A Novel Sleep Modulation and Quality Classification Strategy Based EEG Signals and Multi-Scale Attention Deep Learning

Sleep disorders have become the second most prevalent mental health condition globally, posing a significant challenge to public health. Consequently, there is an imperative need for the development of effective, non-pharmacological interventions to enhance sleep quality. In this study, a novel sleep modulation technique utilizing transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is introduced. A specialized stimulation mode is designed by integrating sine waves of varying frequencies, including spindle waveform components. Additionally, to facilitate an accurate evaluation of sleep quality and enable individualized interventions, a multi-scale attention-based deep learning model (MSA-Net) is proposed for sleep quality classification. It consists of a two-branch convolution block (TBC-block), an adaptive feature recalibration (AFR) module, three dense blocks, three attention transition blocks. By extracting the deep features of the electroencephalography (EEG) raw data, the sleep quality classification is realized. Experimental results indicate that the proposed stimulation effectively enhances and stabilizes slow-wave activity, significantly extending the duration of deep sleep and enhancing overall sleep stability. In addition, the MSA-Net demonstrates robust performance, achieving exceptional performance with an overall accuracy of 0.881, F1 score of 0.903, and Kappa score of 0.845, outperforming baseline models across all evaluation metrics. These results demonstrate the potential of combining TENS-based sleep modulation with deep learning techniques, offering an effective framework for enhancing sleep quality and advancing personalized sleep modulation strategies. © 2025 IEEE.

3D visual grounding is a fundamental yet important task in multimedia understanding, which aims to locate a specific object in a complicated 3D scene semantically according to a text description. However, this task requires a large number of annotations of labeled text-object pairs for training, so the scarcity of annotated data has been a key obstacle in this task. To this end, this paper makes the first attempt to introduce and address a new semi-supervised setting, where only a few text-object labels are provided during training. Considering most scene data has no annotation, we explore a new solution for unlabeled 3D grounding by additionally training and transferring knowledge from a correlated task, i.e., 3D captioning. Our main insight is that 3D grounding and captioning are complementary and can be iteratively trained with unlabeled data to provide object and text contexts for each other with pseudo-label learning. Specifically, we propose a novel 3D Cross-Task Teacher-Student Framework (3D-CTTSF) for joint 3D grounding and captioning in the semi-supervised setting, where each branch contains parallel grounding and captioning modules. We first pre-train the two modules of the teacher branch with limited labeled data for warm-up. Then, we train the student branch to mimic the ability of the teacher model and iteratively update both branches with the unlabeled data. In particular, we transfer the learned knowledge between the grounding and captioning modules across two branches to generate and refine the pseudo-labels of unlabeled data for providing reliable supervision. To further improve the quality of the pseudo-labels, we design a cross-task pseudo-label generation scheme, filtering low-quality pseudo-labels at the detection, captioning, and grounding levels, respectively. SepFE:Separable Fusion Enhanced Network for Retinal Vessel Segmentation

The accurate and automatic segmentation of retinal vessels fromfundus images is critical for the early diagnosis and prevention ofmany eye diseases,such as diabetic retinopathy(DR).Existing retinal vessel segmentation approaches based on convolutional neural networks(CNNs)have achieved remarkable ***,we extend a retinal vessel segmentation model with low complexity and high performance based on U-Net,which is one of the most popular *** view of the excellent work of depth-wise separable convolution,we introduce it to replace the standard convolutional *** complexity of the proposed model is reduced by decreasing the number of parameters and calculations required for *** ensure performance while lowering redundant parameters,we integrate the pre-trained MobileNet V2 into the ***,a feature fusion residual module(FFRM)is designed to facilitate complementary strengths by enhancing the effective fusion between adjacent levels,which alleviates extraneous clutter introduced by direct ***,we provide detailed comparisons between the proposed SepFE and U-Net in three retinal image mainstream datasets(DRIVE,STARE,and CHASEDB1).The results show that the number of SepFE parameters is only 3%of U-Net,the Flops are only 8%of U-Net,and better segmentation performance is *** superiority of SepFE is further demonstrated through comparisons with other advanced methods.

For a long time, people have believed that representation problems are one of the bottlenecks in the field of machine learning. Therefore, it is a long-term and exploratory work to study machine learning representation methods. Due to this, we use category theory to study the fusion representation of data dimensionality reduction. We propose the basic concept of category representation for data dimensionality reduction and provide a data dimensionality reduction fusion representation framework. We have conducted research and analysis on algorithms such as PCA, KPCA, and LDA, identified the essential connection between PCA, KPCA, and LDA and proposed a data dimensionality reduction fusion representation algorithm based on a data dimensionality reduction fusion representation framework. Finally, we demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed method through experiments. © 2025 SPIE.

DIG: Improved DINO for Graffiti Detection

Graffiti detection is essential in historic building protection and urban neighborhood management. Graffiti detection has made significant progress in recent years based on the development of deep learning. However, small-scale graffiti, interference from the background, and the false detection of word parts in graffiti make it a challenging problem. This article proposes a Transformer-based high-precision graffiti detection method, namely DIG. Precisely, it consists of three modules: 1) Spatial query selection (SQS), scale-aware IoU loss (SIL);2) Denoising Task with binary contrastive denoising (BCDN);and 3) IoU-guided box denoising (IBD) modules. To detect small-scale graffiti, this paper proposes SIL to help the loss function to perceive small-scale graffiti and large-scale graffiti fairly. To reduce the false detection of word parts, this article presents the SQS module, which integrates spatial information into the query selection process of the Encoder to filter out falsely detected bounding boxes within the graffiti. To reduce the interference from the background, this article introduces a denoising task with BCDN and IBD modules, improving the model’s ability to distinguish graffiti from the background and accurately select appropriate bounding boxes. A large number of experimental results on the STORM dataset show that our method achieves state-of-the-art results with an AP50 of 87.9%. Moreover, DIG achieved competitive results on the FineFM dataset for mask detection. This indicates that DIG can also be conveniently transferred to detect other scenarios. © 2013 IEEE.

Towards Privacy-Aware Causal Structure Learning in Federated Setting

Causal structure learning has been extensively studied and widely used in machine learning and various applications. To achieve an ideal performance, existing causal structure learning algorithms often need to centralize a large amount of data from multiple data sources. However, in the privacy-preserving setting, it is impossible to centralize data from all sources and put them together as a single dataset. To preserve data privacy, federated learning as a new learning paradigm has attached much attention in machine learning in recent years. In this paper, we study a privacy-aware causal structure learning problem in the federated setting and propose a novel federated PC (FedPC) algorithm with two new strategies for preserving data privacy without centralizing data. Specifically, we first propose a novel layer-wise aggregation strategy for a seamless adaptation of the PC algorithm into the federated learning paradigm for federated skeleton learning, then we design an effective strategy for learning consistent separation sets for federated edge orientation. The extensive experiments validate that FedPC is effective for causal structure learning in federated learning setting. © 2023 IEEE.

An Evolutionary Multitasking Algorithm for Efficient Multiobjective Recommendations

Represented by evolutionary algorithms and swarm intelligence algorithms, nature-inspired metaheuristics have been successfully applied to recommender systems and amply demonstrated effectiveness, in particular, for multiobjective recommendation. Owing to the population-based search paradigm, these algorithms can produce a number of recommendation lists, making diverse tradeoffs between multiple metrics and meeting the requirements of accuracy, novelty, diversity, and other user preferences. However, these algorithms are criticized for the low efficiency of the optimization process, especially when the number of users is large. To address this issue, this article proposes an evolutionary multitasking-based recommendation method, where each task corresponds to a user and all the tasks are optimized simultaneously, thus highly improving the efficiency of recommendation. To enhance the convergence speed, all the users are divided into multiple populations according to the similarity between their preferences, where each population evolves with internal knowledge transfer between users, and all the populations evolve with external knowledge transfer between populations. Experimental results on various datasets verify that the proposed method can better balance between multiple metrics than classical and deep neural network-based recommendation methods and exhibits significantly higher efficiency than evolutionary multiobjective optimization-based recommendation methods. © 2024 IEEE.
