This paper gathers the results of a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), employing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) to show the most effective climate-adaptive strategies and their functional correlations and also potential research gaps. Additionally, it aims to identify various factors that influence vernacular-built environments. The focus is on the role of vernacular built environments in achieving thermal comfort for occupants and the potential contribution of energy-saving techniques to future building design. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Brands use logos to reflect their identities and convey their company character to target customers. Logos not only represent brand value but also provide various information about brands. Companies aiming to emphasize sustainable brand value also seek to showcase this aspect in their logos. Therefore, sustainable brand design and development are preferred. The focus of this research is on sustainable brand development through Artificial Intelligence-supported logo design and developing a decision support system for selecting the best logo among Artificial Intelligence-generated logos. In this study, Artificial Intelligence-supported logo design is explained, and the Multi Attribute Group Decision Making approach is adopted for identifying the best logo among the obtained logos. The Picture Fuzzy - Weights by Envelope and Slope - Alternative Ranking using Two-Step Logarithmic Normalization hybrid method is proposed for logo decision-making, combining the Weights by Envelope and Slope criterion weighting method using picture fuzzy sets with Alternative Ranking using Two-Step Logarithmic Normalization alternative ranking methods. Additionally, the Picture Fuzzy Yager Weighted Average aggregation operator based on Yager t-norm and t-conorm operations is employed. The steps of the hybrid method are outlined, and its algorithm is formulated. To test the applicability and robustness of the algorithm, sustainable logo design for an architectural firm is developed and executed as a real-case study. The research concludes that Artificial Intelligence-supported sustainable logo design can be achieved, and the hybrid method can support determining the best logo based on expert opinions. Based on the research findings, the hybrid method is recommended for sustainable logo design and selection.

Comparison of high temperature hot corrosion behavior of AlCoCrFeNiTi and AlCoCrFeNiZr high entropy alloy (HEAs) coatings

Composite coating technologies used in the aircraft industry are susceptible to hot corrosion damage caused by substandard fuels and harsh environmental conditions. In this context, it is crucial to evaluate the hot corrosion resistance of coating systems and to study the microstructural changes. Recent research has focused on the hot corrosion damage behavior of high entropy alloy (HEAs) coatings in the aircraft industry. In this study, two different HEA coating systems were designed by applying CoNiCrAlY powder, AlCoCrFeNiTi and AlCoCrFeNiZr HEA powders to an Inconel 718 substrate using two thermal spray coating techniques (high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) and atmospheric plasma spray (APS)). Then, in order to investigate the microstructural changes in the coatings, a salt mixture of 45 % Na2SO4 and 55 % V2O5 was placed on the surface of the coatings and subjected to isothermal hot corrosion experiments at 900 °C for 1, 3, 5 and 10 h. Both coating systems exhibited outstanding stability, strength and increased corrosion resistance under high temperature, extremely corrosive conditions, and the damage effect in needle/rod-like hot corrosion was dominated by the formation of Co2VO4 compound as a corrosion product. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Changing architectural practice paradigms and their implications for professional education

The intent of this paper is twofold: to reflect on the architectural profession's varied responses to changes that occurred in the business environment over the last half of this century and to explicate key curricular concepts that educators can engage in the development and implementation of informed architectural pedagogy that acknowledges strategic responses that were initiated by practitioners in order to gain market advantage. Of fundamental concern is the gradual change irt market demand for architectural services that began in the early 1960s and became more pronounced due to prevailing economic pressures during the early 1990s. This change, still in progress, impacts architectural education because it is being fueled by mt increasing demand for architectural services that are integral to strategic management-dependent project delivery systems in contrast to traditional creative design-dependent approaches to building design. Because in a chain of events education models incorporate concern for progressive and viable practice models, this paper examines the changing contexts of professional practice and recent developments in methods of project delivery, which are causing a fundamental restructuring or paradigm shift within the profession of architecture. The implications of consequentially emerging practice paradigms for professional education are also considered by exploring means by which corresponding relationships between these can be enhanced.

This study reviews the design of the physical environment within a residence that is suitable for comfortable and safe elderly living. Various guidelines and knowledge are available, yet there remains a lack of knowledge that focuses on design that leads to mental happiness. This research studies and analyzes the spiritual factors affecting the living environment of elderly Thais. The study then proposes a guideline to design spiritual living environments for the Thai elderly. The population and target groups are elderly people in Roi Et, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, and Kalasin provinces in Thailand. Data was collected from in-depth interviews and a questionnaire survey. The results reveal that lifestyle changes in the homes of Thai elderly people have led to them placing importance on spiritual spaceswithin their homes. Moreover, the design of a religious space or prayer room within a dwelling is influenced by social characteristics (income and education) as well as physical characteristics (walk-mobility and smell) affecting.

Evaluating daylighting effectiveness of a traditional house in tropical climate

Sustainable Day lighting is crucial for enhancing visual comfort indoors, which helps to reduce energy consumption on artificial lighting and so improves the psychological well-being of the residents. Various research on sustainable daylighting have been undertaken, but little emphasis has been placed on vernacular architecture, which is the outcome of hundreds of years of optimisation in creating a comfortable shelter utilising accessible materials and established construction techniques. This climate responsive design is being lost to universal architecture in emerging countries such as India owing to modernity. Therefore, this paper tries to evaluate the performance of sustainable day lighting techniques of four different typologies of roofs of traditional houses in Tamil Nadu, India. The study qualitatively and quantitatively examines the climate, geographical location and evaluates the total number of door and window openings and calculates the Window to wall ratio, uniformity ratio, threshold values and average daylight factor. The Quantitative evaluation has been carried out using simulation (design BUILDER) and experimental method (Illuminance meter) for all the four typologies. The study found that the Wind catcher houses, courtyard houses and clear storey houses achieved visual comfort than the Tiled roof houses. However, Clerestory house achieves the needed threshold value and average daylight factor with uniform spread of daylighting thereby achieving visual comfort without glare. Thus, this study will help us to identify the best typology in terms of achieving visual comfort and the final recommendations will be used by the architects to create sustainable day lighting strategies in modern buildings using solutions from vernacular houses which is usually a deserted area of research. © 2022

Use of artificial neural networks in architecture: determining the architectural style of a building with a convolutional neural networks

The discussion of "can machines think?" which started with the invention of the modern computer, brought along the question of "can machines design?" by researchers in the design field. These developments in information technologies have also affected the architecture. Artificial intelligence applications are encountered in many areas such as pricing estimation, energy conservation security systems of buildings, ventilation systems, user-oriented interactive design solutions, computer-aided programs used in the plan production phase and design process. When the literature on artificial intelligence applications in the architecture is reviewed, it can be seen that it generally includes shape grammars, graph theory, decision trees, constraint-based models, machine learning methods, RNN (Recursive Neural Networks), CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) and GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) algorithms. In this study, the use of artificial intelligence algorithms in architecture was examined, and an example was designed to determine the architectural structures of different periods by using CNN (Convolutional Neural Network). In the study, the open source TensorFlow library developed by Google and the Python programming language were used. Employing a statistical approach and utilizing convolutional neural networks (CNNs), a study has successfully classified the current flow patterns of buildings based on datasets comprising facades of Gothic, Modern, and Deconstructivist architectural styles. The findings demonstrate the efficacy of CNNs in accurately distinguishing the intricate details of diverse architectural styles. Recognizing elements from different periods using the CNN algorithm can examine not only individual buildings but also the relationship of buildings with their environments. Inclusivity of virtual tourism destinations: An immersive netnographic study of Indonesian wheelchair users in virtual nature-based destinations

Exclusion-inclusion theory has received attention in various disciplines in the actual world. However, whether and how virtual tourism experiences can affect the degree of exclusion-inclusion for people who use wheelchairs has not been discussed. Driven by an interpretivist paradigm, this study employed immersive netnography. Ten Indonesian were observed and interviewed to understand their virtual nature-based experiences. They used virtual reality head month and explored a few virtual destinations. The findings suggest that the combination of virtual tourism destinations' aspects can influence the inclusivity of their travel experiences. A better understanding of these findings will aid in developing inclusive tourism for wheelchair users through virtual tourism. This paper provides insights into the current and future scope of inclusive e-tourism. © 2025 The Authors

The Wintergarden

Places, spaces, or spatial experiences are sometimes described as "magical" (The word is used here in its colloquial sense, with no supernatural connotations.) Their magic, however, is closely tied to their period, for that which is enchanting to one generation may seem banal to the next. The article explores a spatial typology - the wintergarden - and suggests that over the years it has taken on many forms, each of which seemed, in its time, to possess qualities that made it a site of fascination. As a device through which to discuss this, the ephemeral spatial enchantment of each wintergarden in its heyday is considered in relation to the magical effects that are created in conjuring. Professional conjurors suggest that there are a limited number of basic "feats" of entertainment magic, in which the things that happen appear to go beyond the boundaries of what is normally possible and are hence felt to be "magical" All magical effects are composed from combinations of these basic feats. Conjurors emphasize, however;that magic happens in the mind of the audience, and that magic works by playing on things that the audience feels to be significant, and worth attending to. Behind the magic of conjuring lies science, but also attention, so that the feeling that something is "magical" is related both to the changing technologies of its times and the culture of the society that is thrilled by it at that moment. When the wintergardens are examined in relation to the conjurors' feats, they reveal ideas or aspirations that had heightened significance for their audiences - at that period. The article considers a range of wintergardens at their moment of glory By suggesting that the wintergarden continues to be a compelling concept whose new forms reflect the mood of the moment, the article offers another approach to the relations between interior discourses and other histories.

Influence of balcony greenery on indoor temperature reduction in tropical urban residential buildings

Urbanization poses significant challenges, including strain on infrastructure, environmental degradation from increased resource consumption and pollution, and climatic impacts like the urban heat island phenomenon, which contributes to elevated city temperatures. Urban greenery effectively reduces urban heat stress; however, space constraints often limit implementation. This study uses experimental measurements and simulation analysis to examine the impact of residential greenery on indoor temperature regulation in a three-storey apartment in a tropical region. Experimental data were collected from a north-facing balcony with plants, measuring air temperature and humidity during the peak dry season. The residential greenery showed lower temperatures than the reference one. The most significant indoor temperature difference was 2.5 °C with a combination of potted plants and a living wall, followed by 1.0 °C for the living wall and 0.8 °C for the potted plants alone. A simulation study on seasonal and orientation indicated that the living wall was most effective for cooling in the west and east during the dry season, reducing surface temperatures by up to 4.5 °C and 4.3 °C, respectively. They helped regulate wet season temperatures in the north, reducing them by 2.6 °C. One-sided balcony enclosures with 75 % living wall coverage were most efficient in enhancing natural ventilation and cooling on lower floors, while upper floors experienced higher temperatures. The findings highlight the impact of residential greenery on thermal comfort by reducing indoor temperatures, demonstrating its potential as a viable solution for enhancing urban green spaces amid urbanization challenges.
