Multimodal manipulations (also known as audiovisual deepfakes) make it difficult for unimodal deepfake detectors to detect forgeries in multimedia content. To avoid the spread of false propaganda and fake news, timely detection is crucial. The damage to either modality (i.e., visual or audio) can only be discovered through multi-modal models that can exploit both pieces of information simultaneously. Previous methods mainly adopt uni-modal video forensics and use supervised pre-training for forgery detection. This study proposes a new method based on a multi-modal self-supervised-learning (SSL) feature extractor to exploit inconsistency between audio and visual modalities for multi-modal video forgery detection. We use the transformer-based SSL pre-trained Audio-Visual HuBERT (AV-HuBERT) model as a visual and acoustic feature extractor and a multi-scale temporal convolutional neural network to capture the temporal correlation between the audio and visual modalities. Since AV-HuBERT only extracts visual features from the lip region, we also adopt another transformer-based video model to exploit facial features and capture spatial and temporal artifacts caused during the deepfake generation process. Experimental results show that our model outperforms all existing models and achieves new state-of-the-art performance on the FakeAVCeleb and DeepfakeTIMIT datasets. © 2023, CC BY.

N4-methylcytosine (4mC) is a modified form of cytosine found in DNA, contributing to epigenetic regulation. It exists in various genomes, including the Rosaceae family encompassing significant fruit crops like apples, cherries, and roses. Previous investigations have examined the distribution and functional implications of 4mC sites within the Rosaceae genome, focusing on their potential roles in gene expression regulation, environmental adaptation, and evolution. This research aims to improve the accuracy of predicting 4mC sites within the genome of Fragaria vesca, a Rosaceae plant species. Building upon the original 4mc-w2vec method, which combines word embedding processing and a convolutional neural network (CNN), we have incorporated additional feature encoding techniques and leveraged pre-trained natural language processing (NLP) models with different deep learning architectures including different forms of CNN, recurrent neural networks (RNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM). Our assessments have shown that the best model is derived from a CNN model using fastText encoding. This model demonstrates enhanced performance, achieving a sensitivity of 0.909, specificity of 0.77, and accuracy of 0.879 on an independent dataset. Furthermore, our model surpasses previously published works on the same dataset, thus showcasing its superior predictive capabilities. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

During the past seven years Dr. Bailey has been actively involved with the design development production and evaluation of interactive videodisc projects. He has managed many interactive video projects and conducts interactive video workshops for interested professionals. As a frequent speaker at national and international conferences Dr. Bailey possesses broad practical experience in the teaching and development of interactive video instructional systems. Dr. Nancy E. Thornton:is Assistant Director for Research and Development of the Institute for Interactive Technologies at Bloomsburg University Bloomsburg Pennsylvania. Her educational background includes a PhD in Educational Psychology from Arizona State University an MS in Speech and Hearing from Washington University and a BA in Psychology and Speech from the College of St. Catherine. She teaches introductory and advanced instructional design and authoring systems in the Master of Science program in Instructional Technology. Her specialty areas include instructional design learning theory and classroom applications of interactive technologies.

This article provides information about the actual and potential uses of interactive video in instruction in an effort to motivate educators to consider using this technology to improve teaching. The authors (1) describe the continuing evolution of computer-based educational tools; (2) examine instances when an interactive videodisc provides viable instructional solutions to otherwise very difficult or impossible tasks; (3) discuss several models for delivering instruction to accommodate different learning styles and teaching methods; and (4) provide a framework for designing lessons systematically based on proven methods.

To develop a structure-spectroscopic property relationship in platinum acetylides having poly(aromatic hydrocarbon) ligands, we synthesized a series of chromophores with systematic variation in the number of fused aromatic rings(nFAR) and ligand topology(polyacene(L), polyphenanthrene(Z) or compact(C)). We measured ground state absorption, fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra. We also performed nanosecond and picosecond flash photolysis experiments. To extend the range of compounds in the structure-property relationship, we did DFT calculations on an expanded series of chromophores to calculate the S1 and T1 state energies. In both the DFT results and experiment, the ground state and phosphorescence spectra are a function of both nFAR and ligand topology. In the L chromophores, the S1 and T1 state energies decrease linearly with nFAR. In contrast the S1 and T1 state energies of the Z chromophores oscillate with increasing nFAR. The C chromophores have behavior intermediate between the L and Z chromophores. The picosecond transient spectra show complex behavior, having spectra reflecting intersystem crossing, vibrational cooling and solvent relaxation processes. The nanosecond transient spectra result from the T1 - Tn transition. The timeresolved spectra show no systematic variation with structure, showing more complex behavior than previously studied platinum acetylides having phenylene ethynylene ligands. © 2009 SPIE.

The emergence of contemporary deepfakes has attracted significant attention in machine learning research, as artificial intelligence (AI) generated synthetic media increases the incidence of misinterpretation and is difficult to distinguish from genuine content. Currently, machine learning techniques have been extensively studied for automatically detecting deepfakes. However, human perception has been less explored. Malicious deepfakes could ultimately cause public and social problems. Can we humans correctly perceive the authenticity of the content of the videos we watch? The answer is obviously uncertain;therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the human ability to discern deepfake videos through a subjective study. We present our findings by comparing human observers to five state-of-the-art deepfake detection models. To this end, we used gamification concepts to provide 110 participants (55 native English speakers and 55 non-native English speakers) with a web-based platform where they could access a series of 40 videos (20 real and 20 fake) to determine their authenticity. Each participant performed the experiment twice with the same 40 videos in different random orders. The videos are manually selected from the FakeAVCeleb dataset. We found that all AI models performed significantly better than humans when evaluated on the same 40 videos. The study also reveals that while deception is not impossible, humans tend to overestimate their detection capabilities. Our experimental results may help benchmark human versus machine performance, advance forensics analysis, and enable adaptive countermeasures. © 2024, CC BY.

Deep Learning has been successfully applied in diverse fields, and its impact on deepfake detection is no exception. Deepfakes are fake yet realistic synthetic content that can be used deceitfully for political impersonation, phishing, slandering, or spreading misinformation. Despite extensive research on unimodal deepfake detection, identifying complex deepfakes through joint analysis of audio and visual streams remains relatively unexplored. To fill this gap, this survey first provides an overview of audiovisual deepfake generation techniques, applications, and their consequences, and then provides a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art methods that combine audio and visual modalities to enhance detection accuracy, summarizing and critically analyzing their strengths and limitations. Furthermore, we discuss existing open source datasets for a deeper understanding, which can contribute to the research community and provide necessary information to beginners who want to analyze deep learning-based audiovisual methods for video forensics. By bridging the gap between unimodal and multimodal approaches, this paper aims to improve the effectiveness of deepfake detection strategies and guide future research in cybersecurity and media integrity. © 2024, CC BY.

Forged content shared widely on social media platforms is a major social problem that requires increased regulation and poses new challenges to the research community. The recent proliferation of hyper-realistic deepfake videos has drawn attention to the threat of audio and visual forgeries. Most previous work on detecting AI-generated fake videos only utilizes visual modality or audio modality. While there are some methods in the literature that exploit audio and visual modalities to detect forged videos, they have not been comprehensively evaluated on multi-modal datasets of deepfake videos involving acoustic and visual manipulations. Moreover, these existing methods are mostly based on CNN and suffer from low detection accuracy. Inspired by the recent success of Transformer in various fields, to address the challenges posed by deepfake technology, in this paper, we propose an Audio-Visual Transformer-based Ensemble Network (AVTENet) framework that considers both acoustic manipulation and visual manipulation to achieve effective video forgery detection. Specifically, the proposed model integrates several purely transformer-based variants that capture video, audio, and audio-visual salient cues to reach a consensus in prediction. For evaluation, we use the recently released benchmark multi-modal audio-video FakeAVCeleb dataset. For a detailed analysis, we evaluate AVTENet, its variants, and several existing methods on multiple test sets of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. Experimental results show that our best model outperforms all existing methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance on Testset-I and Testset-II of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. © 2023, CC BY.

Assessing the ecosystem service values of tea plantations using conventional and organic farming methods: Is organic farming always better?

Low-elevation mountainous (LEM) areas in some countries are reclaimed for agriculture (especially, for deep cultivation of tea trees) due to their accessibility, higher temperature, and more rainfall, contributing to biodiversity and ecological balance. However, extensive development in these areas causes lasting ecological damage;and hence it is crucial to evaluate the ecological value of these areas for formulating relevant ecological protection policies. Therefore, this study evaluated the ecosystem service value of tea plantations in LEM areas using the contingent valuation method based on the subjective consciousness of farmers, rather than an objective assessment. A questionnaire survey was conducted on tea farmers in Mingjian Township (which is one of the major tea-producing LEM areas in Mid-Taiwan);and ecosystem service values of tea plantations between conventional farming methods (CFMs) and organic farming methods (OFMs) were compared. Firstly, the differences in willingness to pay (WTP) for the samples including and excluding protest responses were investigated, and then a regression analysis to estimate the WTP price for maintaining the tea plantation ecology was conducted. Empirical results showed a significantly negative correlation between the WTP price and the education level of farmers in tea plantations using CFMs, but a significantly positive correlation in tea plantations using both CFMs and OFMs. Most respondents were male and used CFMs to operate tea plantations;and those with higher monthly income and using both CFMs and OFMs were willing to pay more. Regarding ecosystem services of tea plantations, the respondents preferred the "provisioning" ecosystem services, and were willing to pay an average of NT$ 718.92 and NT$ 794.32 per year for maintaining the ecology of tea plantations using CFMs and OFMs, respectively. Most energy exchanges take place through the building skin. The skin characteristics play a decisive role in the extent of these exchanges, but they are somewhat more varied in the double skin façade (DSF). Among these characteristics, cavity segmentation has a noticeable effect on the implementation of the DSF in different directions during the hot and cold seasons. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of DSF segmentation in energy consumption and natural ventilation of high-rise buildings in hot and dry climates. This study used DesignBuilder software to study sixty-four segmentation component scenarios in an eight-story residential building in Isfahan, Iran. Moreover, a proposed hybrid model utilizing the hybridization of the Hunger Game Search and Gradient Boosting (HGS-GB) algorithm was employed to estimate energy consumption in various scenarios involving lighting, heating, cooling, and total scenarios. The available outcomes revealed that the HGS-GB model had a better performance in comparison with other individual models, such as Gradient Boosting (GB), Random Forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbors (KNN). The R2 values for lighting, heating, cooling, and total energy estimation were 0.9993, 0.9958, 0.9991, and 0.9922, respectively. The findings of this study suggest the significance of DSF segmentation in energy consumption and natural ventilation in high-rise buildings in hot and dry climates. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) are integral components of e-healthcare systems, responsible for monitoring patients' physiological states through intelligent implantable or wearable sensor nodes. These nodes collect medical data, which is then transmitted to remote healthcare facilities for thorough evaluation. Securing medical data within WBANs is paramount due to its central role in preserving patient privacy and confidentiality. Notably, Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals have recently gained prominence as pivotal elements within diverse security frameworks. Incorporating ECG signals strategically enhances the security and reliability of WBANs and broader e-healthcare systems, instilling greater trustworthiness. This survey article provides an in-depth exploration of contemporary ECG-based security schemes, adding to the scholarly discourse. The imperative to categorize these security paradigms revolves around their use of ECG signals. This categorization identifies three key domains: the first involves schemes that utilize ECG signals for cryptographic operations, encompassing key generation, agreement, management, and authentication. The second category employs steganography-based techniques, using ECG signals to conceal patients' sensitive medical data. The third category focuses on enhancing ECG signal security during data transmission. Each category is meticulously elaborated, detailing architectural foundations, notable contributions, and intrinsic security services. Furthermore, each section presents a comprehensive overview of the attributes characterizing ECG-based security frameworks. This includes insights into employed datasets, simulation environments, evaluation metrics, and inherent advantages and limitations. Expanding on this, a thorough analysis of distinctive attributes underpinning these security frameworks concludes by shedding light on potential directions for future research. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
