Distance histogram has been used for shape representation and retrieval. Though it is efficient and effective, it looses the spatial information of a contour. In this paper, the pixels of a contour are classified into different types, convex, concave and smooth pixels. In addition to distance histograms, two novel descriptors named spatial location distribution (SLD) and spatial distribution entropy (SDE) are introduced. These descriptors have powerful descriptive power for contour with more spatial information. Comparisons are conducted between our method and several other feature descriptors. The results show that the new method is efficient and it provides noticeable improvement to the performance of shape retrieval.

We consider the problem of a searcher that looks, for example, for a lost flashlight in a dusty environment. The search agent finds the flashlight as soon as it crosses the ray emanating from the flashlight, and in order to pick it up, the searcher has to move to the origin of the light beam. First, we give a search strategy for a special case of the ray search-the window shopper problem-, where the ray we are looking for is perpendicular to a known ray. Our strategy achieves a competitive factor of ≈1.059, which is optimal. Then, we consider the search for a ray with an arbitrary position in the plane. We present an online strategy that achieves a factor of ≈22.513, and give a lower bound of ≈17.079. © 2007 Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings. All rights reserved.

Answer extracting based on pattern learning and pattern matching in Chinese question answering system

In the Chinese question answering system, the answer extraction is generally realized by extracting answers from answer sentence pattern which is corresponded to the question. But the extraction of answer sentence pattern greatly depended on expert's language knowledge, so the patterns can't be listed fully that the precision of the answer extraction will be affected. A method that the answer sentence pattern can be obtained by machine learning is proposed in this paper. All types of Chinese question answer pairs are statistically analyzed, the query of question is constructed, and then the corresponding documents are recalled by search engines. Next, the sentence patterns with the maximum weights are selected as the candidate answer sentence pattern by calculating the weight of sentence patterns in corresponding document. At last, the answer to the question is extracted from the Internet based on the answers sentence pattern which has been obtained. The experiment on extracting answer for Chinese factoid question is done. The experiment results make a very good effect that the MRAR value equals 0.28.

Research on passage retrieval in Chinese question answering system

In Chinese Question Answering System, in order to improve the accuracy of the passage retrieval which includes answers, this paper presents a method to compute the weight of passage based on the analysis of current passage retrieval methods. The word frequency of query words and query expansion words in passage, the length of passage;the distribution density and minimum match span of query words and query expansion words in passage are considered. The weight calculation of the answer passage is realized. And candidate passage set is retrieved on the basis of the weight Calculation. The experiment result on passage retrieval shows that this method has good effects that the MRR value equals 0.50.

Agrilnfo: An agricultural information system based on a call centre in China

This paper presents research to develop an agricultural information system based on a call centre (Agrilnfo) by key laboratory for Modern Precision Agriculture System Integration, China Agricultural University. Based on investigations, we analyse user needs and the difficulties involved in developing the system. User needs, architecture, main components, functions and working processes of the system are described. Last, we discuss the piloted effects of Agrilnfo and draw conclusions. Valuable insights into the use of the call centre as a tele‐consultation tool in agriculture are highlighted. Agrilnfo was piloted in the north of China. It shows that Agrilnfo can remove barriers by transmitting agricultural information to rural areas and provide a multilayer information service to match different farmer demands.

We propose a new 3D image segmentation method based on prediction, block-matching and partial 3D constraint in this paper. The algorithm only needs to set a few key points in the first image. We use intensity information and block-matching to optimize the initial condition, and consider the 3D object's characteristics at the same time. By using the partial 3D constraints we can get the result of 2D and 3D smoothness. Experimental results validate its usefulness in 3D image segmentation.

FAQ(Frequently-asked Question) is a good question and answer model to realize business advisory system in restricted domain.A FAQ question answering system model is presented in this *** the help of the idea of ontology, a knowledge base is constructed in the *** the help of language KDML (Knowledge Database Mark-up Language) of HowNet,the domain ontology and the relationship of it are defined and described, and the fusion of domain knowledge base (Domain HowNet) and common knowledge base(HowNet) is *** this basis, a question similarity calculation method, which makes use of the characteristics of the domain question and combines lexical relationship, syntactic interdependent relationship and the semantic relationship of domains among question sentences, is *** based on the question similarity calculation, retrieval of related question from the candidate question set and extraction of answers can be implemented with this *** result of Yunnan tourism question-answer model experiment shows that this method is feasible and effective.

Existing video research incorporates the use of relevance feedback based on user-dependent interpretations to improve the retrieval results. In this paper, we segregate the process of relevance feedback into 2 distinct facets: (a) recall-directed feedback;and (b) precision-directed feedback. The recall-directed facet employs general features such as text and high level features (HLFs) to maximize efficiency and recall during feedback, making it very suitable for large corpuses. The precision-directed facet on the other hand uses many other multimodal features in an active learning environment for improved accuracy. Combined with a performance-based adaptive sampling strategy, this process continuously re-ranks a subset of instances as the user annotates. Experiments done using TRECVID 2006 dataset show that our approach is efficient and effective. Copyright 2007 ACM.

With the deeply research on intrusion detection techniques and the widely use of intrusion detection products, the study of evaluation techniques of intrusion detection systems became important. In the paper, relative works of the evaluation of intrusion detection systems was introduced. The primary aspects of intrusion detection systems in an evaluation were discussed. An evaluation system for intrusion detection systems was proposed. In the system, a supervisor module controls the whole system. The supervisor module schedules the traffic control module and the attack emulation module. The data in the evaluation environment are recorded and input to the evaluation module. The functions such as emulation of network traffic and host usage, emulation of attacks and evaluation report generation are implemented.

In this paper,volume models are obtained from closed surface models by an accurate voxelization method which can handle the hidden cavities. This kind of 3D binary images is then converted to gray-level images by a fast Euclidean distance transform (EDT).Moment invariants (MIs) which are invariant shape descriptors under similarity transformations,are then computed based on the gray images. Applications in shape analysis area such as principal axis determination,skeleton and medial axis extraction,and shape retrieval can be carried out base on EDT and MIs.
