Filling a gap in climate change education and scholarship

With few exceptions, universities and other educational institutions have yet to undertake the necessary innovations and transformations that will be needed to prepare a future workforce on the scale necessary to address the challenge of greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation in a way that instils public and policy-maker confidence. Irrespective of the form or timing of climate change policies, the foundation of policy design and implementation measures to address the root cause of climate change is reliable metrics on GHG emissions (and removals). There is currently minimal infrastructure in place to develop or support this workforce. I define GHG measurement and management, which also serves as the title of this journal, as the application of science, engineering and economic principles to improve the way in which society mitigates the anthropogenic causes of global climate change by developing and providing reliable performance metrics related to GHG emissions and removals, and managing activities intended to reduce emissions to, and/or increase removals from, the atmosphere. This journal's unique purpose, as part of the growing literature focused on climate change, is to help us expand this literature to include critical and unexplored questions of implementation.

This review article examines the primary issues, the successes and the challenges of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), established under the Kyoto Protocol. It is the primary international greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions offset programme in existence today, and while not perfect, it has helped to establish a global market for GHG emission reductions. It generates offsets through investments in developing countries. The CDM has managed to establish – in its relatively nearly decade of existence –a credible, internationally recognized, multibillion dollar carbon offset market with participation from a large number of developing countries and private investors. It has also created processes and methodologies that other programmes are already emulating. A vast amount of work and investment – by participating countries, the private sector, and the UNFCCC secretariat – has gone into developing the CDM's rules, procedures and institutional structures. The creation and rapid growth of a large and unprecedented international programme, however, has not been without its challenges or controversies. Issues have been raised regarding the governance of CDM, the quality of approved projects and the contribution of CDM to sustainable development.

Co-processing of grinding sludge as alternative raw material in portland cement clinker production

This research aimed to investigate the potential of partial substitution of cement raw meal with grinding sludge as an alternative raw material in Portland cement clinker production. Cement raw mixtures with up to 3% raw mix replacement were put through a burning process in a high-temperature furnace. One reference and three modified mixtures, containing 1, 2 and 3% dry weight of grinding sludge were examined. XRF analysis results showed that CaO, SiO2, A12O3 and Fe2O3 in ordinary cement raw meal were within typical concentration ranges. The grinding sludge had high concentrations of iron, cadmium, chromium and nickel and was consequently classified as a hazardous waste. High Fe2O3 made the grinding sludge a good candidate for alternative raw material. Higher replacement of grinding sludge was found to improve burnability, reduce formation of major of cement compositions (dicalcium silicate, C2S and tricalcium aluminate, C3A), lower in silica and alumina ratios, but promote the formation of tricalcium silicate (C3S) and tetracalcium aluminateferrite (C4AF). Microstructural analysis of the synthesized Portland clinker revealed that the grinding sludge promoted formation of secondary C2S as well as caused color change of C3S. Thai regulatory leaching procedure was performed on the synthesized clinker and mortar samples. The concentrations of heavy metals in the leachate were found below the limits. Moreover, the maximum substitution of grinding sludge was found to be 2% of grinding sludge. Thus, this sludge has potential applications as an alternative raw material in cement production. © 2010 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

作者： Dr. Roy L. Streit Since 1992 Dr. Streit has focused a significant amount of his energy to assignment problems in acoustic warfare data fusion systems. This work led him to the formulation of the PDD Principle a broadly useful theoretical method that enables the derivation of new classes of discrete-continuous estimation algorithms for solving assignment problems without requiring enumeration and pruning. In recognition of his outstanding work in this area Dr. Streit received the NAVSEA Scientist of the Year Award for 1997. Dr. Streit has also been pursuing avenues for analyzing the loss in broadband detection performance of an acoustic array in the presence of interferences. Because examining all possible separations between the signal and many interferers is infeasible he has proposed a Poisson process model for the number and location (s) of the interferers. In this same time period Dr. Streit has also been investigating issues in environmental modeling and localization by proposing a novel integral method for solving the bearings-only target motion analysis problem which enables a natural heuristic for compensating for mismatch between the model predictions and the real world. Most recently Dr. Streit has proposed the Numerical ACoustic Hull ARray (NACHAR) Project as a revolutionary and ambitious approach to hull array design. Its premise is that optimizing the detection capability of large hull arrays requires the full integration of hull sensor array and beamformer design processes. Because NACHAR crosses an unusual number of technical disciplines it involves researchers from several departments. The diversity of Dr. Streif s technical background makes him uniquely suited to lead the project Dr. Streifs truly impressive scientific achievements are complemented by a noteworthy list of professional activities that accentuate his value to Division Newport and the Navy. Engineering education in the United States is confronted with some new realities, both real and perceived. Engineering is increasingly a globally distributed, cooperative activity and the US outsourcing of research, design, manufacturing, and construction overseas is growing. Further, the production of engineers in the United States is falling to around 5-6% of the global supply with clear signs that engineering education is available at lower costs, often far lower, in other countries. Many have viewed this globalization as a competitive situation for engineering education in the United States that we are losing. We will present the view that in terms of the quality of engineering education (which engineering educators can influence) as opposed to the global economy (about which we can do little), engineering education is still very strong in the US and likely to remain that way. However, we will present some recommendations based on our professional responsibilities in running programs in entrepreneurship, leadership, and design. In particular, we will review survey data collected from Penn State engineering graduates over the last decade which helps define new paths for integrating entrepreneurship, leadership and design into the engineering curriculum. We believe that there are some very real ways in which engineering education can, and should be, responding to the new requirements for success in professional engineering careers that derive from national needs as well as from the globalization of engineering. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.
