This paper presents a new scheme for optimal packetization of scalable multimedia data over lossy network. By assigning an unequal amount of forward error correction (FEC) bits to each segment of transmission packets, the proposed algorithm protects a progressive bitstream generated by a three-dimensional set partitioning in hierarchical trees (3-D SPIHT) algorithm. The partical swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to reasonably allocate bits between source coding and channel coding across packets. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides close to optimal average peak signal-to-noise ratio performance and that its'running time is significantly lower than that of previously known solution. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper proposes a novel global stereo matching method using aggregated likelihoods and multi-scale priors. The likelihoods of dense stereo correspondences as data term can be robustly expressed by aggregated matching costs based on Weber feature descriptors in an asymmetrical linear filtering model. The multi-scale priors on disparity surface are designed to capture scene smooth term from larger neighborhood besides 4-connected neighborhood. The presented stereo approach being relatively simple does not rely on image segmentation and any scene semantic analysis. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed stereo matching algorithm can produce the dense smooth disparity results comparable to those of excellent stereo matching techniques. © 2012 IEEE.

To regulate the transmit-power and enhance the total throughput, a novel Transmit Power Control Game (TPCG) algorithm and an adaptive Modulation TPCG (M-TPCG) algorithm which combine bandwidth allocation, adaptive modulation and transmit-power control based on Space Time Block Coding (STBC) OFDM-CDMA system are designed and a cross-layer framework of database sharing is proposed. Simulation results show that the TPCG algorithm can regulate their transmitter powers and enhance the total throughput effectively, M-TPCG algorithm can achieve maximal system throughput. The performance of the cognitive radio system is improved obviously.

This paper proposes a robust piecewise planar multiview stereo (MVS) approach specifically designed for urban scenes. These architectural scenes are problematic for traditional computer vision methods. In our work, we focus on exploiting some useful constraints of artificial structures such as piecewise coplanarity and boundaries of superpixels. Firstly, we reconstruct quasi-dense 3D point clouds of urban scenes using patches-based MVS (PMVS) method. Secondly, a set of 3D candidate planes are generated by the obtained point clouds without any assumption on the normals of planes, unlike famous Manhattan-world assumption. Then, we segment multi-view images with watershed algorithm and modify the contours of superpixels by the classical Douglas-Peucker approximation algorithm to fit the contours to the boundaries of objects in urban scenes as much as possible. Finally, we use the candidate planes as labels and superpixels as nodes to formulate our Markov Random Field (MRF) optimization problem, then a piecewise planar depth map for each view is recovered by solving the optimization problem using graph-cuts. Experiments show that our method outperforms previous approaches in terms of accuracy. © 2011 IEEE.

In distributed video coding (DVC), efficient compression is achieved by exploiting source statistics at the decoder only, which is radically different from conventional video coding. The pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv video coding is a kind of typical distributed video coding scheme, in which the encoder can be very simple and the complexity of the coder is transferred to the decoder. The performance of pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv video codec is greatly dependent on quality of side information and reconstruction arithmetic. In this paper we propose an improved method of pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv video coding based on side information estimate and decoding reconstruction at the decoder. The results of simulation tests show that better visual quality and average 1.5dB gain can be achieved by applying the proposed method.

This letter proposes a novel method of compressed video super-resolution reconstruction based on MAP-POCS (Maximum Posterior Probability-Projection Onto Convex Set). At first assuming the high-resolution model subject to Poisson-Markov distribution, then constructing the projecting convex based on MAP. According to the characteristics of compressed video, two different convexes are constructed based on integrating the inter-frame and intra-frame information in the wavelet-domain. The results of the experiment demonstrate that the new method not only outperforms the traditional algorithms on the aspects of PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio), MSE (Mean Square Error) and reconstruction vision effect, but also has the advantages of rapid convergence and easy extension.

Head-related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) refer to the spectral filtering from sound sources to listeners' eardrums or ear canals. As an effective model structure, the degree of the IIR filter approximation of the HRTFs, whose design and implementation is a specific spectrum function approximation process, is much lower than that of the FIR. Based on the assessment of HRTFs different importance for sound sources recognition in different spectrum bands, and associated with some perspectives of psychoacoustics in spatial hearing, adaptive and revalued coding genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to the approximation of the HRTFs zero-pole model. The results show that, on an average, the performance of adaptive GA is better than that of the traditional GA. ©2008 IEEE.

There are two main types of tests to assess one's bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, which are writing tests and scenario tests. However, these two methods are subjective and time-consuming and not suitable for large-scale testing. The paper proposed a new assess method to assess bodily-kinesthetic intelligence based on the writing intelligence test items. The method is designed with the computer virtual reality technology. The result shows the method can get better reliability and validity. And the evaluation process is easier to realize. © 2014 WIT Press.

A new object tracking scheme for multi-camera surveillance with non-overlapping views is proposed in this paper. Brightness transfer function (BTF) is used to establish relative appearance correspondence between different views. Mixtures of probabilistic principal component analysis (MPPCA) is incooperated to learn the subspace of brightness transfer function with the concern to deal with multiple different brightness areas in a scene. The incremental major color spectrum histogram (IMCSH) is used as similarity measure for reliable matching. In order to introduce effective text-retrieval technologies into content-based image retrieval, a novel method based on string-matching technology was presented incorporating the different sensitivity along variant directions of human visual system. The image is firstly divided into non-overlapped blocks and sub-feature is extracted according to the human visual feature. Then, a novel descriptor is defined. Based on which, the sub-features is mapping into characters and the image into the text. Finally, the technology of the character string matching is adopted as the similarity measurement. Meantime, the situation information of character is considered, an adjusted method is proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed method has sound and robust retrieval performance. © 2009 IEEE.
