In this paper, we have proposed a novel time-frequency analysis method implementing adaptive variational mode decomposition (AVMD) and Wigner-Ville Distribution (WVD) to visualize the local features of ship radiated noise. Unlike the traditional methods are invalid under low signal to noise ratio (SNR), the proposed method is suitable for constructing time-frequency (TF) image with the capability of mining the local feature information accurately. Firstly, we employ complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) on the raw signal to determine the numbers of variational modes which is equal to intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) numbers. Secondly, we perform VMD algorithm to extract the local features absolutely by decomposing the raw signal into IMFs, where we set the IMFs gained by CEEMDAN as the input parameter of VMD. Finally, we adopt Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) to draw TF signatures of all the IMFs, then superpose them to reconstruct the objected signal that can solve the cross-item problem. We have conducted the comparative experiments by the real oceanic data. Under the different SNRs, we have verified the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method, also obtained better performance in terms of resolution than compared algorithm. © 2020 IEEE.

With rising uncertainty in the real world, online Reinforcement Learning (RL) has been receiving increasing attention due to its fast learning capability and improving data efficiency. However, online RL often suffers from complex Value Function Approximation (VFA) and catastrophic interference, creating difficulty for the deep neural network to be applied to an online RL algorithm in a fully online setting. Therefore, a simpler and more adaptive approach is introduced to evaluate value function with the kernel-based model. Sparse representations are superior at handling interference, indicating that competitive sparse representations should be learnable, non-prior, non-truncated and explicit when compared with current sparse representation methods. Moreover, in learning sparse representations, attention mechanisms are utilized to represent the degree of sparsification, and a smooth attentive function is introduced into the kernel-based VFA. In this paper, we propose an Online Attentive Kernel-Based Temporal Difference (OAKTD) algorithm using two-timescale optimization and provide convergence analysis of our proposed algorithm. Experimental evaluations showed that OAKTD outperformed several Online Kernel-based Temporal Difference (OKTD) learning algorithms in addition to the Temporal Difference (TD) learning algorithm with Tile Coding on public Mountain Car, Acrobot, CartPole and Puddle World tasks. To improve the accuracy of leukocyte segmentation, this paper presents a novel method based on adaptive histogram thresholding (AHT). The proposed method first employs color component combination and AHT to extract the nucleus of leukocyte and utilizes image color features to remove the complex backgrounds such as red blood cells (RBCs) and substantial dyeing impurities. Then, Canny edge detection is performed to extract the entire leukocyte. Finally, the cytoplasm of the leukocyte is obtained by subtracting the nucleus with the entire leukocyte. Experimental results on an image dataset containing 60 leukocyte images show that the proposed method generates more accurate segmentation results than the counterparts. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

Counting and analysis of leukocyte on peripheral blood smears have great significance to assist doctors’ pathological diagnosis. Thus, accurate and automatic segmentation of leukocyte from blood smear images is a fundamental task. To achieve this task, we proposed an end-to-end peripheral blood leukocyte segmentation method based on deep convolutional neural networks, where the encoder-decoder network is its basic structure. Specifically, the proposed method first utilizes the feature encoder to extract multi-scale leukocyte features. Then, the context-aware feature decoder is introduced to reconstruct the segmentation mask of leukocyte. Finally, each layer generates a prediction map in the decoder module, and all these prediction maps are averaged to be the final prediction map. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we performed qualitative and quantitative comparisons with several existing methods on two publicly available datasets and a private dataset. Experimental results validate that the proposed method is superior for peripheral blood leukocyte image segmentation in terms of accuracy and robustness. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are important imaging and diagnostic biomarkers for cerebrovascular diseases and cognitive dysfunctions. Reliable detection of the location and amount of CMBs in brain tissue is crucial for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of related diseases, where traditional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has been applied but may fail to achieve high enough detection accuracy. To alleviate this issue, we utilize 3D Fully Convolutional Networks (FCN) and 3D AlexNet to establish a cascade coarse-to-fine detection manner. Specifically, CMBs candidates are first screened out using 3D FCN, followed by 3D AlexNet which extracts the spatial features of CMBs and distinguishes the false positive samples from candidate regions. Experimental results show that the proposed method can realize precise detection of CMBs in magnetic resonance images (MRI) by improving detection sensitivity and reducing false positive samples. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Metal implants are one of the culprits for image quality degradation in CT imaging, introducing so-called metal artifacts. With the help of the virtual-monochromatic imaging technique, dual-energy CT has been proven to be effective in metal artifact reduction. However, the virtual monochromatic images with suppressed metal artifacts show reduced CNR compared to polychromatic images. To remove metal artifacts on polychromatic images, we propose a dual-energy NMAR (deNMAR) algorithm in this paper that adds material decomposition to the widely used NMAR framework. The dual energy sinograms are first decomposed into water and bone sinograms, and metal regions are replaced with water on the reconstructed material maps. Prior sinograms are constructed by polyenergetically forward projecting the material maps with corresponding spectra, and they are used to guide metal trace interpolation in the same way as in the NMAR algorithm. We performed experiments on authentic human body phantoms, and the results show that the proposed deNMAR algorithm achieves better performance in tissue restoration compared to other compelling methods. Tissue boundaries become clear around metal implants, and CNR rises to 2.58 from ~1.70 on 80 kV images compared to other dual-energy-based algorithms.

The appearance analysis and counting of peripheral blood leukocytes can assist the diagnosis of blood diseases such as leukemia. Therefore, it is necessary to automatically extract leukocytes from blood smear images. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end peripheral blood leukocyte image segmentation method based on fully convolutional neural network, which can not only encode multi-scale contextual information, but also capture clear boundary information through decoding. Specifically, the proposed method first utilizes the context-aware feature encoder with residual convolutions to extract a set of multi-scale features. Then, a refinement module of parallel dilated convolutions with multiple dilation rates for expanding the receptive field of the feature maps is introduced to aggregate contextual information. Finally, clear prediction results are reconstructed by the context-aware feature decoder and skip connections. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on two publicly available datasets. © 2020 IEEE.

Accurate segmentation of liver tumors is an important guarantee for the success of liver cancer surgery, where convolutional network has been a type of popular method. However, the performance of the traditional convolutional network is limited by the network depth. To improve the accuracy of liver tumor segmentation, we propose a cascaded deep fully convolutional network (DFCN) which uses ResNet as the basis network followed by side output layer in the upsampling stage to fuse multi-scale image features. For better localizing the liver tumors, the segmentation result is further refined by a fully connected conditional random field. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves higher segmentation accuracy than several state-of-the-art methods. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Hand hygiene is a standard six-step hand-washing action proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, there is no good way to supervise medical staff to do hand hygiene, which brings the potential risk of disease spread. Existing action assessment works usually make an overall quality prediction on an entire video. However, the internal structures of hand hygiene action are important in hand hygiene assessment. Therefore, we propose a novel fine-grained learning framework to perform step segmentation and key action scorer in a joint manner for accurate hand hygiene assessment. Existing temporal segmentation methods usually employ multi-stage convolutional network to improve the segmentation robustness, but easily lead to over-segmentation due to the lack of the long-range dependence. To address this issue, we design a multi-stage convolution-transformer network for step segmentation. Based on the observation that each hand-washing step involves several key actions which determine the hand-washing quality, we design a set of key action scorers to evaluate the quality of key actions in each step. In addition, there lacks a unified dataset in hand hygiene assessment. Therefore, under the supervision of medical staff, we contribute a video dataset that contains 300 video sequences with fine-grained annotations. Extensive experiments on the dataset suggest that our method well assesses hand hygiene videos and achieves outstanding performance. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
