Factor analysis of semantic differential data, with forty-eight cases of collegiate lecture rooms psychologically assessed by students during regular classes, has established that distance evaluation forms diagonal coordinates together with overall evaluation. Multiple regression analysis has then explained psychological distance in five variables: room depth, natural lighting, illumination, window-opening ratio and student density. The ratio of room depth to breadth and main window area on both sides are also explanatory variables, supporting hypotheses of tunnel effect and window-frame rhythms as increasing factor. A multiple-regression equation explaining 69.4% of variance has revealed that 100-180 lx increase of illumination should compensate 1.8m decrease in room depth.
This paper will discuss conceptual fundamentals that will support a thesis research. This thesis discusses the incorporation of BIM into the digital architecturedesign process and proposes to analyze an alternative u...

The purpose of this study is to compare characteristics of ‘ Yi San,' a historical drama showing the mid-Joseon period, and of ‘ East of Eden,' a drama showing the 1970s and 1980s of Korea and to analyze spatial and structural features of the sets and the finishing materials used,so that the study can build up data of how to improve economically efficiency and safety of use of finishing materials in planning drama set *** drama sets were found to be designed through research into historical documents,to have the exteriors built by actual architectural techniques and to be structured to show varied perceptions of space by,for example, arranging streets and regulating movement *** surface materials, the set of ‘Yi San' was built in a traditional construction way of wooden buildings,"Ik Gong" and that of ‘ East of Eden' was made with sandwich panels with VP coating and veneer boards with foreign cement tiles in the forty three steel frame structures.

The intimate relationship of the designer and the client has led me to a parallel practice of investigating the built form of biography. The notion of working with biography is a device for avoiding willful design. It provides a conceptual guidance to make decisions. The medium that has been used is "furniture," which is a smaller and more direct vehicle for ideas than architectural space.

The "Century of Progress"World's Fair is a poor stepchild among the great international exhibitions of the modern era. Its name conjures up no defining image, and there is no substantial body of scholarship surrounding it. Lisa Schrenk's book aims to correct this by placing the fair in relation to the discussion about modern architecture taking place in the United States, and to a lesser degree in Europe, during the interwar period. It is a well-researched, well-written, and well-illustrated book that will appeal mostly to architectural historians, but also to those historians of technology interested in building construction. Schrenk lays out the process of conceptualizing and realizing the fair, discusses the design of individual pavilions (especially the popular "ideal homes" exhibits with their innovative domestic technologies), and concludes with a look at the reception of the fair and an assessment of its influence.

The newly developed urban environment often shows extensive neglect of local values and a lack of design promoting environmental quality in our cities and towns within the 'economic' concept of a city. Most housing environments, particularly those produced on the basis of mass production systems, are missing vital aspects of sustainability and lack environmental and humane qualities, both at urban and architectural levels. It is essential to focus on the requirements of sustainable development, both as a philosophy of planning and design and during the process of making and managing our environments. Current urban and architectural development practices in Cyprus cannot be considered sustainable. However, traditional settlements on Cyprus, such as the vernacular patterns, are excellent examples to learn from as they represent a long-established culture and good use of local values and resources, matched with local skills meeting people's needs. This paper first focuses on what sustainability means in terms of housing environments by highlighting the qualities of traditional housing patterns in Cypriot settlements. Second, it provides a critical evaluation of newly developed housing patterns on the island in terms of the environment and traditions. Finally, it proposes principles of sustainable planning and design whose main aim is to create buildings that are sensitive to people and the environment and are culturally specific.

Branchingoccursin natural systemsfor functional reasons. However, the branching logic for each specific system is quite different due to environmental and mathematical factors. In the computation of branching systems, these mathematical factors can be incorporated quite easily into the coding of each system. However, it is the environmental components that must be given further consideration in the simulation of these natural systems. Through the engine of genetic algorithms based on evolutionary developmental theory, the specific logics observed and analyzed in branching patterns of river systems, trees, and insect tracheae can be simulated and optimized in a digital environment.

A material systemcan be defined asaset of self-organized materials, defining acertain spatial arrangement. In architecture, this material arrangement acts as a threshold for space, though space often only appears as a by-product of the material organization. Treating space as a resulting, therefore secondary, independent product minimizes the capacity to generate architecture that is astutely aware of concerns of functionality, environment and energy. An effective arrangement of material can only be determined in relation to the spaces that it defines. When proposing a more critical approach, a material system can be seen as an intimate inter-connection and reciprocal exchange between the material construct and the spatial conditions. It is necessary to re-define material system as a system that coevolves spatial and material configurations through analysis of the resultant whole, in a process of integration and evaluation. With this understanding of material system comes an expansion in the number of criteria that are simultaneously engaged in the evolution of the design. The material characteristics, as well as the spatial components and forces (external and internal), are pressures onto the arrangement of material and space. This brings a high degree of complexity to the process. Biological systems are built on methods that resolve complex interactions through sets of simple yet extensible rules. Evolutionary Developmental Biology explains how growth is an interconnected process of external forces registering fitness into a fixed catalogue of morphological genetic tools. Translating the specific framework for biological growth into computational processes, allows the pursuit of an architecture that is fully informed by the interaction of space and material.
