Generalized response displacement methods for seismic analysis of underground structures with complex cross section

The response displacement method(RDM)is recommended for the seismic analysis of underground structures in the transverse direction for many codes,including bases for design of structures-seismic actions for designing geotechnical works(ISO 23469)and code for seismic design of urban rail transit structures(GB 50909-2014).However,there are some obvious limitations in the application of *** and the shear stress of the soil could be approximately evaluated for the structures having a simple cross section,such as rectangular and circular *** is necessary to propose simplified seismic analysis methods for structures with complex cross *** paper refers to the idea of RDM and proposes three generalized response displacement methods(GRDM).In GRDM1,a part of the soil surrounding a structure is selected to generate a generalized underground structure with a rectangular cross section,and the same analysis model as RDM is applied to analyze the responses of the *** GRDM2,a hollow soil model without a generalized structure is used to compute the equivalent load caused by the relative displacement of the soil,and the soil-structure interaction model is applied to calculate the responses of the *** GRDM3,a continuous soil model is applied to compute the equivalent load caused by the relative displacement and shear stress of the soil,and the soil-structure interaction model is applied to analyze the responses of the structure,which is the same as the model used in *** time-history analysis method(THAM)is used to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed simplified *** show that the error of GRDM1 is about 20%,while the error is only 5%for GRDM2 and *** the three proposed methods,GRDM3 has obvious advantages regarding calculation efficiency and ***,it is recommended to use GRDM3 for the seismic response analysis of underground structures that have conventional simple or complex cross sections.

Cadmium (Cd) is a typical nitrification inhibitor, which has a strong inhibitory effect on partial nitrification (PN). The discrepancy on Cd tolerance of PN sludge caused by low-intensity ultrasound (LIU) was studied. It suggested that the half inhibitory concentration (IC50) of sludge was increased from 24.51 to 29.07 mg/L by 35 days of ultrasonic treatment, and the Cd tolerance of sludge was enhanced. Further analysis indicated that contents of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) rose substantially because of LIU, which played a catalytic role on increasing adsorption capacity of PN sludge for Cd. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In order to consider the influence of sedimentation and stress history on the settlement calculation and compression modulus, a formula for calculating the compression modulus and settlement of soil was derived based on the unified compression curve of the single logarithm model, and the applicability of the prediction formula was discussed by comparing the existing field monitoring data. Finally, a case study was conducted to explore the evolution of soil compression modulus and settlement under the conditions of sedimentation and stress history. The results show that: (1) For compression modulus, when the additional stress is small, the compression modulus depends on the early consolidation stress. With the increase of additional stress, the influence of the initial consolidation stress becomes less and less, making the compression modulus more and more affected by the additional stress. (2) With the increase of soil depth, the difference of sedimentation on settlement results becomes more obvious. Therefore, when calculating the settlement of deep soil layer, not only the influence of gravity stress, but also the influence of sedimentation on effective weight should be considered. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Seismic Target Drifts for Underground Railway Stations. Cases of Traditional Rigid Connections and Sliding Interior Columns

In this study, the seismic performances of underground structures with either transverse traditional rigid layout or sliding interior columns are numerically evaluated by pushover analyses;both the horizontal and vertical components of the seismic ground motion are taken into account. Thirty-one representative actual subway stations featured with various structural forms, soil types, and burial depths are analyzed in this study;although each of these stations has rigid connections between all their structural members, alternative solutions with sliding interior columns are also designed. The seismic performance of each station (with rigid connections and sliding columns) is evaluated in the framework of the Performance-Based Design by considering four Target Drifts: Normal Operational, Immediate Operational, Reparable Operational and Irreparable. The corresponding drift thresholds are determined for each individual station, then global average values for the two considered cases (traditional rigid layout and sliding columns) are proposed. The rationality of the proposed seismic performance quantification system is verified by comparison with observed damage (Daikai station, traditional rigid solution) and experimental results (shaking table test of reduced scale station model with sliding columns). © 2023, The Authors. Construction such as foundation pit precipitation and excavation can lead to redistribution of stresses in the soil, which can affect the adjacent existing tunnel and even cause cracking of the existing tunnel. Using a foundation pit in Nanchang as a case study, a numerical model was established using PLAXIS 3D software to investigate the effect of pre-submergence of the foundation pit on the adjacent existing tunnel, and the influence of factors such as the burial depth of the existing tunnel and the distance d between the tunnel and the foundation pit on the tunnel deformation was discussed. The results of the study show that as the depth of the tunnel increases, the tunnel deforms in the direction of the pit, with the bending moment, horizontal and vertical displacement of the tunnel being 'large in the middle and small at the ends', and the maximum value of the displacement decreases gradually, while the maximum value of the bending moment. In addition, when the burial depth is less than 1.0H, the influence of the spacing d is the greatest, the larger the spacing d the smaller the displacement value of the tunnel;while when the burial depth is greater than 1.0H, the burial depth becomes the main factor affecting the tunnel deformation. © 2021 IEEE.

Pre-precipitation before excavation of the foundation pit will cause the displacement of the surrounding soil, which will affect the adjacent group piles in turn. Based on the foundation pit engineering of a station in Nanchang Metro Line 4, this paper establishes a three-dimensional fluid-solid coupling model of the influence of pre-dewatering on adjacent group piles with the help of PLAXIS 3D finite element software, studies the settlement pattern of the ground surface outside the pit and the mechanism of force deformation of the adjacent piles under the pre-dewatering condition, and further analyzes the influence of the pile length and pile diameter on the stress and deformation of the pile foundation. The calculation results show that the vertical displacement distribution of the surface outside the pit caused by precipitation is 'spoon-shaped', and the existence of the adjacent piles will hinder the displacement of the surrounding soil. The vertical displacement of the pile foundation gradually decreases with the increase of the pile depth and distance from the pit. When controlled variables are used, the increase in pile length and pile diameter leads to an increase in the ability to resist the surrounding soil displacement and a decrease in vertical displacement. Especially as pile diameter increases, the range of variation in vertical displacement of the pile foundation decreases significantly. The maximum axial force of the pile foundation tends to increase with the pile length or pile diameter increasing, and the position of the neutral point also moves downward due to its influence. © 2021 IEEE.

Subway tunnel of Nanchang may pass through one or several weathered argillaceous siltstone in the construction process. To reveal the influence of weathered argillaceous siltstone on the long-term settlement of subway tunnel, the dynamic triaxial tests of intensely and moderately weathered argillaceous siltstone were carried out. Based on these tests results, the evolution law of cumulative plastic dynamic strain was analyzed and a prediction model of cumulative plastic strain was established. Finally, an actual subway tunnel with weathered argillaceous siltstone was selected for long-term settlement prediction analysis. The prediction data shows that the sedimentation value of tunnel is approximately 20.87 mm under 100 years operation. Research results indicate that the dynamic strain of weathered argillaceous siltstone under cyclic vibration load is mainly affected by dynamic stress and static deviatoric stress. When the static deviatoric stress increased from 0 kPa to 200 kPa, the dynamic strain of intensely and moderately weathered argillaceous siltstone increased by 8.53 times and 5.97 times, respectively. Therefore, the intensely weathered argillaceous siltstone (IWAS) is more susceptible to static deviatoric stress than moderately weathered argillaceous siltstone (MWAS). In addition, increasing the confining pressure will accelerate the expansion of fissures in intensely weathered argillaceous siltstone, while the fissures in moderately weathered argillaceous siltstone will be inhibited, which show diametrically opposite results. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Dynamic sub-structure method for longitudinal seismic response of large-diameter shield tunnel through the complex strata

Based on the deficiencies of the generalized response displacement method and the integral response displacement method for longitudinal seismic analysis of the shield tunnel, the dynamic sub-str1cture analysis method for longitudinal seismic response of a large-diameter shield tunnel crossing the complex soil layer is proposed. The feasibility and superiority of the dynamic sub-structure analysis method are explored by comparing it with the calculation results of the three-dimensional (3D) soil-underground structure interaction model. Then, a finite element refined 3D model of the 2.7 km Suai submarine shield tunnel is established by using the proposed method, and the longitudinal seismic response of the large-diameter shield tunnel crossing complex soil layers is simulated and analyzed. The research results indicate that the proposed dynamic sub-structure method has clear concepts, accurate calculation results and high efficiency to simulate the dynamic soil-tunnel interaction, which can avoid the error effect of the equivalent soil spring used in the generalized response displacement method. At the same time, this method can consider the seismic effect of the complex soil layers which has been avoided by the generalized response displacement method and the integral response displacement method. Also, the calculation results by the proposed method can comprehensively present the typical earthquake damages of shield tunnels crossing the wide river valley or the strait. It proves that it is not appropriate to simplify the longitudinally of the shield tunnel into a straight line, as doing so would neglect the influence of the longitudinal slope of complex river valleys or the straits. Also, the longitudinal seismic response of the shield tunnel is more sensitive to low-frequency seismic waves and the bolts are more susceptible to seismic damage compared to the segment opening. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

This study investigates the construction of a large basement adjacent to two overlapping subway tunnels in a soft-soil area in Hangzhou. A year-long onsite monitoring program is conducted to investigate the effects of excavation and underground-structure construction on the immediately adjacent tunnels. The main monitoring items include the tunnel's horizontal displacement, the horizontal convergent deformation of the tunnel section, and the roadbed settlement. Measurement results show that excavation triggers the displacement of the subway tunnel toward the pit, the elongation of the tunnel tube sheet, and the uplift of the roadbed, among which horizontal displacement occurs the most readily. The construction of the metro structure increases the displacement of the metro tunnel toward the foundation pit and the bulge of the roadbed but minimally affects the convergent deformation of the tunnel cross-section. The tunnels adjacent to the pit area are affected the most by excavation, whereas the overlapping tunnels increase the overall stiffness of the area and constrains the deformation of the tube sheet. The station facilities connect the uplink and downlink of the tunnel, thus promoting interline deformation and diminishing the effect of pit excavation on tunnel deformation. This study provides a useful reference for similar project cases in the Hangzhou area to ensure the safety of adjacent subway tunnels during basement excavation. © 2025
