Metal implants are one of the culprits for image quality degradation in CT imaging, introducing so-called metal artifacts. With the help of the virtual-monochromatic imaging technique, dual-energy CT has been proven to be effective in metal artifact reduction. However, the virtual monochromatic images with suppressed metal artifacts show reduced CNR compared to polychromatic images. To remove metal artifacts on polychromatic images, we propose a dual-energy NMAR (deNMAR) algorithm in this paper that adds material decomposition to the widely used NMAR framework. The dual energy sinograms are first decomposed into water and bone sinograms, and metal regions are replaced with water on the reconstructed material maps. Prior sinograms are constructed by polyenergetically forward projecting the material maps with corresponding spectra, and they are used to guide metal trace interpolation in the same way as in the NMAR algorithm. We performed experiments on authentic human body phantoms, and the results show that the proposed deNMAR algorithm achieves better performance in tissue restoration compared to other compelling methods. Tissue boundaries become clear around metal implants, and CNR rises to 2.58 from ~1.70 on 80 kV images compared to other dual-energy-based algorithms.

The appearance analysis and counting of peripheral blood leukocytes can assist the diagnosis of blood diseases such as leukemia. Therefore, it is necessary to automatically extract leukocytes from blood smear images. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end peripheral blood leukocyte image segmentation method based on fully convolutional neural network, which can not only encode multi-scale contextual information, but also capture clear boundary information through decoding. Specifically, the proposed method first utilizes the context-aware feature encoder with residual convolutions to extract a set of multi-scale features. Then, a refinement module of parallel dilated convolutions with multiple dilation rates for expanding the receptive field of the feature maps is introduced to aggregate contextual information. Finally, clear prediction results are reconstructed by the context-aware feature decoder and skip connections. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on two publicly available datasets. © 2020 IEEE.

Accurate segmentation of liver tumors is an important guarantee for the success of liver cancer surgery, where convolutional network has been a type of popular method. However, the performance of the traditional convolutional network is limited by the network depth. To improve the accuracy of liver tumor segmentation, we propose a cascaded deep fully convolutional network (DFCN) which uses ResNet as the basis network followed by side output layer in the upsampling stage to fuse multi-scale image features. For better localizing the liver tumors, the segmentation result is further refined by a fully connected conditional random field. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves higher segmentation accuracy than several state-of-the-art methods. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Hand hygiene is a standard six-step hand-washing action proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, there is no good way to supervise medical staff to do hand hygiene, which brings the potential risk of disease spread. Existing action assessment works usually make an overall quality prediction on an entire video. However, the internal structures of hand hygiene action are important in hand hygiene assessment. Therefore, we propose a novel fine-grained learning framework to perform step segmentation and key action scorer in a joint manner for accurate hand hygiene assessment. Existing temporal segmentation methods usually employ multi-stage convolutional network to improve the segmentation robustness, but easily lead to over-segmentation due to the lack of the long-range dependence. To address this issue, we design a multi-stage convolution-transformer network for step segmentation. Based on the observation that each hand-washing step involves several key actions which determine the hand-washing quality, we design a set of key action scorers to evaluate the quality of key actions in each step. In addition, there lacks a unified dataset in hand hygiene assessment. Therefore, under the supervision of medical staff, we contribute a video dataset that contains 300 video sequences with fine-grained annotations. Extensive experiments on the dataset suggest that our method well assesses hand hygiene videos and achieves outstanding performance. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This study improves a classifier of the support vector machine (SVM) by optimizing its parameters by adjusting cockroach swarm optimization (CSO). Classification system design includes data inputs, pre-process, and classification. The relief technique selects the feature subset, and the kernel parameters used as input for the system. The feature selection and classification of data sets were figured out by the combination of ICSO and SVM with its optimized parameters synchronous. Simulation results of the proposed scheme are compared with other systems, e.g., GA-SVM, PSO-SVM, and CSO-SVM, which show that the proposed project can achieve better classification accuracy than the different algorithms. It is promising that the proposed scheme can be applied to high-dimensional data classification, such as image classification, signal classification. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2021.

ATASI-Net: An Efficient Sparse Reconstruction Network for Tomographic SAR Imaging with Adaptive Threshold

Tomographic SAR technique has attracted remarkable interest for its ability of three-dimensional resolving along the elevation direction via a stack of SAR images collected from different cross-track angles. The emerged compressed sensing (CS)-based algorithms have been introduced into TomoSAR considering its super-resolution ability with limited samples. However, the conventional CS-based methods suffer from several drawbacks, including weak noise resistance, high computational complexity, and complex parameter fine-tuning. Aiming at efficient TomoSAR imaging, this paper proposes a novel efficient sparse unfolding network based on the analytic learned iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (ALISTA) architecture with adaptive threshold, named Adaptive Threshold ALISTA-based Sparse Imaging Network (ATASI-Net). The weight matrix in each layer of ATASI-Net is pre-computed as the solution of an offline optimization problem, leaving only two scalar parameters to be learned from data, which significantly simplifies the training stage. In addition, adaptive threshold is introduced for each azimuth-range pixel, enabling the threshold shrinkage to be not only layer-varied but also element-wise. Moreover, the final learned thresholds can be visualized and combined with the SAR image semantics for mutual feedback. Finally, extensive experiments on simulated and real data are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Federated learning (FL) for histopathology image segmentation involving multiple medical sites plays a crucial role in advancing the field of accurate disease diagnosis and treatment. However, it is still a task of great challenges due to the sample imbalance across clients and large data heterogeneity from disparate organs, variable segmentation tasks, and diverse distribution. Thus, we propose a novel FL approach for histopathology nuclei and tissue segmentation, FedSODA, via synthetic-driven cross-assessment operation (SO) and dynamic stratified-layer aggregation (DA). Our SO constructs a cross-assessment strategy to connect clients and mitigate the representation bias under sample imbalance. Our DA utilizes layer-wise interaction and dynamic aggregation to diminish heterogeneity and enhance generalization. The effectiveness of our FedSODA has been evaluated on the most extensive histopathology image segmentation dataset from 7 independent datasets. Semantic communication (SC) is an emerging intelligent paradigm, offering solutions for various future applications like metaverse, mixed reality, and the Internet of Everything. However, in current SC systems, the construction of the knowledge base (KB) faces several issues, including limited knowledge representation, frequent knowledge updates, and insecure knowledge sharing. Fortunately, the development of the large AI model (LAM) provides new solutions to overcome the above issues. Here, we propose a LAM-based SC framework (LAM-SC) specifically designed for image data, where we first apply the segment anything model (SAM)-based KB (SKB) that can split the original image into different semantic segments by universal semantic knowledge. Then, we present an attention-based semantic integration (ASI) to weigh the semantic segments generated by SKB without human participation and integrate them as the semanticaware image. Additionally, we propose an adaptive semantic compression (ASC) encoding to remove redundant information in semantic features, thereby reducing communication overhead. Finally, through simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the LAM-SC framework and the possibility of applying the LAM-based KB in future SC paradigms. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. To alleviate the problems of slow speed and weak correction ability of existing license plate correction methods under complex conditions, this paper presents a faster license plate positioning method based on the color component combination and color region fusion and develops a more accurate correction algorithm of blue license plate using probabilistic Hough transform and perspective transform. The proposed methods utilize the characteristics of white characters on the blue background of the Chinese license plate. Color component combination in HSV and RGB color spaces and image thresholding are first performed to obtain the background region of the blue license plate and its character region. Then, both regions are fused to obtain complete and accurate license plate region. And finally, edge detection, probabilistic Hough transform, and perspective transform are performed to achieve rapid license plate correction. Experimental results show that average correction time of blue license plate obtained by the proposed method is 0.023 s, and the average correction rate is 95.0%. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.
