Urban design education research increasingly acknowledges the crucial need to create partnerships and col-laborations with relevant stakeholders to support urban environments' planning, governance, design, and decision-making processes in the most holistic manner. However, an inclusive and sustainable urban environ-ment does not have the same meaning for every city, making its design more challenging. The sensory spatial qualities of cities are complex and depend on many social, economic, political, cultural, and natural factors. Thus, this study explores the role of the urban living lab (ULL) methodology in designing inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient urban environments in a graduate design studio course. In this study, the ULL was more than a lab. It opened up the critical awareness of multiple links between research, experience, and practice in land use policy. This ULL pedagogical approach could be replicated in different urban contexts to support the decision and design phase of the land use policy process.

This research aims to curate an alternative quality testing method source for local biofuel extraction projects and to make quality testing more accessible for homegrown fuel makers. Alternative quality testing methods allow the layman to test the extracted crude fuel and determine whether it can be purposed further or even tested further to be purposed. A total of 5 tests were conducted and the results were analyzed and recorded to help local biofuel extraction projects to compare their test results. This also helps the locally produced biofuel meet regulatory standards which ensures safe purpose ensured avoids putting lives at risk due to fuel with poor standards.

The most common concern expressed by the public regarding aggregate mining is the negative aesthetic impact the activity has upon the scenic quality of the landscape. It is important that rehabilitation efforts restore scenic quality as well as function to the post-mining landscape. To this end the Management of Abandoned Aggregate Properties (MAAP) program rehabilitates ten to twenty-fives sites in Ontario annually, based upon the criteria of safely, aesthetic, ecological and economic concerns. This study assesses the public's visual preference for different aggregate property naturalization designs. To investigate this relationship, computer-modeled rehabilitation designs of an aggregate properly were developed using landscape modeling software to simulate three-dimensional development over a fifteen year time period. Respondent groups evaluated how natural, rehabilitated, attractive they perceived the simulations to be and assigned a rank order to the eight design strategies from best to worst. design alternatives are shown to improve the perception of aggregate rehabilitation efforts over the current methods being commonly employed by MAAP.

Visual information acquisition is essential for our daily lives, with vision relying on the presence of light. Lighting systems serve the fundamental purpose of enabling vision. This study aims to contribute to sustainable architectural design by emphasizing the efficient utilization of natural daylight. Specifically, the design of skylights or light wells in low-lateral-area, deep-depth structures is of significant importance. While current design criteria consider skylight dimensions and the skylight-to-building height ratio, these factors alone may not suffice for optimal skylight design. To achieve an appropriate lighting and architectural design for such structures, it is essential to evaluate the factors influencing the required amount of daylight on different floors. This study aims to investigate the impact of skylights and light wells on the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of a four-storey building located in Hail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The physical parameters of skylights and light wells were analyzed, taking into account various aspects that affect the amount of light reaching different levels. The findings highlight the significant influence of skylight size on the light reaching the building's floors. For square skylights, reducing the well index (increasing skylight size) exponentially increases the daylight factor. Furthermore, this study evaluates the annual energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions of the building, considering the daylighting factor. The results demonstrate that skylights contribute to increased solar heat gain, thermal conductance, and artificial lighting efficiency. Notably, as the lighting factor of the building increases from 3% to 6%, there is an annual decrease of 3% in CO2 emissions.
This study is aimed at developing an artificial neural network (ANN)-based temperature control method for buildings with a double skin envelope. For this objective, logic for controlling the opening conditions of inle...

The intimate relationship of the designer and the client has led me to a parallel practice of investigating the built form of biography. The notion of working with biography is a device for avoiding willful design. It provides a conceptual guidance to make decisions. The medium that has been used is "furniture," which is a smaller and more direct vehicle for ideas than architectural space.

Light pollution is part of the contemporary environmental crisis that threatens directly and indirectly humans and biodiversity. This phenomenon has been deteriorating the last years. Scientists have given the last decades prominence to the need for proper urban lighting design, including buildings’ façade lighting, that causes less light pollution and energy consumption. Based on the available literature and research, façade lighting significantly contributes to the increase of the night sky glow near cities. Being part of the general urban lighting, façade lighting has not been studied though sufficiently concerning its impact on light pollution. In addition, the absence of strict restrictions applied on light pollution caused by façade lighting has been observed at global scale. This paper relies on a survey related to different existent façade lighting installations applied on modern buildings in Greece. The objective of this paper is the collection and comparison between gathered qualitative and quantitative data concerning the waste of light caused by façade lighting that is emitted towards unwanted directions such as sky or adjacent building properties. The aim of this research is the assessment of different façade lighting techniques regarding light pollution and energy waste.
