The proliferation of image manipulation tools has led to an increase in the number of manipulated images being disseminated online, posing risks like the propagation of fake news and telecom fraud. Thus, there is an increasing demand for precise, generic, and robust methods for detecting and locating manipulated images. In this paper, we propose a simple and clean model, named MEAFormer, for image forgery localization that does not heavily rely on pre-training models. MEAFormer comprises three main components: encoder network, neck network, and decoder network. Specifically, the transformer-based encoder network extracts hierarchical feature representations from the input image, providing rich contextual information in each layer. The neck network, incorporating our proposed cross-layer feature aggregation (CFA), aggregates these hierarchical features. To achieve better spatial feature co-occurrence, instead of using noise or edge artifacts, we introduce a multi-scale graph reasoning (MGR) module within the decoder network via bipartite graphs over the encoder and decoder features in a multi-scale fashion. The cross-level enhancement (CLE) further performs adjacent-level feature fusion to amplify the region-of-interests in aggregated manipulation features. Finally, the multi-exit architecture (MEA) guides the model to learn fine-grained features and segment out the manipulated region. Extensive experiments across diverse and challenging datasets conclusively establish MEAFormer’s superiority over existing state-of-the-art methods, excelling in accuracy, generalization, and robustness. © 2023, The Authors. Are Your Apps Accessible? A GCN-based Accessibility Checker for Low Vision Users

Context: Accessibility issues (e.g., small size and narrow interval) in mobile applications (apps) lead to obstacles for billions of low vision users in interacting with Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs). Although GUI accessibility scanning tools exist, most of them perform rule-based check relying on complex GUI hierarchies. This might make them detect invisible redundant information, cannot handle small deviations, omit similar components, and is hard to extend. Objective: In this paper, we propose a novel approach, named ALVIN (Accessibility Checker for Low Vision), which represents the GUI as a graph and adopts the Graph Convolutional Neural Networks (GCN) to label inaccessible components. Method: ALVIN removes invisible views to prevent detecting redundancy and uses annotations from low vision users to handle small deviations. Also, the GCN model could consider the relations between GUI components, connecting similar components and reducing the possibility of omission. ALVIN only requires users to annotate the relevant dataset when detecting new kinds of issues. Results: Our experiments on 48 apps demonstrate the effectiveness of ALVIN, with precision of 83.5%, recall of 78.9%, and F1-score of 81.2%, outperforming baseline methods. In RQ2, the usefulness is verified through 20 issues submitted to open-source apps. The RQ3 also illustrates the GCN model is better than other models. Conclusion: To summarize, our proposed approach can effectively detect accessibility issues in GUIs for low vision users, thereby guiding developers in fixing them efficiently. Multifaceted User Modeling in Recommendation: A Federated Foundation Models Approach

Multifaceted user modeling aims to uncover fine-grained patterns and learn representations from user data, revealing their diverse interests and characteristics, such as profile, preference, and personality. Recent studies on foundation model-based recommendation have emphasized the Transformer architecture's remarkable ability to capture complex, non-linear user-item interaction relationships. This paper aims to advance foundation model-based recommendersystems by introducing enhancements to multifaceted user modeling capabilities. We propose a novel Transformer layer designed specifically for recommendation, using the self-attention mechanism to capture sequential user-item interaction patterns. Specifically, we design a group gating network to identify user groups, enabling hierarchical discovery across different layers, thereby capturing the multifaceted nature of user interests through multiple Transformer layers. Furthermore, to broaden the data scope and further enhance multifaceted user modeling, we extend the framework to a federated setting, enabling the use of private datasets while ensuring privacy. Dual UAV Cluster-Assisted Maritime Physical Layer Secure Communications via Collaborative Beamforming

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be utilized as relay platforms to assist maritime wireless communications. However, complex channels and multipath effects at sea can adversely affect the quality of UAV transmitted signals. Collaborative beamforming (CB) can enhance the signal strength and range to assist the UAV relay for remote maritime communications. However, due to the open nature of UAV channels, security issue requires special consideration. This paper proposes a dual UAV cluster-assisted system via CB to achieve physical layer security in maritime wireless communications. Specifically, one UAV cluster forms a maritime UAV-enabled virtual antenna array (MUVAA) relay to forward data signals to the remote legitimate vessel, and the other UAV cluster forms an MUVAA jammer to send jamming signals to the remote eavesdropper. In this system, we formulate a secure and energy-efficient maritime communication multi-objective optimization problem (SEMCMOP) to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the legitimate vessel, minimize the SINR of the eavesdropping vessel and minimize the total flight energy consumption of UAVs. Since the SEMCMOP is an NP-hard and large-scale optimization problem, we propose an improved swarm intelligence optimization algorithm with chaotic solution initialization and hybrid solution update strategies to solve the problem. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other comparison algorithms, and it can achieve more efficient signal transmission by using the CB-based method. DNA methylation is a critical epigenetic modification that plays a central role in gene regulation, cellular differentiation, and the development of various diseases, including cancers. Aberrant methylation patterns have emerged as both biomarkers and mechanistic drivers in pathogenesis, underscoring the urgent need for precise and efficient predictive tools. Although some deep learning techniques have advanced methylation prediction, most existing models are trained independently on single-species datasets. This species-specific approach limits efficiency because each model can only handle one dataset at a time, often at the expense of predictive performance. Additionally, the state-of-the-art deep learning models tend to have enormous parameter counts and computational overhead, making them impractical for integration into local offline software applications. To overcome these challenges, we propose AutoFE-Pointer, a lightweight and novel framework that harnesses an improved softened pointer network to dynamically extract and weight features from diverse DNA sequences. AutoFE-Pointer is designed to simultaneously process 17 different benchmark datasets spanning multiple species, achieving superior performance compared to models that are trained individually on single-species data. In doing so, it not only offers state-of-the-art predictive accuracy and robust cross-species generalization but also significantly reduces computational demands, facilitating its deployment in local offline environments. This breakthrough represents a significant advancement in the field of epigenetic modeling and computational biology. © 2025

Federated Adaptation for Foundation Model-based Recommendations

With the recent success of large language models, particularly foundation models with generalization abilities, applying foundation models for recommendations becomes a new paradigm to improve existing recommendation systems. It becomes a new open challenge to enable the foundation model to capture user preference changes in a timely manner with reasonable communication and computation costs while preserving privacy. This paper proposes a novel federated adaptation mechanism to enhance the foundation model-based recommendation system in a privacy-preserving manner. Specifically, each client will learn a lightweight personalized adapter using its private data. The adapter then collaborates with pre-trained foundation models to provide recommendation service efficiently with fine-grained manners. Importantly, users’ private behavioral data remains secure as it is not shared with the server. This data localization-based privacy preservation is embodied via the federated learning framework. The model can ensure that shared knowledge is incorporated into all adapters while simultaneously preserving each user’s personal preferences. As the mobile Internet grows rapidly, location-based services (LBSs) are widely applied in the tourism and transportation fields. To fully mine the data collected, location service providers (LSPs) intend to offer various query services to users, which include eclipse query. The eclipse query can generalize nearest neighbor queries and skyline queries and allow users to set more rough and customizable preference ranges. In addition, with the boom of cloud computing, more and more LSPs hope to leverage the cloud to offer better query services. Given that the data could potentially contain confidential information, the data are required to be encrypted prior to outsourcing them. Therefore, eclipse queries need to be executed on the ciphertext. Although several schemes for eclipse queries have been proposed in existing works, they have little focus on privacy issues. To address this issue, we propose an efficient and privacy-preserving scheme for eclipse queries (EPEQ) in this paper. First, we develop a MinValue tree to construct an index for the dataset. Then, by utilizing the MinValue tree and a symmetric homomorphic encryption technique, we design a secure minimum value comparison protocol to obtain a skyline data and a secure undominated data acquisition protocol to obtain the data not skyline dominated by the skyline data. After that, we present our scheme. We analyze the security of the EPEQ scheme and perform experimental evaluations, demonstrating the security and efficiency of our EPEQ scheme.

The present study explores the intricacies of causal relationship extraction, a vital component in the pursuit of causality knowledge. Causality is frequently intertwined with temporal elements, as the progression from cause to effect is not instantaneous but rather ensconced in a temporal dimension. Thus, the extraction of temporal causality holds paramount significance in the field. In light of this, we propose a method for extracting causality from the text that integrates both temporal and causal relations, with a particular focus on the time aspect. To this end, we first compile a dataset that encompasses temporal relationships. Subsequently, we present a novel model, TC-GAT, which employs a graph attention mechanism to assign weights to the temporal relationships and leverages a causal knowledge graph to determine the adjacency matrix. Additionally, we implement an equilibrium mechanism to regulate the interplay between temporal and causal relations. Our experiments demonstrate that our proposed method significantly surpasses baseline models in the task of causality extraction.

An Adversarial Complementary Erasing Network for Salient Object Detection in Optical Remote Sensing Images

Salient object detection in optical remote sensing images (RSI-SOD) aims to locate and extract visually discriminative objects or regions, which has attracted more and more attention from the community. The key challenge of RSI-SOD lies in the characteristics of optical RSIs, such as scale diversification of salient objects, irregular edges, and cluttered backgrounds. In this paper, we strive to embrace challenges towards effective and efficient RSI-SOD. To this end, we develop a framework, termed Adversarial Complementary Erasing Network (ACENet), which comprehensively mines discriminative features of different layers from foreground, background, local and global perspectives to perform robust and accurate saliency detection. Specifically, ACENet is a typical encoder-decoder structure that embeds Adversarial Erasing Synthesis Module (AESM) in multi-scale encoding features to fully explore more useful and complete representations. In AESM, we introduce Adversarial Discriminant Information Mining (ADIM) component to facilitate adaptive adjustment between salient features and background, further enabling more representative and strong integrity feature generation. Experimental results on three datasets prove that our ACENet significantly outperforms cutting-edge SOD models both qualitatively and quantitatively with a quick reasoning speed of 76 FPS. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is progressive and gets worse with time. Early detection is an effective treatment for the disease, which can timely implement effective interventions. The multi-modal medical image contains more comprehensive and abundant information about the disease, which can reflect the different aspects of AD and reduce the potential bias in single-modal diagnosis. However, an effective and reliable solution is still lacking, which can integrate multimodal neuroimaging effectively for the precision diagnosis and treatment of AD. In this work, we proposed a feature representation and fusion model of MRI and PET scans based on a multiscale convolution network and cross-attention for AD early diagnosis, named camAD. Compared with the existing models, camAD performs better with fewer pre-processing steps. Using the Alzheimer’s disease neuroimaging initiative (ADNI) datasets, we demonstrated that integrating multi-modality data outperforms single-modality models in accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, AUC, and F1 scores. Our models exhibited significantly good accuracy and generality in four classification tasks, which provided a promising way to understand the underlying mechanisms of the disorder's progression.
