In this paper, a novel error concealment (EC) method for compressed stereoscopic image pairs is presented, which contains a new binocular EC mode and an improved monocular EC mode. The proposed algorithm selects appropriate EC mode to conceal the error block (EB) in the stereoscopic image according to the local characteristic of the EB. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme has good subjective and objective EC performance in stereoscopic images as compared to monocular mode.

Traditional video synopsis methods model the processing into an optimization formula where relations among objects such as collision cost are utilized while entire re-calculation is introduced under each possible temporal shift. Unlike the pairwise cost optimization, we propose a low-complexity and efficient online synopsis method where each tube is processed independently. Without tubes' comparison, the rearrangement is accomplished by a simple projection strategy and an updating projection matrix which records the newest information of the moving space. Furthermore, buffer and a predefined fitness condition also help to increase spatial and temporal utilization. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to other synopsis methods in the processing speed and temporal consistency.

Since the lighting conditions in strong contrast regions between the light and dark cant be estimated accurately by traditional center/surround Retinex algorithm, the over-enhancement and color distortion may exist. In view of this, combining with the human visual characteristics, a color image enhancement algorithm based on tone-preserving was proposed. A determination function was added to the bilateral filter to estimate illuminance image more accurately and weaken over-enhancement. According to human visual masking effect, the improved gamma correction was utilized to correct the brightness of illumination image adaptively and the local contrast of reflection image obtained by division was enhanced based on local statistics. Besides, the final enhanced image was obtained by combining illumination image with reflection image, which can make image appear more natural. Compared with other similar algorithms from both subjective and objective aspects, the results show that this method being applied to low-contrast color image enhancement can not only improve image clarity, but reduce color distortion.

Deconvolution has become one of the most used methods for improving spectral resolution, and blind deconvolution as a typical method has been researched widely. However, the predefined point spread function (PSF) used in blind deconvolution method is not known exactly in practice. In general, the PSF is estimated simultaneously from the observed spectrum, but it becomes difficult when the spectroscopic data are polluted by strong noise. In this paper, we present a deconvolution method used to improve the resolution of THz spectrum. In the method, the energy function is constructed, which includes the likelihood term, Total variation of spectrum term and L2 norm of the PSF term. The PSF is modeled as a parametric function combination with the a priori knowledge about the characteristics of the instrumental response. The spectrum and the parameter of PSF are obtained by minimizing the energy functional using alternate minimization approach. Experimental results are shown to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method used for THz spectrum.

Based on the analysis of color histogram for image retrieval, a new descriptor, bit-plane distribution feature (BPDF), is proposed in this paper. The image is firstly divided into eight bit-planes. Meantime, the Gray code of bit-planes is used to avoid the effect of changes in the intensity values on bit-planes. Then, according to the distribution of each bit-plane, a feature vector is constructed by the first four significant planes which contain most of the structural information of the image. Finally, the Mahalanobis distance is adopted to measure the similarity because of the correlation between the concerned vectors after designing a correlation-weighted matrix. Comparisons are conducted between BPDF and other descriptors. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides more significantly retrieval results than the traditional ones.

An improved outdoor camera calibration method based on Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) is proposed in this paper. GPS coordinate system is introduced to establish world coordinate system in the calibration procedure. According to the characteristics of GPS coordinate converted to plane coordinate and the camera calibration model, we establish the mapping relations of reference points between image plane coordinate and the world coordinate. Further, we consider the world coordinate error, set the world coordinates as the measure quantities, use the method of EKF to get the optimal estimation of intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters, in EKF the camera's intrinsic and extrinsic parameters are set as state variables, the transformation equations of image coordinate to the world coordinate are set as the measurement equations, and we let the observed feature points' image coordinates and corresponding world coordinates as the input of the filter. Experimental results confirmed that the proposed method with high precision.

With the development of economy and society, people become more fluid, and in the meanwhile there is increasing demand for medical service in mobile environment. Especially when an outdoor accident or Paroxysmal disease happens, the earliest and most effective rescue is offered not by the medical staffs, but by people themselves. At that moment, if the first-aid instruction can be provided by medical experts in time, casualties are expected to be minimized. In combination with 3G communication network, streaming media technology, E-expert system as well as the knowledge about medical diagnostics and emergent treatment, this paper explored a mobile self-rescue system for medical emergency. This system can connect the doctors and patients who are physically separated, and thus help the patients realize self-rescue through the 3G-based mobile communications at anytime and anywhere. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Nowadays, more and more families are willing to buy 3D TV to improve their watching experience. Stereo perception produced by watching 3D images or videos brings strong immersive watching experience to users. However, accumulated vision fatigue confuses users a lot after watching 3D TV for a long time. When watching 3D images, controlled by past recognition experience and visual attention mechanism, gaze point of two eyes is changing among different objects which have different depth of field. The eye movement in this changing process is called vergence. Vergence can be defined as movement of our eyes in opposite directions to locate the area of interest on the fovea and accommodation as alteration of the lens to obtain and maintain the area of interest focused on the fovea. So the more frequently the vergence process occurs, the more uncomfortable we feel. We expect to obtain several eye movement patterns, which can be considered as some typical visual attention patterns, by building a top-down recognition and visual attention model and then applying some clustering methods to find them. So we use an eye tracker to record eye movement data and then model it as a bayesian network model. The generative model is based on beta process and we build an Autoregression-HMM model to describe the relationship between latent eye movement patterns and eye movement data. To uncover parameters which represent different eye movement patterns in this model, we use MCMC method to calculate them with iterative computations. In this work, some different latent patterns existed in the sequential eye movement data can be revealed. After analyzing these patterns, we are able to find out some similarities and differences of visual attention models between different people watching the same image or between different images viewed by the same one. image dehazing algorithm based on dark channel prior has been proved to be effective, but it cannot still guarantee accurate transmission. To solve this problem, we firstly propose a more reasonable estimation of atmospheric light, because bias in the atmospheric light estimation will cause an inaccurate transmission. Secondly, we improve the estimation of transmission in bright area so as to alleviate color distortion. After image recovery, we carry out denoising to improve the image quality. Finally, we use a blind image quality assessment method based on property of Human Visual System, and the experimental results show that this improved algorithm is more effective.

Non-invasive gaze estimation from only eye images captured by camera is a challenging problem due to various eye shapes, eye structures and image qualities. Recently, CNN network has been applied to directly regress eye image to gaze direction and obtains good performance. However, generic approaches are susceptible to bias and variance highly relating to different individuals. In this paper, we study the person-specific bias when applying generic methods on new person. And we introduce a novel appearance-based deep neural network integrating meta-learning to reduce the person-specific bias. Given only a few person-specific calibration images collected in normal calibration process, our model adapts quickly to test person and predicts more accurate gaze directions. Experiments on public MPIIGaze dataset and Eyediap dataset show our approach has achieved competitive accuracy to current state-of-the-art methods and are able to alleviate person-specific bias problem. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
