Tantalum silicate (Ta–Si–O) thin film materials have gained significant interest in hybrid renewable energy systems and thin-film resistors due to their exceptional thermal stability and adjustable electrical properties. In this study, we investigated the effects of target compositions and sputtering power densities on the material structures, chemical compositions, microstructures, and electrical properties of Ta–Si–O films. Two target compositions, Ta65(SiO2)35 and Ta80(SiO2)20, were utilized in the deposition process. Notably, we observed substantial variations in the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) value and resistivity of Ta–Si–O thin films with different Ta concentrations. Most importantly, when the Ta content of the film is controlled at 62 ± 0.6 % by using this target, the resistivity of the Ta0.62Si0.20O0.18 film can be as small as 2.31 ± 0.05 × 10−4 Ω-cm and has an extremely small TCR of 22 ± 0.4 ppm/°C, which shows an excellent opportunity for the development of precision thin film resistors. A TCR value close to zero can be finely tuned by controlling the Ta concentration in the Ta–Si–O film. These intriguing electrical behaviors were found to be highly correlated with the predominant formation of metallic Ta5Si3 as the main structural phase in the films. This work presents a simple and effective approach to produce Ta–Si–O thin films with near-zero TCR, making them highly suitable for applications under high-temperature conditions. Our findings contribute to the development of tailored thin film materials with desirable electrical properties for advanced electronic and energy devices. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

A study has been conducted to determine the competencies of 200 active biomedical equipment technicians (BMET) who are members of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation. Participants were asked to rate the importance and frequency of use of clinical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and clinical practices, as related to the completion of routine BMET tasks. Results suggest that clinical practice competencies are more frequently used and are more important than anatomy and physiology competencies. This indicates a need to focus on health care practices, practical experiences, and clinical skills during the education and training of BMETs.

This study aimed to compare the characteristics, antioxidant activity, and cytotoxicity of Ganoderma lucidum G2 spore (GLS) oil extracted using two different extraction methods, including Soxhlet extraction (SLE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). The SLE method yielded higher oil content than the MAE method. MAE-extracted oil showed higher lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*) values but lower redness (a*) values. Both methods provided similar fatty acid compositions in GLS oils, including palmitic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid as major components. Higher saturated fatty acid content was found in SLE-extracted oil, while MAE-extracted oil had increased levels of mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids. The oil obtained from SLE showed slightly higher di- and tri-glycerides than that obtained from MAE (P < 0.05). Furthermore, MAE-extracted oil had high oxidative stability as indicated by lower levels of conjugated diene (CD), peroxide value (PV), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), and free fatty acids (FFA) as compared to SLE (P < 0.05). MAE-extracted oil had a higher total triterpenoid content than SLE-extracted oil (P < 0.05). Also, MAE-extracted oil showed lower DPPH radical scavenging activity (DPPH-RSA) than SLE-extracted oil (P < 0.05). FTIR spectra of both samples exhibited similar functional groups. Additionally, oils obtained from both processes (at 0.1–10 µg/mL) showed low toxicity on Caco-2 cells (P > 0.05). Therefore, GLS oil with high antioxidant activity and oxidative stability, especially oil extracted by MAE, could be a food supplement for health. Also, the MAE used was a potential implement for extracting oil from GLS. © 2024

Background: Improving the accessibility of screening diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from non-diabetic kidney disease (NDKD) are two major challenges in the field of diabetes care. We aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning system to detect DKD and isolated diabetic nephropathy from retinal fundus images. Methods: In this population-based study, we developed a retinal image-based AI-deep learning system, DeepDKD, pretrained using 734 084 retinal fundus images. First, for DKD detection, we used 486 312 retinal images from 121 578 participants in the Shanghai Integrated Diabetes Prevention and Care System for development and internal validation, and ten multi-ethnic datasets from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the UK (65 406 participants) for external validation. Second, to differentiate isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, we used 1068 retinal images from 267 participants for development and internal validation, and three multi-ethnic datasets from China, Malaysia, and the UK (244 participants) for external validation. Finally, we conducted two proof-of-concept studies: a prospective real-world study with 3 months' follow-up to evaluate the effectiveness of DeepDKD in screening DKD;and a longitudinal analysis of the effectiveness of DeepDKD in differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD on renal function changes with 4·6 years' follow-up. Findings: For detecting DKD, DeepDKD achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0·842 (95% CI 0·838–0·846) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·791–0·826 across external validation datasets. For differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, DeepDKD achieved an AUC of 0·906 (0·825–0·966) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·733–0·844 across external validation datasets. Future USN aircraft carrier analysis of alternatives

作者： Raber, JD Perin, DA Mr. James D. Raber:received a master of science degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967. Since 1967 he has worked for the Navy Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and predecessor organizations in the area of early stage design of naval ships. Among the major USN programs he has supported are the FFG 7 and DDG 51. In the late ‘70s he was the NAVSEA representative to the CNO DDX Study Group which established the general requirements for the DDG 51 class. He has been active in international technical exchange programs for which he was awarded membership in the National Order of Merit by the Republic of France in 1992. Since early 1996 he has been the NAVSEA Ship Concept Team Leader for what is now the CVNX Program. Dr. David A. Perin:received a PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1971. He joined the Center for Naval Analyses in 1973 where he has led a wide variety of studies on naval warfare. From 1985 to 1987 he served as the CNA representative on the staff of Commander Striking Fleet Atlantic for which he was awarded a Defense Distinguished Service Medal. During the 1990s he has led formal analysis of alternatives for the LPD-17 F/A-18E/F and CVX. Currently he is the Director of the JCC(X) Analysis of Alternatives.

In March 1996, the Department of Defense established a new program, then known as CVX, to develop a new class of aircraft carrier that would eventually replace the Nimitz class. The first step in the concept develop was exploring a wide range of alternative design concepts in a formal study known as an Analysis of Alternatives (AOA), which assessed their cost and operational effectiveness. About 70 total ship studies were developed to explore the range of design features, including airwing size and type, propulsion type, ship mobility performance, and a variety of survivability features. The AOA also assessed the performance of and total ownership cost of a large number of potential subsystem technologies. This paper summarizes the total ship studies developed for the AOA describes the ship system performance and total ownership cost of these alternatives, and discusses the rationale for determining some of the primary system requirements. Thus, the paper will provide insight into the Navy's intentions for system requirements and features to be incorporated into the U.S. Navy's future aircraft carriers.

Objective: We aimed to determine the reliability of using the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index in COVID-19 patients without underlying liver illness. Method: We employed multivariate logistic regression to identify variables that exhibited statistically significant influence on the ultimate outcome. Multilayer perceptron analysis was employed to develop a prediction model for the FIB-4 index concerning ICU admission and intubation rates. However, the scarcity of cases rendered the assessment of the mortality rate unfeasible. We plotted ROC curves to analyze the predictive strength of the FIB-4 index across various age groups. Result: In univariate logistic regression, only the FIB-4 index and respiratory rate demonstrated statistical significance on all poor outcomes. The FIB-4 index for mortality prediction had an ROC and AUC of 0.863 (95% CI: 0.781–0.9444). It demonstrates predictive power across age groups, particularly for age ≥65 (AUC: 0.812, 95% CI: 0.6571–0.9673) and age <65 (AUC: 0.878, 95% CI: 0.8012–0.9558). Its sensitivity for intubation and ICU admission prediction is suboptimal. Conclusion: FIB-4 index had promising power in prediction of mortality rate in all age groups. © 2024 The Authors

Objectives: The 12-item Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form (SCS–SF) is a widely used instrument for the assessment of self-compassion. To date, there have been few examinations of this instrument’s psychometric properties, particularly across nations and languages. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS) to assess measurement invariance of the SCS–SF across nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Methods: Participants (N = 56,968) from 65 nations completed the SCS–SF in 40 languages. Using these data, we tested various hypothesised models of the SCS–SF in the total sample and, using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis, tested for invariance of the optimal model across national groups, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Results: In the total dataset, we found that an 11-item, 2-factor model (i.e., SCS-11) provided best fit to the data, with the two factors tapping distinct constructs of compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding. The SCS-11 was found to be partially scalar invariant across national groups and languages, and fully scalar invariant across gender identities and age groups. There was wide variation in latent means for the two factors, particularly across national groups and languages. Further analyses showed negligible associations between the two factors and sociodemographic variables, including marital status, financial security, and urbanicity. Conclusions: Our results suggest that it may be possible to derive a stable 2-factor model of the SCS–SF for use in cross-cultural research, but also highlight the likelihood of cross-national and cross-linguistic variations in the way that self-compassion is understood. © The Author(s) 2025.

We developed and validated a deep learning system (termed DeepDR Plus) in a diverse, multiethnic, multi-country dataset to predict personalized risk and time to progression of diabetic retinopathy. We show that DeepDR Plus can be integrated into the clinical workflow to promote individualized intervention strategies for the management of diabetic retinopathy.

One complication of plasma transfusion is non-immune transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI), which is associated with the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) resulting from polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) activation. Activated platelets have recently been shown to trigger NETs formation. We hypothesized that (a) NETs could be promoted by platelet derived microparticles (PMPs) and (b) that 75 nm-nanofiltration of plasma, by removing parts of PMPs, could avoid NETs formation. To better characterize the large spectrum of size and concentration of PMPs in complex media, we combined conventional approaches (Flow Cytometry, TRPS) with an original nanobioanalytical (NBA) platform based on Surface Plasmon Resonance imaging (SPRi) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) techniques. We will demonstrate that this new analytic solution allows: • a label-free follow-up of PMPs capture in real time from various complex media, • a multiplex detection of different PMPs subpopulations, • the determination of the size and morphology of captured PMPs in a range of 20 nm to 1 μm their proteomic studies. We expect that such platform will contribute to (i) a better understanding of the physiological function of Evs subpopulations, (ii) the discovery of specific biomarkers and (iii) to therapeutic follow-up.

Purpose: This study aims to determine the effects of perioperative dexmedetomidine infusion (PDI) on Asian patients undergoing bariatric–metabolic surgery (BMS), focusing on the need for pain medications and management of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), and to investigate the association with these variables, including patients’ characteristics and BMS data. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of prospectively collected data was conducted in an Asian weight management center from August 2016 to October 2021. A total of 147 native patients with severe obesity were enrolled. All patients were informed of the full support of perioperative pain medications for BMS. The pain numeric rating scale scores, events of PONV, needs for pain medications, and the associated patients’ characteristics were analyzed. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Furthermore, to verify the effects of perioperative usage of dexmedetomidine for BMS, a systematic review with meta-analysis of currently available randomized control trials was performed. Results: Among the 147 enrolled patients, 107 underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and 40 underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. PDI has been used as an adjunct multimodal analgesia for BMS in our institution since June 2017 (group D;n = 114). In comparison with those not administered with perioperative dexmedetomidine (group C;n = 33), lower pain numeric rating scale scores (2.52 ± 2.46 vs. 4.27 ± 2.95, p = 0.007) in the postanesthesia care unit, fewer PONV (32.46% vs. 51.52%;p = 0.046), and infrequent needs of additional pain medications (19.47% vs. 45.45%;p = 0.003) were observed in group D. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that type II diabetes mellitus was correlated with the decreased need of pain medications other than PDI (p = 0.035). Moreover, dexmedetomidine seemed to have a better analgesic effect for patients with longer surgical time based on our meta-analysis. Conclusion:
