nonconventional least square (NCLS) optimization and direct data domain least square (D3LS) for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and beamforming, respectively. In the proposed system, NCLS optimization is utilized to estimate DOA of incoming signal first. The estimated DOA is then assisted for initial processing of D3LS in beamforming. The performance in term of estimated signal amplitude and estimated DOA of the proposed system is evaluated via simulations. © 2012 IEEE.

A smart antenna was proposed to improve wireless communication systems. The smart antenna may comprises direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and/or adaptive antenna. The DOA estimation technique is used to estimate direction of transmitted signals. An adaptive antenna has ability of suppressing undesired signals namely interference or jammers in specific directions while receive only the desired one. There are a number of methods proposed to conduct in such way, including multiple signal classification (MUSIC), least mean squares (LMS), sample matrix inversion (SMI), recursive least squares (RLS), and their derivative forms as seen in the literatures in [1]. These methods require a training sequence or known information for adaptation and/or DOA estimation. Although a constant modulus algorithm (CMA) was proposed without the need of training sequence, it has a slow convergence. © 2012 IEICE.

In this paper, we consider the downlink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) analysis in a heterogeneous cellular network with K tiers. Each tier is characterized by a base-station (BS) arrangement according to a homogeneous Poisson point process with certain BS density, transmission power, random shadow fading factors with arbitrary distribution, arbitrary path-loss exponent and a certain bias towards admitting the mobile-station (MS). The MS associates with the BS that has the maximum instantaneous biased received power under the open access cell association scheme. For such a general setting, we provide an analytical characterization of the coverage probability at the MS.
