In today’s era, smartphones are used in daily lives because they are ubiquitous and can be customized by installing third-party apps. As a result, the menaces because of these apps, which are potentially risky for user’s privacy, have increased. Information on smartphones is perhaps, more personal than compared to data stored on desktops or computers, making it an easy target for intruders. After Android, the most prevalently used mobile operating system is Apple’s iOS. Both Android and iOS follow permission-based access control to protect user’s privacy. However, the users are unaware whether the app is breaching the user’s privacy. To combat this problem, in the paper we propose a hybrid approach to detect malicious iOS apps based on its permissions. In the first phase, weights have been assigned to app permissions using multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach namely Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and in the second phase machine learning& ensemble learning techniques have been employed to train the classifiers for detecting malicious apps. To test the efficacy of the proposed method dataset comprising 1150 apps from 12 app categories has been used. The results demonstrate the proposed approach improves the efficacy of detecting malicious iOS apps for majority of categories. © 2025 Slovene Society Informatika. All rights reserved.

An Improved Graph Partitioning Algorithm Based Approach for Workflow Offloading in a Fog Environment

The paper addresses the critical problem of application workflow offloading in a fog environment. Resource constrained mobile and Internet of Things devices may not possess specialized hardware to run complex workflows locally and hence, need to offload these tasks to fog nodes. As compared to cloud-based servers, fog nodes can provide responses in a more-timely manner and are preferred for latency-sensitive applications. Workflow applications are characterized by inter-task dependencies and hence, can be readily represented as directed acyclic graphs. Therefore, the proposed offloading solution approach utilizes an improved graph partitioning algorithm based on the Louvain community detection algorithm. The aim of the algorithm is to partition the workflow graph in such a manner that the workflow tasks having high communication costs between them are transferred or offloaded to the same fog node. The benefits of the proposed algorithm have been verified by simulation experiments where it was observed that it results in a lower makespan as compared to the related approaches. © The Institution of Engineers (India) 2024.

Exploration of alzheimer disease using design of experiments

This study examines the use of experimental designs, specifically full and fractional factorial designs, for predicting Alzheimer’s disease with fewer variables. The full factorial design systematically investigates the effects of selected factors, providing a comprehensive analysis of their individual and interactive impacts on Alzheimer’s prediction. On the other hand, the fractional factorial design simplifies the model by selecting key factors and removing non-significant ones. For Alzheimer’s, among all the factors examined, the MMSE (Mini-mental state Examination) score emerged as the most significant, which was further cross-validated using Minitab Software Analysis. Importantly, the findings suggest that the fractional factorial design is a better alternative, particularly when time and cost constraints are present. The results highlight the effectiveness and efficiency of these experimental designs, demonstrating their potential for early detection, prevention, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. By contributing to the expanding knowledge base on experimental designs in medical research, this study emphasizes their crucial role in understanding and combating complex diseases like Alzheimer’s. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of K-doped NaNbO3 correlated with structural defects, optical and polar properties

The swift pace of industrialization in the modern world has intensified the global energy crisis while exacerbating the challenges of water pollution, posing significant threats to the environmental sustainability and human well-being. Substantial endeavors have been undertaken to protect the environment from the detrimental impacts of methylene blue in the wastewater. This study shows the photocatalytic performance of eco-friendly K-modified NaNbO3 catalysts in the degradation of methylene blue dye. Compositions with x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20 have been synthesized using solid-state reaction method. The XRD patterns for all the compositions demonstrate the formation of a single-phase orthorhombic structure with Pbcm space group symmetry. Analysis of the UV–Visible spectra indicates a trend of decreasing band gap from 3.21 eV for x = 0 to 3.01 eV for x = 0.20. High-resolution XPS scans show the presence of additional Nb4+ state along with Nb5+ state for doped samples. The edges of the valence and conduction bands using XPS and UV–Visible spectra, have been determined for each of the samples. The composition with x = 0.10 has shown a maximum degradation efficiency of 96% under UV radiations (300 W Xenon lamp) that aligns with the lowest photoluminescence intensity observed for this sample. An appropriate defect model with the help of band diagrams of these compositions for MB dye degradation and a suitable electron transfer mechanism have been proposed. The scavenger test has been found to validate the role of superoxide ions in the photocatalytic degradation of MB dye. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

SORT-secured optimal routing technique for smart cities using IoTenabled wireless sensor networks

The advancement of smart cities and IoT technologies poses challenges such as the need for eco-friendly solutions and efficient data collection and communication in these environments. The objective is to propose a new architecture for data collection and communication in IoT smart applications, focusing on green IoT solutions and addressing the challenges of quality definition in smart cities. The proposed methods include the Secured Optimal Routing Technique (SORT) using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) with IoT, the CMBS algorithm for IoT sensor cluster formation, the Enhanced Differentiation Search (EDS) algorithm to estimate sensor node trust, and a lightweight signcrypt approach for data encryption. Additionally, the Optimum Decisive Former (ODF) method is used to compute the best route in the IoT platform. The SORT technique is implemented and evaluated using the NS2 tool for network simulation. The performance of the SORT technique is compared with existing techniques, demonstrating its effectiveness in addressing the challenges of data collection, communication, and eco-friendly IoT solutions in smart cities. The study concludes that the proposed SORT technique, along with the CMBS algorithm, EDS algorithm, and lightweight signcrypt approach, contributes to the advancement of intelligent and sustainable smart cities by improving data collection, communication efficiency, and eco-friendliness in IoT applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

THz generation by non-linear mixing of laser and its second order harmonic on CNT array inlaid over dielectric substrate

A network of CNTs embedded on a dielectric substrate is used to transmit two laser beams with frequencies ω1 and ω2 and wave vectors k1 and k2 respectively. These laser pulses cause a localized plasma to develop when they contact with nanotubes. As a result, electrons develop oscillatory velocities. By applying ponderomotive pressure to the electrons, it causes oscillations in the charge density at 2ω1 and ω1-ω2 frequencies. At the frequency 2ω1-ω2, which is in the terahertz (THz) region, the laser exerts a ponderomotive force on the free electrons of carbon nanotubes causing a nonlinear current density. Each nanotube functions as an oscillating electric dipole that emits THz radiation. We establish the governing equation for THz efficiency and its dependence on laser incidence angle, amplitude, nanotube size, and CNT spacing. We obtain maximum peak of THz power at incident angle θ0≈23.5∘. The terahertz power of carbon nanotubes is highly dependent on their radius and length, so as these parameters increase, their terahertz power increases as well. Secure probe-based latency measurement using NTP and PTP for optimized gateway placement in LoRaWAN

The paper presents a novel framework for optimizing LoRaWAN gateway placement to enhance network performance and reliability. By integrating Network Time Protocol (NTP) for global synchronization and Precision Time Protocol (PTP) for local precision, the approach ensures accurate and secure latency measurements. A robust hash algorithm is employed to safeguard the integrity of latency data. The Performance Efficiency Index (PEI) is introduced as a comprehensive metric to evaluate key performance indicators such as latency, throughput, energy efficiency, and packet delivery ratio (PDR). The model incorporates factors like geographical distribution, signal strength, and gateway density to achieve optimal placement. Simulation results demonstrate the framework’s effectiveness in improving network latency, coverage, energy efficiency, and security, providing actionable insights for LoRaWAN-based IoT network design. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's institute of Computer Applications and Management 2025.

Measurement of energy consumption is an important part of the embedded and IoT system designing. Most of these systems are battery operated or have limited power resources, so to design power efficient systems it is imperative to have some mechanism for power or energy estimation. The paper presents a cloud-based power profiling system for embedded devices. The system determines the current by measuring voltage drop across a shunt resistor which is connected in series with the test node. The power measurement data is uploaded on a cloud server using MQTT protocol. This method provides real-time monitoring of the power consumption of the devices under test. A dashboard is built on the cloud platform for real-time monitoring of power-related information about the test device. The purpose of the study is to determine and examine the factors of attitude and intention to use AI-enabled chatbots in the Indian banking sector by extending the technology acceptance model (TAM). Chatbots are relatively new offering that different industries like travel and tourism, insurance, hotels, retail sector, healthcare, and education sector are adopting. To understand the customers’ attitude and intention to use chatbots, the quantitative technique has been used. A total of 220 customers’ responses were analysed and gathered from distributed questionnaires using partial least square equation modelling. As per results, antecedents of attitude towards chatbots are perceived ease of use and personal innovativeness. Perceived ease of use and attitude are significant predictors to intention to use chatbots. The study adds a significant contribution to the existing literature by extending TAM and identifying the factors which affect customers’ attitude and intention to use chatbots in the banking sector, especially in India. Artificial intelligence (AI) often lacks cultural diversity with limited representation of non-Western contexts which results in biased outputs. Addressing this gap, this paper presents a deep learning-based image captioning system specifically for Indian deities, a culturally rich but underrepresented subject in AI research. Due to the lack of benchmark datasets for such a culturally significant imagery, this work introduces the DIVINE 1K dataset. This dataset contains 1,000 images of Indian deities, each annotated with five manually curated captions. To develop an accurate caption model we evaluated several deep learning architectures such as VGG16, ResNet50, ResNet152, InceptionV3, MobileNetV2, and DenseNet201 for feature extraction. Performance is assessed through BLEU, ROUGE, and METEOR scores, with DenseNet201 emerging as the most effective model. This optimized model is subsequently deployed within a mobile application, enabling real-time caption generation for images of Indian deities. This work not only contributes a specialized dataset but also advances culturally inclusive AI by pioneering automated image captioning tailored to Indian iconography, thus bridging a critical gap in AI cultural representation. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
