This paper studies the issues of using mobile agents to achieve load sharing for network services in a wide-area network environment such as the internet. Traditionally, load sharing algorithms are based on the message-passing paradigm. In this paper, we propose the use of mobile agents as an aid to design fully distributed and dynamic load-sharing mechanisms for wide-area network services, which provide several advantages over the pure message passing-based approach. A framework (called MALS-mobile agent-enabled load sharing) for structuring and designing load sharing in wide-area network services is presented. In particular, we describe the design of a mobile agent-enabled distributed dynamic load sharing scheme within the MALS framework. A simulation environment of the load sharing protocol is being implemented using Aglet/spl trade/, a Java-compliant mobile agent platform from IBM. Preliminary experimental results demonstrated that the proposed framework is effective.

Two of the fundamental issues in message passing between mobile agents are tracking the migration of the target agent and delivering messages to it. In order to provide reliable message delivery, protocols are needed to overcome message loss caused by asynchronous operations of agent migration and message forwarding. In this paper, two message forwarding approaches, namely push and pull, are explored to design adaptive and reliable message delivery protocols. The pros and cons of these two approaches are evaluated, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The comparative performance evaluation is in terms of network traffic and delay in message processing. We also propose improvements to the pull approach to reduce network traffic and the message delay. We conclude that with different communication and migration patterns and requirements of real-time message processing, specific applications can select different message delivery approaches to achieve the desired level of performance and flexibility.

The study aims to find an efficient compensation method of transmission errors in low bit-rate mobile communications using the H.263 video codec. We suggest a novel error compensation method in the encoder (or transmitter), that can remove visual quality degradation due to spatio-temporal error propagation by utilizing a feedback channel. Our proposed method can reduce the computational complexity of the re-decoding method and FRD (fast re-decoding) method by using the characteristic for non-error-propagated macroblocks. Experimental results show that the proposed error compensation method can give higher coding efficiency compared with the other two non-re-decoding based methods: the reference picture selection (RPS) method and the error tracking (ET) method. Finally, our proposed method requires only 30% of the operations compared to the fast re-decoding (FRD) procedure.

Clustering with a single-system image view is the most commonly used approach to increase throughput of a Web site. There are two types of clustering architecture: centralized IP cluster and distributed IP cluster. In the centralized IP cluster the load balancer distributes incoming requests of clients to an appropriate real server based on load characteristics. However the availability and scalability of the cluster system is low, since this kind of solution creates a single-point-of-failure and the total throughput of the cluster is limited by the performance of the load balancer. We propose the Multicast-based Distributed LVS (MD-LVS), which combines the centralized IP cluster and the distributed IP cluster. There are multiple load balancers, and each of the load balancers has an individual and independent cluster group, which consists of several real servers. This mechanism efficiently can improve scalability and availability of the cluster system, since it is easy to expand the cluster system and may avoid the entire system failure.

Though the areas of secure multicast group architecture, key distribution and sender authentication are under scrutiny, one topic that has not been explored is how to integrate these with multilevel security. Multilevel security is the ability to distinguish subjects according to classification levels, which determines to what degree they can access confidential objects. In the case of groups, this means that some members can exchange messages at a higher sensitivity level than others. The Bell-La Padula model outlines the rules of these multilevel accesses (see Bell, D. and La Padula, L., MITRE Report, M74-244, MTR 2547 v2, 1973). In multicast groups that employ multilevel security, some of these rules are not desirable, so a modified set of rules is developed and is termed differential security. Also, this paper proposes three methods to set up a differentially secure multicast group: (1) naive approach, (2) multiple tree differential security (DiffSec) approach, and (3) single DiffSec tree approach. Our simulation studies show that both single and multiple DiffSec tree approaches offer similar performance in terms of bandwidth consumption, which is significantly better than that of the naive approach. We also discuss the suitability of the schemes, taking into account scalability and implementation issues.

In this paper, we present advanced algorithms to reduce the computation cost of block matching algorithms for motion estimation in video coding. Advanced Multilevel Successive Elimination Algorithms are based on Multilevel Successive Elimination Algorithm for Block Matching Motion Estimation [1] and Successive Elimination Algorithm [2]. Advanced Multilevel Successive Elimination Algorithms consist of three algorithms. The second algorithm is useful not only for Multilevel Successive Elimination Algorithm but also for all kinds of block matching algorithms. The efficiency of the proposed algorithms was verified by experimental results. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

An one-way hash chain generated by the iterative use of a one-way hash function on a secret value has recently been widely employed to develop many practical cryptographic solutions, especially electronic micropayment schemes. In this paper, we propose a new concept called a weighted one-way hash chain. We then proceed to use the new concept to improve in a significant way the performance of micropayment schemes. We also show that the proposed technique is especially useful in implementing micropayment on a resource restrained computing device such as a hand-held computer. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

In this paper, we derive an efficient parallel algorithm to solve the single function coarsest partition problem. This algorithm runs in O(log(2)n) time using O(nlogn) operations on the EREW PRAM with O(n) memory cells used. Compared,vith the previous PRAM algorithms that consume O(n(1+epsilon)) memory cells for some positive constant epsilon >0, our algorithm consumes less memory cells without increasing the total number of operations.

GAHE: Geometry-Aware Embedding for Hyper-Relational Knowledge Graph Representation

Knowledge graphs have proven highly effective for learning representations of entities and relations, with hyper-relational knowledge graphs (HKGs) gaining increased attention due to their enhanced representation capabilities. Each fact in an HKG consists of a main triple supplemented by attribute-value qualifiers that provide additional contextual information. Due to the complexity of hyper-relations, HKGs typically contain complex geometric structures, such as hierarchical, ring, and chain structures, often mixed together. However, previous work mainly embeds HKGs into Euclidean space, limiting their ability to capture these complex geometric structures simultaneously. To address this challenge, we propose a novel model called Geometry Aware Hyper-relational Embedding (GAHE). Specifically, GAHE adopts a multi-curvature geometry-aware approach by modeling HKGs in Euclidean space (zero curvature), hyperbolic space (negative curvature), and hyperspherical space (positive curvature) in a unified framework. In this way, it can integrate space-invariant and space-specific features to accurately capture the diverse structures in HKGs. In addition, GAHE introduces a module termed hyper-relational subspace learning, which allocates multiple sub-relations for each hyper-relation. It enables the exploitation of abundant latent semantic interactions and facilitates the exploration of fine-grained semantics between attribute-value pairs and hyper-relations across multiple subspaces. Furthermore, we provide theoretical guarantees that GAHE is fully expressive and capable of modeling a wide range of semantic patterns for hyper-relations. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that GAHE achieves state-of-the-art results on both hyper-relational and binary-relational benchmarks.

This book presents the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Trust, Privacy and security in Digital Business (TrustBus 2006), held in Kraków, Poland, September 5-7, 2006. The conference continues from previous events held in Zaragoza (2004) and Copenhagen (2005), and maintains the aim of bringing together academic researchers and industry developers to discuss the state of the art in technology for establishing trust, privacy and security in digital business. We thank the attendees for coming to Kraków to participate and debate the new emerging advances in this area. The conference programme included two keynote presentations, one panel session and eight technical papers sessions. The keynote speeches were delivered by Jeremy Ward from Symantec EMEA on the topic of “Building the Information Assurance Community of Purpose”, and by Günter Karjoth from IBM Research - Zurich, with a talk entitled “Privacy Practices and Economics –– From Privacy Policies to Privacy SLAs. ” The subject of the panel discussion was “Is security Without Trust Feasible?” chaired by Leszek T. Lilien from Western Michigan University, USA. The reviewed paper sessions covered a broad range of topics, from access control models to security and risk management, and from privacy and identity management to security protocols. The conference attracted 70 submissions, each of which was assigned to four referees for review. The Programme Committee ultimately accepted 24 papers for inclusion, which were revised based upon comments from their reviews.
