The pedagogical position of this paper is that making at full-scale is not simply a means to an end, but is actually a powerful design tool that can provide specific feedback distinct from other modes of design inquiry. Particularly at the scale of the detail, the process of enabling the simultaneity of design and construction as a technique can illuminate and reveal the forces of mind and hand working together, embedding tectonic (The word tectonic used here refers to Eduard Sekler’s definition, as that which “…cannot be described by construction and structure alone. For these qualities, which are expressive of a relation of form to force, the term tectonic should be reserved.” This definition is distinguished from a Semperian understanding of tectonics, as pertaining exclusively to the frame and lightweight linear construction.) (Sekler, 1) qualities directly in the work itself. Instead of moving from general to particular; from abstract idea to physical manifestation, we begin with the physically constructed material joint as a generative origin. Detail Machines can facilitate an embodied and haptic mode of learning through making that connects students to materials and techniques of construction through active experimentation. This is in marked contrast to the highly abstract and codified representational tools and exceedingly scenographic techniques typically deployed in architectural design today.

In contrast to the modern urban planning, which can be done in short period in terms of the spatial qualified design, the traditional tribe needs longer period in terms of the villagers' sense of community. The selection of location, planning, and construction reveals the wisdom of the former people's use of the resourceful life experience. First, the paper employs PHOENICS to simulate the wind environments of two most representative patterns of rural settlements in the southern area of Southern Fujian, China. This was made to compare the different conditions caused by settlements of various architectural groups. Second, the engineering and construction aspects of settlements-such as the width of roads and building structures-will be further analyzed and examined as case study in attempt to discover the favorable environmental factors for generating winds as well as the construction dimension of the settlement, such as the road width and the architectural design. Finally, the paper tends to conclude with an energy conservation strategy applied to the construction of modern communities which has low density and small group buildings.

This article examines the history of Kharaghoda, an important site of colonial salt extraction located on the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat. It highlights relationships between development and ecology through analysis of colonial documents published between 1872 and 1940. The intention at Kharaghoda was to enforce colonial political agendas through the construction of infrastructure on what was seen as an empty site. However, contrary to a tabula rasa condition, records suggest a complex relationship with site ecologies. In particular, nature was not uniformly sublimated by the project, but exerted influence on a rapidly fluctuating built environment. The article presents developments thematically, with each investigating the archives and corresponding developments chronologically. By foregrounding the ecological voice within the archives it advocates for a definition of modern heritage that recognizes interactions between nature and built environments to suggest future possibilities for conservation acknowledging human and nonhuman agencies.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is not a novel concept, but there is a growing interest in design collaboration using BIM for construction management in the AEC industry. Recently, mobile computing and augmented reality (AR) become new variations on desktop computers since the combination can create ubiquitous workspaces for practices by providing seamless interactions between the digital and physical worlds in the context of the real world. This paper introduces the a potential of MAR for design collaboration in the AEC industry by associating the concept of BIM with mobile computing and AR. Firstly, this paper reviews MAR and the concept of embodied interaction for understanding interactive experiences in collaborative environment and then illustrates the construction management process in MAR with BIM in the context of interdisciplinary collaboration. Two aspects of MAR technology are critical to the management process supports. Mobility enables seamless access to a shared workspace and team members without time and location constraints and the context-awareness in AR allows fluid interaction with shared representation immersed in context. Based on the understandings of MAR and BIM, we develop scenarios of MAR for the intelligent construction management in order to address the implications of the MAR on the future development of collaborative systems.

Despite the well-known nature of Medellin as an innovative city there is little evidence regarding the impact of its mass transit systems on cadastral values. We examined the extensions of the Light-Rail Transit (LRT) system on cadastral values between 2007 and 2019 through a difference in difference research design looking at the effects of the announcement, construction and starting of operations milestones of the project. Our research findings suggest that the expansion of the city’s transportation network, with the LRT project, has premiums on the cadastral values. We found positive effects between 0.3 % and 1.2 % between 2017 and 2019, after the beginning of commercial operations in 2016. Based on our findings we discussed the implications for transportation and urban development policies in cities implementing LRT systems.
