Current practice in schools building design is based essentially on three classroom types, the joint ones, the open plan one and the traditional separated ones. Attending national regulation, Brazilian public schools adopt the separated classrooms and therefore should provide an ideal building acoustic insulation performance to assure speech intelligibility. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of measured acoustical parameters in a Brazilian school with the FDE Brazilian directive and the British Building Bulletin 93. Building acoustic insulation performance parameters measured were facade sound insulation, vertical and horizontal airborne sound insulation in two different types of classroom and impact sound insulation. Measurements were according ISO16283-1, ISO717-1 and ISO717-2. Results showed that in all aspects the studied classroom does not comply with recommendations of any of the compared directives. The Brazilian directive also presents very few acoustics recommendations regarding insulation requirements, resulting in a low effectiveness regarding sound control and acoustic comfort. © 2015 by ASME.

Following by Jinjang New Village and Serdang New Village, "Ampang Chinese New Village" as the third largest Chinese New Village in Malaysia, it was the historical resettlement of over 60 years which cause by "Briggs Plan" in 1950 and became a specific living type. By the changed of population organization and conditions of used, combined with an economic factors and construction systems, generated a changed of external form and internal pattern of housing. In this research, in addition to the establishment of architecture basic data of Chinese New Village, with more attempt to the transformation of types of housing before and after, to explore the characteristics of housing space in Chinese New Village, with the purpose of sustained the building study of New Village. By selected the ways of field investigation and interviews, explore the modes of evolution on the function of housing spaces in Ampang New Village. The research performed with three representative samples of both housing alteration types and further with housing floor plans as analysis. The results show that the rules of evolution for the construction of additional space generally located in the open space behind the original house, with an average value which not exceeding 100㎡ floor area. Mainly use of building materials with wood, wood construction, zinc, is a non-permanent of materials. A transformation on partial space function was shown after housing alterations, but there was no obviously improvement of living quality. Living needs of users be the main considerations reason for redecorate, coupled with economic factors, with purposely performed in alterations of needs and restoration of damaged. However, Ampang Chinese New Village had witnessed the type of Chinese living space under "Briggs Plan" which was significance of historical buildings preservation, but it remains to be preserve and redecorate to improve the poor quality of Chinese living space inside Ampang Chinese New Village.

Implementing an augmented reality-enabled wayfinding system through studying user experience and requirements in complex environments

Background: Wayfinding is an exceedingly complicated cognitive process, especially in complex environments such as hospitals, shopping centers and airports. Inhabitants of such large environments can become lost very easily if they are unfamiliar with the environment. Although they may eventually be able to discover the route to a specific destination, interacting with conventional wayfinding aids, such as consulting a map, understanding signs, and asking people for directions, can be very time-consuming. Methods: The research presented in this paper developed a customized instrument (questionnaire) with factors identified as influencing the cognitive process of wayfinding, and conducted an explorative study to investigate user experience and requirements of wayfinding in complex environments;in this paper, a hospital was chosen as the context. Results: The results demonstrate that current wayfinding aids are insufficient to support a person's natural navigational behaviors in the environment. Augmented Reality (AR), which is an innovative concept of enabling digital information to be superimposed onto a real view in real time and context, has great potential to supplement current wayfinding aids. Therefore, we also conceived, developed and implemented an AR-based wayfinding system based on the user requirements identified by the aforementioned instrument. Conclusion: The AR-based wayfinding system was partially validated through case studies, which concluded that AR significantly reduced the time and cognition workload of human wayfinding behaviors. © 2015, Kim et al.

architecture as knowledge and practice is expanding its fields more than ever in this now entangled exciting new collaborative world network. We argue that the true nature of architecture is participatory one. Thus, architecture should be positioned as a social situation–it is neither affecting nor within. With this, we propose Participatory Action Research (PAR) that promotes ‘empowerment, equality and social justice for all’ as a framework for an alternative research methodology in architecture. Although PAR is still debatable as an academic research methodology, its growing popularities since the past decades could not be simply overlooked, especially when the reality of the world is now the connected one. With the same spirit, we adopt design Thinking (DT) as a tool to complement PAR in architectural research method. Undoubtedly, the combination of PAR and DT will eventually enrich architectural research with new social and participatory dimensions.

Motivation Here, we make available a second version of the BioTIME database, which compiles records of abundance estimates for species in sample events of ecological assemblages through time. The updated version expands version 1.0 of the database by doubling the number of studies and includes substantial additional curation to the taxonomic accuracy of the records, as well as the metadata. Moreover, we now provide an R package (BioTIMEr) to facilitate use of the database. Main Types of Variables Included The database is composed of one main data table containing the abundance records and 11 metadata tables. The data are organised in a hierarchy of scales where 11,989,233 records are nested in 1,603,067 sample events, from 553,253 sampling locations, which are nested in 708 studies. A study is defined as a sampling methodology applied to an assemblage for a minimum of 2 years. Spatial Location and Grain Sampling locations in BioTIME are distributed across the planet, including marine, terrestrial and freshwater realms. Spatial grain size and extent vary across studies depending on sampling methodology. We recommend gridding of sampling locations into areas of consistent size. Time Period and Grain The earliest time series in BioTIME start in 1874, and the most recent records are from 2023. Temporal grain and duration vary across studies. We recommend doing sample-level rarefaction to ensure consistent sampling effort through time before calculating any diversity metric. Major Taxa and Level of Measurement The database includes any eukaryotic taxa, with a combined total of 56,400 taxa. Software Format csv and. SQL.

The Museum Culture as a Means of Conjunction of the Urban and Rural Environment

Nowadays, the conjunction of the urban and rural environment is one of the most critical needs and necessities of modern cities. This paper attempts to investigate the contribution of museum policies in this particular effort. A museum, as it has been proved by both international and Greek practices, can constitute a projecting space of the environment, nature, local products and daily routines as well as occupations that tend to disappear over time. By integrating elements of the natural environment, the production process of traditional and local products and even the actual agricultural products in the interior, the architectural space creates a hybrid system in which the urban built environment coexists with the agricultural landscape. Through a retrospection of museums (Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil in Sparta, The Silk Museum in Soufli Evros, The Open Air Water Power Museum in Dimitsana Arcadia, The Rooftile and Brickworks Museum N.& S. Tsalapatas in Volos, The Museum of Marble Crafts in Pirgos, on the island of Tinos and the Museum of Traditional Occupations and Environment of Stymphalia in Korinthos) which are characteristic and successful attempts in the Greek domain, the potential and the dynamics of such museum tendencies is highlighted in an attempt to bring together urban and rural elements.

Determinants of brand loyalty: Self-construal, self-expressive brands, and brand attachment

The purpose of this paper was to explore the relationships among self-construal, self-expressive brands, and brand attachment with an emphasis on understanding the link to brand loyalty in US college students (219 women;41 men;mean age = 21.0). As a result, out of seven hypotheses, six hypotheses were accepted. Independent/interdependent self-construal is positively related to self-expressive brand. Self-expressive brand is positively related to ownership/emotion brand attachment. Ownership/emotion brand attachment is positively related to brand loyalty. Finally, self-expressive brand is positively related to brand loyalty. Results supported propositions of relationship theory and provided practical implications. © 2014 Taylor and Francis.

Infrared Imaging as a Means of Analyzing and Improving Energy Efficiency of Building Envelopes: The case of a LEED Gold Building

Today many designers claim that they are engineering green or LEED certified buildings. LEED is an evaluation system that rates how sensitive buildings are to the environment and the objective of LEED is to reduce emissions through development of highly efficient mechanical systems, designing of durable and efficient wall systems and by providing additional thickness to insulation. Unfortunately currently there are many cases where these wall systems and insulations are supported by thin steel studs, which are highly conductive of energy and are 400 times more conductive than wood. The aim of this paper is to investigate the use of thermal bridging in a LEED certified building. Thermal bridging is a major source of heat loss through studs and wall systems in many buildings worldwide. The investigated building is Gold certified building built in 2011 located in Toronto, Canada. The exterior walls consist of a copper and brick cladding and steel studs. Using thermal imaging, as a non-destructive testing method, this research investigates and identifies the location of thermal bridging. This study recommends how to integrate infrared imaging into the LEED certification process and how to improve the future design of efficient wall systems.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a standard comfort features presented on the consideration of the traditional houses, called Hanok in Korea. In addition, this paper is to build a diversified, integrated evaluation system considering traditional, aesthetic and psychological values. For this study, the degree of integrative comfort was analyzed and comfort performance has been classified. Comfort performance was divided into two large comfort performance categories: physical and psychological. For this research, survey data from residents were collected for evaluating psychological comfort. Existing relevant studies about comfort evaluation system were driven to reveal the quantitative comfort elements of the suggested classification system. This study also contains a qualitative in-depth analysis of the comfort factor and will examine the effect of those elements. This study has finally proposed an integrated comfort evaluation system that can evaluate over inhabitants of the interior environmental conditions and surveys. As a result, the proposed system will have to be turned on quite good applicability in the field.

Façade plays an important role in modern movement architecture and a critical role in the conception of energy and climate-optimized buildings: it is the building's skin and functions as an interface between interior and exterior space. It provides thermal and sound insulation and ventilation, and controls and guides the entrance of daylight into the building. Tropical climates have unique challenges to reduce solar heat gain through building envelope to make buildings energy efficient. India has a rich tradition of different forms of architecture and design principles - most of them are perfectly adapted to the climatic requirements and constructed with local building materials and technology. In the twentieth century, Modern Movement architecture shows a global trend towards transparent, light-flled buildings with great expanses of windows and façades with advanced building technology. However, the twentieth century modern movement architecture in India evolved in response to the climate and culture. In India, remarkably diverse constellations of façade design can be traced in modern architecture often taking into consideration traditional Indian principles combining them with new materials and constructions. Most of them marked by overhanging balconies and horizontal brise-soleils and as an example of a human scaled urban infrastructure offering private and public green spaces in transition. After independence in 1947 more public, administrative and governmental buildings followed in the tradition of the modern movement and with emblematic character. This paper presents a review of the influences of modern movement architecture on today's facade design in tropical climate of India.
