This paper reports a microfluidic system for assessing frying oil degradation. The hydrodynamic focusing microfluidic device developed for this purpose generates water-in-oil droplets. By correlating droplet size and the widely accepted oil quality metric, the total polar compound (TPM), it was proven that the device is capable of evaluating frying oil degradation. Compared to existing bulky instruments and methods, this device and measurement technique are fast, simple, and cost-effective.

This paper presented the design, simulation, fabrication and evaluation of the discrete triple-finger end effectors. In the design, three cantilevers were considered as the finger of end effectors. Tungsten tipped probes were used to pick and place the micro-objects. The cantilevers were driven by piezoelectric ceramic transducer (PZT). In the simulation, the finite element analysis had been used to optimize the whole device and analyze the stress of the model. The total deformation and the stress had been worked out to assist the fabrication. With the fabrication of the device, the triple-finger end effectors had been assembled to manipulate the borosilicate glass spheres of different size. Two-layered structures were also built with the discrete triple-finger end effectors. The maximum stroke of every probe was 70 μm. Fine positioning was achieved by the use of piezoelectric actuation. The manipulation of micro-spheres had been carried out to show applied range of the triple-finger device with piezoelectric actuator. This device could manipulate the spheres of the size from 20-40 μm and could place them to the target place in 1 s.

This paper presented a method of electro deposition of calcium alginate for cell 3D Printing. Alginate gel (calcium alginate) was introduced as printing material by electro-depositing. An ITO glass was set as cathode and a metal needle was used as anode. A DC current was applied to the electrodes. The calcium alginate was generated on the surface of anode, which is immersed in mixed solution of sodium alginate and CaCO 3 . The thickness of gel, which is produced on the anode surface, increases along with enlargement of current. At last, we mixed cells in the sodium alginate solution (1%) with suspended CaCO 3 particles (0.5%) to observe the growth situation of yeast cells and osteoblast. The experiment result shown the call will be alive in 3 days.

Harvesting energy from ambient environment as a power source has attracted a wide attention now. However, it meets with difficulties of achieving high output performance under low excitation frequency. This paper presents a low-frequency hybrid energy harvester with high output performance based on frequency-up-conversion (FUC) approach. Under the strike of electromagnetic harvesting suspension structure, the PVDF cantilevers can operate at their resonant frequency with larger amplitude. The power output and energy conversion efficiency can be improved significantly at low frequency excitation. For an excitation acceleration of 0.5g, the peak voltage output of electromagnetic part can reach to 1.9 V at driving frequency of 23.6 Hz. In addition, the peak voltage of PVDF cantilever increases from 30 mV to 3 V and the working frequency increase from 23.6 Hz to 60.6 Hz by using FUC approach.

This paper presented three dimensional (3-D) micro-spheres assembly using chopsticks manipulator. There were two cantilevers in the manipulator. The cantilevers were driven by piezoelectric ceramic transducer (PZT). There was a flexural hinge providing the fulcrum in the cantilevers. The rebounding mechanism was also included in the manipulator. Tungsten tipped probes were used to fix in the cantilevers to grip the spheres. CCD sensors, microscopes, and positioning tables were integrated in the experiment setup. The stroke of the two probes was from 0-120 pm. Releasing precision of the spheres had been controlled by accelerated velocity of the manipulator driven by PZT. In the 3-D micro-spheres assembly, the borosilicate glass spheres had been manipulated into different layers. The diameter of the spheres was from 20-40 pm. Because of the scale effect, the diameter 20 pm ones had been assembled into three-layer structure. The diameter 40 pm ones had been assembled into two-layer structure.

Fertilization performed by intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI) using a piezo unit is recognized as the most practical technique not only for endangered species but also for humans. However what depresses us is the toxicity of mercury which may pose a bad influence on the health of humans and the competence of mouse oocytes. This limitation confines the use of this technique in hospitals and laboratories. What`s more, outcomes gained by the substitutes for mercury reducing the lateral oscillation is no match for mercury. Under this circumstance, a modified piezo-driven ICSI methodology, eliminating the application of mercury, is proposed in this paper used for the cleavage of mouse oocytes. By means of this modified methodology, a desirable result of cleavage for the cellular piercing was gained, a subtle lateral vibration of injection pipette smaller than its outer diameter obtained with the appropriate frequency and voltage. In view of the accomplishments we have acquired and the enhancements of manufacture for pipettes, this method will have a tremendous potential in hospitals and laboratories.
