This study presents a novel approach to integrating combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems with water desalination for enhanced energy and water management in educational buildings. Two distinct layouts for CCHP and desalination systems are introduced: one prioritizing efficient power generation to meet electricity demands while providing waste heat for desalination, and the other focusing on balancing cooling and heating loads alongside water desalination. Both layouts are tailored to meet the building's energy and water demands while considering operational efficiency. Optimization of these layouts against traditional systems using the bat search algorithm emphasizes economic viability and the gas engine's operational flexibility, which are crucial for partial load operation. In addition, an environmental assessment compares the proposed CCHP-desalination systems with conventional setups, assessing CO2 emission reductions and overall sustainability. The evaluation encompasses key environmental metrics, such as resource consumption and the integration of renewable energy sources. Results highlight significant CO2 emission reductions across various gas engine capacities, with notable enhancements in economic and environmental performance achieved by selecting a 3,250 kW gas engine within the CCHP-desalination system. This choice not only maximizes the annual profit but also reduces CO2 emissions by 57% compared to conventional systems, underscoring the system's sustainability benefits.

Our study designed to examine associations between factors of indoor air pollutants and reporting sick building syndromes (SBS) from employees of large air-conditioned office buildings. Three hundred and twelve participants from eight office buildings have returned their questionnaires. By using principle component analysis, night indoor variables with "airborne" nature were then found clustered into 4 major components according to the loadings of these variables, explaining about 88% of the variance for individual variables of interest. Microbial contamination seemed to be associated with increasing risk of reporting irritating symptoms, especially for dry, itching skin, and fatigued eyes (OR=7.87 and 2.88), and increasing risk of reporting neurotoxic symptoms, such as unusual fatigue (OR= 3.90). Our findings suggest the immediate regulation of microbial contamination in indoor building environments, and further research is needed to explore the associations between high levels of microbial exposure and corresponding health implications.

A popular and intuitive way to capture the quality of life in cities is by evaluating ‘livability.’ This study aims to gain insight on the types, importance, and availability of skills needed to develop livable cities, as perceived by researchers and practitioners. Participants in a separate concept mapping project were asked to provide a list of the skills they found most important to the development of livable cities. Responses were synthesized into broader categories. Survey respondents most referenced Collaboration, Communication, and Community Engagement. In a second phase, respondents were asked to select those that they felt were most important. Collaboration and Community Engagement were the two most frequently selected skills in the second phase. Results were compared against competency requirements for program accreditation in the fields of Public Health, Urban Planning, architecture, Landscape architecture, and Parks and Recreation Administration. All are vital partners in livable city development. Further trends, similarities, and differences are discussed. This study underscores the enduring need for ‘soft skills,’ non-traditional approaches to education and workforce development, and the increasing relevance of team science. Understanding the skills needed for livable city development helps ensure researchers and practitioners are equipped to participate. © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

This research study aimed to investigate the characteristics of the Spectral Energy Ratios (SER) determined from the Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the spoken speech samples used to represent the severity level of emotional illness such as Depression in quantitative measure. Situation could be getting worst for a person who suffers from such illness with the elevated severity of symptom. When the symptom of severe depression strikes, a depressive person might be at high risk of committing suicide. The prevention of suicide is necessary for depressed persons to save life by admitting them in time and providing the proper treatment under supervision of clinical specialist. Prediction is primarily one of the most important tasks in the prevention of life-Threatening risk from suicide. Researcher has attempted to adapt the speech processing techniques into a clinical diagnosis of emotional illness. In this study a full-band energy and further several sub-band energies estimated from the four frequency bands with each 625-Hz bandwidth were computationally extracted from the categorized speech samples and consequently formed the parameter models for classifications. As result shown, the averaged value of correct classification was obtained to be effectively approximate 80%, when training and validating classifiers with 35% and 65% of the extracted SER features, respectively. © 2019 IEEE.

This paper introduces the studies and experience learned in district cooling project development in developed countries and adaptation process in India for city-level rapid assessment. There are five pilot Indian cities chosen to go through all the process of rapid assessment so as to outline the barriers, challenges, and potential to develop high energy-efficient district cooling system. The paper also instructs the tech-eco analysis tools for rapid assessment, which is developed by the UNEP District Energy in Cities Initiative and adapted in India. The study aims to investigate participants' aesthetic experience in response to environments with curvilinear boundaries that are presented in two different virtual environments (VEs), namely immersive (IVE) and desktop-based virtual environments (DTVE). To this end, 60 participants were presented with 360 degrees 32 VE visualizations that had either horizontal or vertical curvilinear boundaries and possessed various architectural properties (size/light/texture/color) using a head-mounted display and a desktop computer. The aesthetic experience in response to these visualizations was measured in terms of the three key dimensions identified in a previous study (Elver Boz et al., 2022): familiarity, excitement, and fascination. In addition, participants' sense of presence in the two different environments was measured. The results show that familiarity and excitement dimensions were significantly higher in IVE than in DTVE, whereas the two environments did not significantly differ from each other in terms of the fascination dimension. As for the boundary types, the familiarity dimension was significantly higher in horizontal curvilinear boundaries than in vertical ones. In contrast, excitement and fascination dimensions were significantly higher in vertical curvilinear boundaries than in horizontal ones. The only dimension that showed an interaction between boundary types and the type of VE was excitement. Finally, IVE induced a higher presence feeling than DTVE. Overall, results suggest that people's aesthetic experiences toward built environments change as a function of the boundary types and the medium they are presented with these environments and that different dimensions of the aesthetic experience are affected differently by these variables.

This paper describes the results of measurements taken in a number of step wells, well houses, and bath houses in northern India, between March and April 1995. There is a discussion of the combination of thermally massive structures and evaporative cooling effects which characterise the buildings (some of which are over 500 years old). In recent years, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) becomes one of the most suitable solutions to fulfil world primary eco-friendly energy demand. Consequently, bunkering ship is designed to charge liquefied gas with the increasing need for natural gas. Due to the extremely dangerous and cryogenic cargo, the design of LNG bunkering ship requires very high-level structural design/analysis technologies rather than conventional ships. Therefore, this paper describes a general procedure of the structural safety assessment for the independent type C tank of LNG bunkering ship. To meet the recently-established net zero target by 2070 in India, national electricity grid needs to be rapidly decarbonised using renewables. This requires a deeper understanding of the timing and peak periods of residential electricity use which is expected to increase by five times by 2032. This paper uses statistical clustering techniques to develop representative daily electricity use profiles and determine peak periods of electricity use in the summer, monsoon and winter seasons, using time-series data. Smart meters recorded electricity use data at 30 seconds for 9-11 months (2018) across 89 urban dwellings in India representing different climatic zones. About 54 out of 89 dwellings owned at least one air-conditioning (AC) unit. An unsupervised clustering technique was used to group electricity use curves with similar patterns using a combination of hierarchical and k-means algorithm, to characterise the diurnal and seasonal variations. The maximum point difference was used to identify the daily peak usage period. Three distinct clusters emerged. The first cluster with largely AC dwellings had a prolonged night time peak of the highest magnitude, while the second cluster had a mix of AC/non-AC dwellings and experienced a late evening peak. The third cluster with predominantly non-AC dwellings experienced a short morning peak of lowest magnitude. The duration and magnitude of peak periods in the two AC clusters were different, indicating use of multiple AC units. Seasonal variation in electricity use was prevalent at the sample (89 dwellings) and sub-sample (54 AC dwellings) level. Mean daily electricity use of AC dwellings (n:54) in the summer and monsoon seasons was found to be around 13kWh/day which was twice that of non-AC dwellings (n:35, 6.4kWh/day). For AC dwellings mean daily electricity use in the cooling season (summer and monsoon) was double that of the non-cooling season (winter), while such seasonal variation was subtle in non-AC dwellings. Workplace agility is emerging as the highest priority for the providers of workplace services and infrastructure. ‘Agility’ means continuously improving work and the infrastructure that enables it. An agile workplace is one that is constantly transforming, adjusting and responding to organisational learning. Agility requires a dynamic relationship between work and the workplace and the tools of work. In that relationship the workplace becomes an integral part of work itself ‐ enabling work, shaping it and being shaped by it.
