Ferroelectrics are essential in low-dimensional memory devices for multi-bit storage and high-density integration. A polar structure is a necessary premise for ferroelectricity, mainly existing in compounds. However, it is usually rare in elemental materials, causing a lack of spontaneous electric polarization. Here, we report an unexpected room-temperature ferroelectricity in few-chain Te nanowires. Out-of-plane ferroelectric loops and domain reversal are observed by piezoresponse force microscopy. Through density functional theory, we attribute the ferroelectricity to the ion-displacement created by the interlayer interaction between lone pair electrons. Ferroelectric polarization can induce a strong field effect on the transport along the Te chain, supporting a self-gated field-effect transistor. It enables a nonvolatile memory with high in-plane mobility, zero supply voltage, multilevel resistive states, and a high on/off ratio. Our work provides new opportunities for elemental ferroelectrics with polar structures and paves a way towards applications such as low-power dissipation electronics and computing-in-memory devices. © 2022, CC BY.

Many-body localization in a non-Hermitian quasi-periodic system

In the present study, the interplay among interaction, topology, quasiperiodicity, and non-Hermiticity is studied. The hard-core bosons model on a one-dimensional lattice with asymmetry hoppings and quasiperiodic onsite potentials is selected. This model, which preserves time-reversal symmetry (TRS), will exhibit three types of phase transition: real-complex transition of eigenenergies, topological phase transition and many-body localization (MBL) phase transition. For the real-complex transition, it is found that the imaginary parts of the eigenenergies are always suppressed by the MBL. Moreover, by calculating the winding number, a topological phase transition can be revealed with the increase of potential amplitude, and we find that the behavior is quite different from the single-particle systems. Based on our numerical results, we conjecture that these three types of phase transition occur at the same point in the thermodynamic limit, and the MBL transition of quasiperiodic system and disordered system should belong to different universality classes. Finally, we demonstrate that these phase transitions can profoundly affect the dynamics of the non-Hermitian many-body system. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Off-Policy Q-Learning for Anti-Interference Control of Multi-Player Systems ⁎

This paper develops a novel off-policy game Q-learning algorithm to solve the anti-interference control problem for discrete-time linear multi-player systems using only data without requiring system matrices to be known. The primary contribution of this paper lies in that the Q-learning strategy employed in the proposed algorithm is implemented in an off-policy policy iteration approach other than on-policy learning due to the well-known advantages of off-policy Q-learning over on-policy Q-learning. All of the players work hard together for the goal of minimizing their common performance index meanwhile defeating the disturbance that tries to maximize the specific performance index, and finally they reach the Nash equilibrium of the game resulting in satisfying disturbance attenuation condition. In order to find the solution to the Nash equilibrium, the anti-interference control problem is first transformed into an optimal control problem. Then an off-policy Q-learning algorithm is proposed in the framework of typical adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) and game architecture, such that control policies of all players can be learned using only measured data. Comparative simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The photonic hook (PH) is a new type of curved light beam, which has promising applications in various fields such as nanoparticle manipulation, super-resolution imaging, and so forth. Herein, we proposed a new approach of utilizing patchy microcylinders for the generation of PHs. Numerical simulation based on the finite-difference time-domain method was used to investigate the field distribution characteristics of the PHs. By rotating the patchy microcylinder, PHs with different curvatures can be effectively generated, and the PH with a bending angle of 28.4◦ and a full-width-half-maximum of 0.36 λ can be obtained from 1 µm-diameter patchy microcylinders. © 2021, CC BY.

The extensive deployment of wireless networks in industrial settings has led to a surge in wireless-connected devices, presenting formidable security challenges. Traditional encryption approaches, relying on cryptographic keys without binding to physical hardware details, are highly susceptible to cloning attacks when the keys are compromised. This paper presents a novel solution: a Channel State information-based Physical Unclonable Function (CSI-PUF) for wireless devices. By leveraging CSI, it generates a unique device identity. A meticulously designed fuzzy extractor algorithm is incorporated. In the enrollment phase, random numbers are generated and encoded with BCH error correction codes. During the reconstruction phase, errors in the CSI-PUF output bit sequence are transferred to the BCH-encoded random numbers. This allows for error elimination through decoding, safeguarding the confidentiality of CSI. A prototype WiFi terminal authentication system based on this CSI-PUF framework is developed and implemented. Experimental evaluations in an interference-free industrial control environment reveal that the system attains an average authentication success rate exceeding 95%. This significantly bolsters the security of WiFi-enabled devices, indicating that the CSI-PUF can effectively enhance the authentication security of wireless devices in industrial scenarios. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Astragali Radix (AR) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) widely used worldwide for its nutritional and medicinal benefits, but it is facing increasing quality issues. This article developed a novel method for quickly and accurately identifying AR's quality. In this study, spectroscopic techniques combined with data-driven soft independent modelling of class analogy (DD-SIMCA) and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) were used to determine AR's geographic origins and predict its antioxidant activity. The results showed that preprocessed near-infrared (NIR) or raw visible (VIS) spectra with DD-SIMCA could accurately identify AR's authentic regions, with 100 % sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Additionally, XAI identified 80 features from NIR spectra and 33 from VIS spectra, both strongly correlated with AR's antioxidant activity. Fusing these features and integrating them with support vector machine led to significantly better model performance, with Rp2 of 0.9760, RPDP of 6.7447, RMSEP of 1.3824, and MAEP of 1.1088. Overall, this study provided valuable insights for the quality assessment of TCMs and other medicinal plants. © 2025 The Authors

OTHR multitarget tracking with a GMRF model of ionospheric parameters

The ionosphere is the propagation medium for radio waves transmitted by an over-The-horizon radar (OTHR). Ionospheric parameters, typically, virtual ionospheric heights (VIHs), are required to perform coordinate registration for OTHR multitarget tracking and localization. The inaccuracy of ionospheric parameters has a significant deleterious effect on the target localization of OTHR. Therefore, to improve the localization accuracy of OTHR, it is important to develop accurate models and estimation methods of ionospheric parameters and the corresponding target tracking algorithms. In this paper, we consider the variation of the ionosphere with location and the spatial correlation of the ionosphere in OTHR target tracking. We use a Gaussian Markov random field (GMRF) to model the VIHs, providing a more accurate representation of the VIHs for OTHR target tracking. Based on expectation-conditional maximization and GMRF modeling of the VIHs, we propose a novel joint optimization solution, called ECM-GMRF, to perform target state estimation, multipath data association and VIHs estimation simultaneously. In ECM-GMRF, the measurements from both ionosondes and OTHR are exploited to estimate the VIHs, leading to a better estimation of the VIHs which improves the accuracy of data association and target state estimation, and vice versa. While immune repertoire(IR) dynamics encode critical disease signatures, existing models fail to capture the non-equilibrium processes that governing clonal selection and somatic hypermutation (SHM). We develop a biophysical framework that mathematically reconstructs IR evolution through energy landscape optimization, where 1) clonal emergence probabilities map to metastable states, 2) repertoire transitions obey non-equilibrium dynamics, and 3) inter-IR distances quantify the distribution transformation costs via optimal transport theory. This model enables macroscopic immune state detection from 10k cells by resolving critical fluctuations in sparse sampling regimes. Experimental validation across murine/human cohorts demonstrates precise unsupervised stratification of immune stages and disease states without prior clinical annotations. By bridging stochastic SHM kinetics with deterministic repertoire shifts, our approach establishes quantitative metrics for tracking immunological trajectories and pathological progression. This paradigm shift from static pattern recognition to dynamic process decoding empowers sensitive immunomonitoring and personalized therapeutic design through ultra-low-input clinical sampling.
